Rainfall is one of the most important meteorological variables in the daily lives of urban populations. The city of Maceió, the capital of Alagoas, located in the eastern part of the Northeast of Brazil (ENEB), has 50 neighborhoods and a population of approximately one million people, with few studies on the subject. The objectives were: (i) to validate the CHIRPS product; (ii) to identify the preferential rainfall periods in Maceió via GIS; (iii) to map areas for the installation of in situ stations in the city with the aim of supporting the prevention of hydrometeorological disasters; and (iv) creation of a theoretical-conceptual rainfall model. The statistical indicators (R², ρ, BIAS, MAPE and RMSE) were used to validate the gridded precipitation product CHIRPS from 11 CEMADEN rain gauge stations. Monthly rain occurrence maps via Spline tension were developed by QGIS (Quantum GIS) software. The HAND model was applied at neighborhood level for the assessment of urban floods. Waterborne disease data were obtained from SINAN, Natural Disaster data via S2iD from the period 2000 to 2023, and the NDVI and EVI indices in the years 2015 and 2022 were evaluated in the study. All stations were monotonically positive (ρ > 0.65) and significant (p-value < 0.001), indicating that CHIRPS is able to capture rainfall variability despite the influences of the coast, Lagoa Mundaú, and topography. Most stations showed underestimation (negative BIAS) and lower errors (MAE and RMSE). Spatially, the increase in rainfall on the coastal plateau is due to the interaction of the wind regime with the relief, driven by the circulation of breezes and the influence of trade winds. The preferential rainfall period occurs between 04:00 am and 07:00 am. The HAND model identified very high and high susceptibility, mainly on the coast, in areas adjacent to Lagoa Mundaú, and in neighborhoods crossed by rivers and urban canals, and low susceptibility in densely populated neighborhoods. Waterborne diseases together with transformations via NDVI and EVI indicated that rainfall amplifies risk scenarios for the most vulnerable and densely populated populations. In light of this, it is perceived that the rainfall patterns in Maceió are due to the interaction of physiographic and/or anthropogenic factors and meteorological systems – theoretical-conceptual model – which requires improvements in infrastructure and an active monitoring system.

Satellite-based anomaly detection can provide substantial precursory information linked to impending earthquakes (EQ). The strong EQs are followed by some complex precursory signals both before and after the main shock. For this, different methods and datasets are employed to monitor these disastrous events. In our study, we used the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite to evaluate land surface temperature (LST), the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to observe total electron content (TEC) variations, Swarm satellites to monitor spatial variations in electron density, and Cosmic satellites were used to measure variations in the vertical profile of electron density to look for the complex precursors of Noto Peninsula Japan EQ of 7.5 Mw (occurred on 1st January 2024). Our objective was to observe both the pre- and post-EQ induced anomalies within 25 days and 10 days of the main shock by integrating the statistical, nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX) and continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) methods. We found synchronized and co-located pre-seismic anomalies on December 25 in LST, TEC and electron density. Which was further confirmed using NARX and CWT as well. Additionally, we found some potential post-seismic anomalies. There was an anomalous enhancement in daytime LST, TEC, and electron density on January 2nd with the exception of nighttime LST which showed abrupt increments on the night of the main shock (i.e., January 1st). These findings point towards the strong EQ-induced energy into the atmosphere and ionosphere for more prominent proof of lithosphere-atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC).

The Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has emerged as a valuable tool for terrestrial remote sensing applications, particularly in the context of land Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) detection. The high-resolution capability of GNSS-R complements traditional satellite-based active and passive missions but the product reliability and robustness evaluations are still absent due to an efficient retrieval algorithms. In this study, we addressed this lack of reliability and robustness by comprehensively assessing the SSM retrievals from CYclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) data with the satellite-based microwave radiometry products Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA2) over Punjab in various seasons. ERA5 model-based products for the same period in 2022–2023. Our study reveals a distinct seasonal average SSM variation during autumn (0.20 cm3/cm3), followed by winter values of 0.19 cm3/cm3. Subsequently, the minimum SSM values are observed during summer (0.11 cm3/cm3) and an increase in spring to 0.13 cm3/cm3. Moreover, a strong positive linear relationship (0.74) is evident between SMAP and ERRA 5 in contrast to a low correlation (0.03) between MERRA2 and both the SMAP and ERRA 5. Additionally, SMAP demonstrates moderate and weak correlation of 0.53 and 0.03 with CYGNSS and MERRA2, respectively. The CYGNSS exhibits moderate correlations (0.46) with ERRA 5 and SMAP and a weaker association (0.14) with MERRA2. Our analysis concluded that MERRA2 (Bias = 0.20 cm³/cm³, ubRMSD = 0.25 cm³/cm³, RMSE = 0.12 cm³/cm³, SD = 0.13 cm³/cm³, MAE = 0.04 cm³/cm, R = 0.03) SSM product performs poorly as compared to SMAP (Bias = 0.03 cm³/cm³, ubRMSD = 0.03 cm³/cm³, RMSE = 0.04 cm³/cm³, SD = 0.05 cm³/cm³, MAE = 0.03 cm³/cm³, R = 0.74) and CYGNSS (Bias = -0.01 cm³/cm³, ubRMSD = 0.09 cm³/cm³, RMSE = 0.07 cm³/cm³, SD = 0.06 cm³/cm³, MAE = 0.05 cm³/cm³, R = 0.46) products. This study provides accurate future predictions of SSM with delineating the limitations of GNSS-R in comparison to remote sensing and model values. The findings from this study have also significant implications for the advancement of GNSS-R applications in agriculture and crop management.

Remote sensing has became a powerful tool for identifying lithosphere and atmosphere anomalies associated with the impending Earthquakes (EQs) in the vicinity of seismic breeding zone. In this paper, Land Surface Temperature (LST) of both the daytime and nighttime from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) along with Air Temperature (AT), Relative Humidity (RH), Air Pressure (AP) and Outgoing Longwave Radiations (OLR) are studied for the 2020 Idaho (USA) EQ of Mw 6.5. We found the EQ induced surface and atmospheric parameters anomalies just one day prior to EQ main shock using statistical analysis. Moreover, we observed a sharp increment in LST and AT followed by the drop in both AP and RH, which are responsible for cooling the hot gases emitted from epicenter during preparation period. Also, we observed a large increase in OLR on the same day confirming these anomalous variations to be related with the main shock. Furthermore, these abrupt variations are also confirmed using neural networks (nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and continuous wavelet transformation (CWT). These multi-parameter and multi-technique analyses can contribute to assist in the main shock forecasting in future with an enhanced cluster of satellite observations.

The identification of atmospheric and ionospheric variations through multiple remote sensing and global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) has contributed substantially to the development of the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling (LAIC) phenomenon over earthquake (EQ) epicenters. This study presents an approach for investigating the Petrolia EQ (Mw 6.2; dated 20 December 2021) and the Monte Cristo Range EQ (Mw 6.5; dated 15 May 2020) through several parameters to observe the precursory signals of various natures. These parameters include Land Surface Temperature (LST), Air Temperature (AT), Relative Humidity (RH), Air Pressure (AP), Outgoing Longwave Radiations (OLRs), and vertical Total Electron Content (TEC), and these are used to contribute to the development of LAIC in the temporal window of 30 days before and 15 days after the main shock. We observed a sharp increase in the LST in both the daytime and nighttime of the Petrolia EQ, but only an enhancement in the daytime LST for the Monte Cristo Range EQ within 3–7 days before the main shock. Similarly, a negative peak was observed in RH along with an increment in the OLR 5–7 days prior to both impending EQs. Furthermore, the Monte Cristo Range EQ also exhibited synchronized ionospheric variation with other atmospheric parameters, but no such co-located and synchronized anomalies were observed for the Petrolia EQ. We also applied machine learning (ML) methods to confirm these abrupt variations as anomalies to further aid certain efforts in the development of the LAIC in order to forecast EQs in the future. The ML methods also make prominent the variation in the different data.

