Abstract: This research has proposed a modified uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) for radiation to investigate the radiation pattern on the coated metallic curved surface. The modified UTD, which accounts for the existence of the impedance surface (coating), is applied to the development of a compact UHF RFID passive tag antenna with a two-pronged fork slot to be mounted on the coated metallic cylindrical drum. In the calculation, the UHF RFID tag was initially represented by electric tangential (E<inf>z</inf>-source) and equivalent magnetic tangential to the surface (M<inf>z</inf>-source). The results indicated that the M<inf>z</inf>-source could achieve a greater communication area, and thus the design of the tag antenna is of equivalent magnetic source. Simulations were then carried out to determine the optimal antenna parameters, and an antenna prototype was fabricated and tested. The simulation and measured results are in agreement. The research findings validate the effectiveness of the modified UTD-based UHF RFID tag for application on the coated metallic curved surface.

The tag antenna has the same size with a credit card. The overall dimension of the tag antenna with EBG is 147 mm × 73.5 mm × 8.3 mm. The purpose of this antenna design is to implement with the RFID for the highway tracking and tolls systems. The tag antenna and EBG are designed on FR-4 substrate with thickness of 0.3 mm and 3 mm, respectively. To achieve the dual band operation, the designed tag antenna with EBG structure is based on the loop (spiral coil), the meander-line structure with double T-matching and mushroom-like EBG structure for HF-, UHF-RFID and EBG, respectively.

This paper presents the UHF-RFID tag antenna applied on a human body (wrist). The proposed tag antenna was fabricated on a thin FR4 substrate (ε<inf>r</inf>= 4.3) with the thickness of 0.25 mm. The T-matching and double-ended rectangular loop techniques are presented to improve an antenna impedance to achieve a matching condition with the NXP G2XL IC chip with the impedance of 21.29 − j191.7 Ω, considering at the center frequency of the standard in Thailand with 922.5 MHz. The proposed tag antenna can apply for the standard of UHF-RFID in Thailand (920–925 MHz) and FCC (902–928 MHz). The radiation patterns of the tag antenna with and without wrist models are unidirectional and omnidirectional, respectively.

Ultra-high-frequency radio frequency identification is widely used in logistics and inventory management due to its compact size, distant readability, and speedy response. Nevertheless, current readability distance of the existing ultra-high-frequency radio frequency identification does not satisfy the requirements of certain applications, giving rise to research works to improve upon the present technology. Therefore, the focus of this article is to develop a compact wideband passive tag antenna operable in the entire ultra-high-frequency radio frequency identification band of 860-960 MHz. The impedance bandwidth, i.e., |S<inf>11</inf>| (dB), of the proposed tag antenna was set at less than -10 dB. The modified T-match and meander-line techniques were utilized to enhance the impedance of the tag antenna so that it is not only compatible with an integrated circuit chip (NXP G2XL; NXP Semiconductors, 2012) but also operable in the ultra-high-frequency radio frequency identification international standard bandwidth. The proposed tag antenna was fabricated on an FR-4 substrate with a thickness of 0.25 mm and cross-section dimension of 11 mm (W) × 88 mm (L). The radiation pattern of the antenna is omnidirectional with linear polarization and maximum gain of 2.05 dBi.

This paper presents the UHF RFID tag antenna designed for the operating frequency band of 920–925 MHz corresponding to the standard of UHF RFID in Thailand. The tag antenna was fabricated by using a thin FR4 substrate (ε<inf>r</inf> = 4.3) with the thickness of 0.25 mm. The pattern of the tag antenna is omnidirectional. The “KMITL” text bent dipole is the technique to reduce the physical size of the tag antenna. The I-loop structure is used to improve the impedances of the tag antenna to achieve the conjugate matching with the IC chip. The impedance of the IC chip at the frequency of 922.5 MHz is 21.29 − j191.7 Ω. The maximum read range is 4.5 m.

This paper proposes the tag antenna designed to operate along the frequency band of 902-928 MHz corresponding to UHF RFID in Thailand and FCC standards. The tag antenna was fabricated from the thin FR4 substrate with the dielectric constant of 4.3 and the thickness of 1.5 mm. The radiation pattern of the tag antenna is omni-directional beam. The tag antenna is designed by using H-slot matching technique for impedance matching between the antenna and IC chip with the impedance of 16.01-j150.02 at the frequency of 915 MHz that is the center frequency of FCC standard. The structure of the tag antenna is durable and suitable for applying with pallet applications.

The electromagnetic (EM) wave radiation of the C-slot radio frequency identification (RFID) tag located on the impedance surface in this paper is analyzed using the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) solution. The UTD radiation solution for the impedance curved surface is employed to predict the EM wave radiation of the RFID tag mounted on the impedance curved product surface. The UTD radiation solution provides the physical insight of the EM field at the observation point and requires less computational time than the other numerical methods. The results show that the UTD radiation solution can accurately predict the radiation pattern of the proposed C-slot RFID tag mounted on the product. The proposed tag antenna can efficiently be applied to the curved surface object, such as the curved metallic product coated with dielectric (layers of paints). © 2013 IEEE.
