The design system consists of a nonlinear microring resonator system incorporating an add/drop filter. The input is bright soliton pluse, whereas the suitable simulation parameters are input power, pulse width, ring radii are 5-10μm and the material refractive indices (κ) are 0.10-0.97. The potential applications for new technique for THz communication system is 0.19 THz by laser sources from microring and nanoring resonator device. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We have proposed a data acquisition system with high speed USB interface using FPGA chip as the main processing unit. Since the FPGA has a number of modules on chip, which can operate independently, it can be utilized for the data acquisition system with multi-channels for the connection to four ADC signals with four different protocols of Parallel, SPI, I2C and one-wire protocol. The system is controlled by the software written in the visual C++. It allows the user to be able to interface to a PC for data restoration and monitoring. We found that this system can perform data acquisition with high rate data transfer.

This paper proposes a design of byte code interpreter for 8051 microcontroller. We developed a program based on Java language "write once, run everywhere". It can be employed to operate with another system since the program interfaces directly to the interpreter, instead of the real system. There are two instruction sets provided in the program. The first is condition commands such as IF and ELSE. The second is the commands for peripheral interfacing such as I2C, RS232 interface, for parallel port, timer and LCD interface. Interpreter is developed with C language, due to its simple structure. It is easy to develop and to modify the code. From the results, condition commands and no condition commands can be execute correctly.

Implementation of multi-protocol, data acquisition with high speed USB interface, using FPGA

This paper describes the implementation of the FPGA as a data acquisition system with high-speed USB interface. This can simplify the data interfacing to the PC by installing most data transfer protocols into one system. The FPGA has the advantage that it allows individual modules on a chip to work independently from each other. Therefore, we can utilize the FPGA as a performance solution for a system which is multi-channeled, with connections to four ADC signals, with the four different protocols of: Parallel, SPI, I2C and One-Wire. In addition, the visual C++ programming for the user interface and data storage application, on a PC, helps this design to respond better to high rates of data acquisition.

Mobile path loss characteristics for low base station antenna height in different forest densities
    (2006-11-02)

This paper presents studies of propagation in a suburban forest based on a measurement campaign at a frequency of 1.8 GHz. We investigated how tree density affected path loss-distance and the fast fading characteristic depends on base tree size and base station antenna height in a range of 3, 4, and 5 m above ground while the receiving antenna height was fixed at 1.8 m above ground. The path loss exponent is found that to average 3.8, 3.7 and 2.2 for the measurement areas of high, medium, and low densities respectively. The high density area with low tree heights provides maximum path loss exponents. Path loss in the same density area depends on the number of trees in the direct path between the transmitter and the receiver. The measurement of signal variation shows that a multi-path contribution becomes more significant as the base station antenna is raised. © 2006 IEEE.

A wavelength sensor based on the optical directional coupler is proposed in the paper. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to calculate of the light intensity propagating thorough the structure, and to find the appropriate dimensions of the structure. A particular dimension of the device has shown the coupling efficiency varying linearly with wavelengths. Thus, the structure could be employed as the wavelength sensor for the wavelength in a range between 1.2μm and 1.6μm. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper proposes a wavelength sensor based on the optical directional coupler. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is used to calculate of the light intensity propagating thorough the structure, and to find the appropriate dimensions of the structure. The structure with the size of 0.4μm×0. 4μm, and particular lengths would provide the coupling efficiency varying linearly with wavelengths. Thus, the structure could be employed as the wavelength sensor for the wavelength in a range between 1.2μm and 1.6μm. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper determines the possibly maximum rate for the optical signal transmitting thorough the racetrack resonator devices. The method of finite-difference time-domain was employed to determine how an optical impulse getting through the device. We observe that the signal requires a certain number of round-trips to couple the signal to the throughput, and causes the delay of the pulse outputting from the device. This indicates that the possible pulse width is in a range of picoseconds, which corresponding to the maximum transmission rate of over a hundred gigabits per second. © 2005 IEEE.

The prediction of the maximum FSR and minimum HPBW for the silicon based ring and racetrack microresonators

This paper determines the maximum free spectral range (FSR) and the minimum half power bandwidth (HPBW) of the ring and racetrack resonators based on silicon substrate using FDTD. At the optimum cross-section that provides the compromised efficiency, the relationships between HPB W against the coupling efficiency and FSR, against the racetrack round trip have been obtained. The relationships would be utilized to determine the possibly maximum FSR of 60nm and the minimum HPBW of 5nm, or highest quality factor for the ring microresonator with 1μm radius. © 2005 IEEE.

2 to 16 GHz Microwave line-of-sight path loss prediction on Urban streets by fuzzy logic models
    (2005-01-01)
    Phaiboon, S.

This paper proposes a method to model the path loss characteristics on urban streets in microwave band. We applied the concept of fuzzy logic to predict an unknown path loss from a set of known path loss. The input fuzzy sets were classified into five sets, namely distance between transmitter and receiver, frequency, time of day, transmitting antenna height and receiving antenna height. These inputs are then inferenced into output path loss via linguistic rules which were trained by measurement. To check the proposed model, we compared the fuzzy prediction with another measurement. The results shown that the fuzzy logic models provided a better prediction.