We analyze vertical total electron content (vTEC) variations from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) at different latitudes in different continents of the world during the geomagnetic storms of June 2015, August 2018, and November 2021. The resulting ionospheric perturbations at the low and mid-latitudes are investigated in terms of the prompt penetration electric field (PPEF), the equatorial electrojet (EEJ), and the magnetic H component from INTERMAGNET stations near the equator. East and Southeast Asia, Russia, and Oceania exhibited positive vTEC disturbances, while South American stations showed negative vTEC disturbances during all the storms. We also analyzed the vTEC from the Swarm satellites and found similar results to the retrieved vTEC data during the June 2015 and August 2018 storms. Moreover, we observed that ionospheric plasma tended to increase rapidly during the local afternoon in the main phase of the storms and has the opposite behavior at nighttime. The equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest expansion to higher latitudes is driven by PPEF during daytime at the main and recovery phases of the storms. The magnetic H component exhibits longitudinal behavior along with the EEJ enhancement near the magnetic equator.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)- and Remote Sensing (RS)-based Earth observations have a significant approach on the monitoring of natural disasters. Since the evolution and appearance of earthquake precursors exhibit complex behavior, the need for different methods on multiple satellite data for earthquake precursors is vital for prior and after the impending main shock. This study provided a new approach of deep machine learning (ML)-based detection of ionosphere and atmosphere precursors. In this study, we investigate multi-parameter precursors of different physical nature defining the states of ionosphere and atmosphere associated with the event in Japan on 13 February 2021 (M<inf>w</inf> 7.1). We analyzed possible precursors from surface to ionosphere, including Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Air Temperature (AT), Relative Humidity (RH), Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), and Total Electron Content (TEC). Furthermore, the aim is to find a possible pre-and post-seismic anomaly by implementing standard deviation (STDEV), wavelet transformation, the Nonlinear Autoregressive Network with Exogenous Inputs (NARX) model, and the Long Short-Term Memory Inputs (LSTM) network. Interestingly, every method shows anomalous variations in both atmospheric and ionospheric precursors before and after the earthquake. Moreover, the geomagnetic irregularities are also observed seven days after the main shock during active storm days (Kp > 3.7; Dst < −30 nT). This study demonstrates the significance of ML techniques for detecting earthquake anomalies to support the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) mechanism for future studies.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based ionospheric anomalies are nowadays used to identify a possible earthquake (EQ) precursor and hence a new research topic in seismic studies. The current study also aims to provide an investigation of ionospheric anomalies associated to EQs. In order to study possible pre-and post-seismic perturbations during the preparation phase of large-magnitude EQs, statistical and machine learning algorithms are applied to Total Electron Content (TEC) from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Ionosphere Maps (GIMs). We observed TEC perturbation from the Sukkur (27.8° N, 68.9° E) GNSS station near the epicenter of Mw 5.4 Mirpur EQ within 5–10 days before the main shock day by implementing machine learning and statistical analysis. However, no TEC anomaly occurred in GIM-TEC over the Mirpur EQ epicenter. Furthermore, machine learning and statistical techniques are also implemented on GIM TEC data before and after the M<inf>w</inf> 7.7 Awaran, where TEC anomalies can be clearly seen within 5–10 days before the seismic day and the subsequent rise in TEC during the 2 days after the main shock. These variations are also evident in GIM maps over the Awaran EQ epicenter. The findings point towards a large emission of EQ energy before and after the main shock during quiet storm days, which aid in the development of lithosphere ionosphere coupling. However, the entire analysis can be expanded to more satellite and ground-based measurements in Pakistan and other countries to reveal the pattern of air ionization from the epicenter through the atmosphere to the ionosphere.
