This paper proposes a successful technique for designing a PIDA (proportional-integral-derivative-acceleration) controller in both continuous-time and discrete-time frameworks, which provides better transient response specifications in comparison with PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller for third-order plant. The proposed design technique consists of three major steps. First, the PIDA controller is designed by using Kitti's method based on root locus technique in the control loop. Second, the maximum percentage overshoot can be decreased to satisfy specification by applying the forward controller. Based on these two steps, all desired specifications can be achieved without trial and error method for tuning controller parameters. Lastly, the Posicast controller is simply designed because the controlled system can be approximated as a standard second-order system. The performances of the designed PIDA controller are confirmed through MATLAB simulation results.

This paper focuses on establishing the closed-form formulas to design a proportional-integral-derivative-acceleration-jerk (PIDAJ) controller for fourth-order pla- nts. After plant modeling, the analog PIDAJ controller in continuous-time domain can be designed by utilizing the proposed formulas in a vector-matrix form. Based on bilinear transform, the digital PIDAJ controller in discrete-time domain can then be achieved. The use of the proposed formulas to determine the PIDAJ controller's parameters for controlling the air-fuel ratio of an engine is described as an application example to con- _rm their feasibility. MATLAB simulation results con_rm the consistency between step responses of the example system controlled by the designed controllers in continuous-time domain and discrete-time domain.

This paper proposed a controller design technique for controlling the movement of the head in the Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) system to any track accurately. The simulation results by modeling the HDDs as a two-mass system with a spring flexure controlled by the optimal H <inf>2</inf> with the derivative state constrained revealed that only these constraining weights are not enough to eliminate the steady state errors. To accomplish this task, the type of the system to be controlled was modified by adding an integrator; then the derivative state constrained optimal H <inf>2</inf> integral servo controller is applied. The HDD head position to any tracks with no offset and the vibrations are also to be suppressed as well. ICIC International © 2012.

This paper proposes a technique of camera calibration to calibrate a camera. It is easy for the proposed technique to extract the camera parameters with only one image using an iteration method. In this paper, radial and tangential lens distortion is modeled. The proposed technique divides original parameters into block of parameters. Each block of parameters is computed by minimizing a nonlinear error function after the intermediate parameters are linearly computed on each iteration. The formal distorted images and the distorted images with shifted principal point have been used to test the proposed technique and the conventional method. As the result, we have obtained good results. © 2011 ICROS.

This paper presents the design of PI controller using Decoupling and CRA technique for quadruple-tanks process. In case of, TITO interacting system such as quadruple-tanks process, the controller designs have been performed ambitiously because interferences between inputs and outputs. With the proposed method, The Decoupling controllers have been used for decreasing the cross coupling between inputs and outputs and transforming TITO plant transfer function into SISO form so that SISO controller for each SISO model can be designed easily and efficiently. Furthermore, Using CRA technique has made the output response achieve the required performance specification. Also, in non-minimum-phase, PI controller with inverted Decoupling can stabilize the system and minimize several undesirable influences from an interaction in TITO process. The results from control system design can be illustrated by the experiments. © 2011 ICROS.

This paper presents the approach to design PID controller for a modified quadruple-tank process using inverted decoupling technique. In case of non-minimum phase, TITO system, such as modified quadruple-tank process which can't be controlled by PID controller with standard decoupling technique because the system can't be stabled by saturating manipulate signal. With the proposed method, The inverted decoupling controllers, decreasing the cross coupling between inputs and outputs, transform TITO plant transfer function model into SISO form so that SISO controller for each SISO model can be designed by Root Locus Technique easily and efficiently. PID controller with inverted decoupling can stabilize an unstable non-minimum-phase system and minimize several undesirable influences from an interaction in TITO process. To realize battery-free operation employing energy harvesting, a step-down switched-capacitor-based converter has been used as a vibration-to-electricity converter. In this paper, to improve power efficiency, an AC-DC converter realizing 1/N× (N = 2; 3,...) step-down is designed by using switched-capacitor techniques. Although conventional converters offer a DC output by regulating the stored energy in a big capacitor, the proposed converter generates a DC output by realizing AC-DC conversion. Thus, the proposed converter can improve power efficiency. To clarify effectiveness of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis is performed concerning power efficiency and equivalent circuit. When the AC input is a rectangular-wave voltage, the theoretical results obtained by the theoretical analysis are consistent with SPICE simulated results. Furthermore, SPICE simulation results show that the proposed converter can improve power efficiency about 32 % from the conventional converter when R<inf>L</inf> = 100Ω. Next, the validity of the circuit design is confirmed by experiments. The experiments show that the proposed converter can offer stepped-down DC voltage from sinusoidal voltage. © 2011.

Aimed at mobile back-lighting applications, a switched-capacitor-based serial DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. By using battery energy and solar energy, the proposed converter generates the stepped-up voltage to drive white LEDs. Unlike conventional multiple-input parallel converters, the output voltage of the proposed converter is generated by adding the output voltage of the SC-based circuit to the voltage of solar-cells. For this reason, the proposed converter can realize not only small hardware-cost but also wide input-range. Concretely, in comparison with the conventional parallel converter using 1.5 × step-up SC converters, the proposed converter can achieve 20% reduction of hardware cost and 16% extension of input range. The characteristics of the proposed converter are clarified by theoretical analyses. Furthermore, SPICE simulations and experiments show the validity of circuit design, where theoretical results correspond well with simulation results. For this reason, derived theoretical formulas can provide basic information to design serial SC DC-DC converters. The proposed converter will be useful as a LED driver circuit for display back-lighting. © 2011 ICIC International.

As a building block of mobile equipments, single-input switched-capacitor (SC) power converters have been used. However, the single-input converter is difficult to improve battery runtime by adjusting a voltage conversion ratio, because the ratio of the voltage conversion is predetermined by circuit structure. To solve this problem, a dual-input parallel-connected converter designed by the SC technique is proposed in this paper. Although the conventional single-input converter uses a lithium battery as an input energy source, the proposed dual-input converter uses not only a lithium battery but also solar cells. For the conventional SC converters, the energy conversion of clean energy is difficult, because the voltage of clean energy sources such as solar cells is sensitive to weather condition. To adopt the change in the voltage of clean energy input, the proposed converter provides the multi-state step-up conversion. By converting clean energy, the proposed converter realizes long battery runtime. Moreover, to design the multiple-input converter, the theoretical analysis to clarify circuit characteristics is required, because detailed analyses concerning multiple-input SC DC-DC converters have not been performed yet. Therefore, concerning circuit characteristics of the proposed dual-input converter, handy theoretical formulas are given in this paper. Through SPICE simulations, theoretical analyses and experiments, the validity of the proposed converter is confirmed. The theoretical results correspond well with SPICE simulation results. Therefore, the proposed analysis technique can be extended to the circuit design of other multiple-input SC DC-DC converters. Furthermore, the experimental results show that the proposed converter can generate the stepped-up voltage in spite of the change in the voltage of solar cells. Therefore, the proposed converter can realize long battery runtime. ICIC International © 2011.
