    This paper presents a multiple tabu search (MTS) algorithm to solve the economic dispatch (ED) problem by taking valve-point effects into consideration. The practical ED problem with valve-point effects is represented as a non-smooth optimization problem with equality and inequality constraints that make the problem of finding the global or near global optimum difficult. The proposed MTS algorithm is the sequential execution of individual tabu search (TS) algorithm simultaneously by only one personal microcomputer. The MTS algorithm introduces additional techniques for improvement of search process, such as initialization, adaptive searches, multiple searches, replacing and restarting process. To show its effectiveness, the MTS is applied to test two studied systems consisting of 13 and 40 power generating units with valve-point effects. The optimized results by MTS are compared with those of conventional approaches, such as simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), TS algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Studied results confirm that the proposed MTS approach is capable of obtaining higher quality solution efficiently and lowest computational time. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    DSPSO-TSA for economic dispatch problem with nonsmooth and noncontinuous cost functions
    (2010-02-01)

    This paper proposes a new approach based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and tabu search algorithm (TSA). This proposed approach is called distributed Sobol PSO and TSA (DSPSO-TSA). In order to improve the convergence characteristic and solution quality of searching process, three mechanisms had been presented. Firstly, the Sobol sequence is applied to generate an inertia factor instead of the existing process. Secondly, a distributed process is used so as to reach the global solution rapidly. The search process is divided to multi-stages and used a short-term memory for recognition the best search history. Finally, to guarantee the global solution, TSA had been activated to adjust the obtained solution of DSPSO algorithm. To show its effectiveness, the proposed DSPSO-TSA is applied to test four case studies of economic dispatch (ED) problem considering nonsmooth and noncontinuous fuel cost functions of generating units. The simulation results obtained from DSPSO-TSA are compared with conventional approaches such as genetic algorithm (GA), TSA, PSO, and others in literatures. The comparison results show that the efficiency of proposed approach can reach higher quality solution and faster computational time than the conventional methods. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Reliability optimization of topology communication network design using an improved ant colony optimization

    ;
    Network design problem is a well-known NP-hard problem which involves the selection of a subset of possible links or a network topology in order to minimize the network cost subjected to the reliability constraint. To overcome the problem, this paper proposes a new efficiency algorithm based on the conventional ant colony optimization (ACO) to solve the communication network design when considering both economics and reliability. The proposed method is called improved ant colony optimizations (IACO) which introduces two addition techniques in order to improve the search process, i.e. neighborhood search and re-initialization process. To show its efficiency, IACO is applied to test with three different topology network systems and its results are compared with those obtained results from the conventional approaches, i.e. genetic algorithm (GA), tabu search algorithm (TSA) and ACO. Simulation results, obtained these test problems with various constraints, shown that the proposed approach is superior to the conventional algorithms both solution quality and computational time. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Optimal fuzzy logic-based PID controller for load-frequency control including superconducting magnetic energy storage units
    (2008-10-01)
    Pothiya, Saravuth
    ;
    This paper proposes a new optimal fuzzy logic-based-proportional-integral-derivative (FLPID) controller for load frequency control (LFC) including superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) units. Conventionally, the membership functions and control rules of fuzzy logic control are obtained by trial and error method or experiences of designers. To overcome this problem, the multiple tabu search (MTS) algorithm is applied to simultaneously tune PID gains, membership functions and control rules of FLPID controller to minimize frequency deviations of the system against load disturbances. The MTS algorithm introduces additional techniques for improvement of search process such as initialization, adaptive search, multiple searches, crossover and restarting process. Simulation results explicitly show that the performance of the optimum FLPID controller is superior to the conventional PID controller and the non-optimum FLPID controller in terms of the overshoot, settling time and robustness against variations of system parameters. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a new optimization technique based on a multiple tabu search algorithm (MTS) to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (ED) problem with generator constraints. In the constrained dynamic ED problem, the load demand and spinning reserve capacity as well as some practical operation constraints of generators, such as ramp rate limits and prohibited operating zone are taken into consideration. The MTS algorithm introduces additional mechanisms such as initialization, adaptive searches, multiple searches, crossover and restarting process. To show its efficiency, the MTS algorithm is applied to solve constrained dynamic ED problems of power systems with 6 and 15 units. The results obtained from the MTS algorithm are compared to those achieved from the conventional approaches, such as simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), tabu search (TS) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The experimental results show that the proposed MTS algorithm approaches is able to obtain higher quality solutions efficiently and with less computational time than the conventional approaches. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The application of Tabu Search Algorithm (TSA) technique to solve Economic Dispatch problem (ED) with non-smooth fuel cost function is reported in this paper. Results from MATLAB on Pentium III-500 MHz system for three case studies are presented. Effectiveness of method was compared with many conventional methods. Result shows that the proposed method can provide accurate solution with rapid convergence time and has the potential to be applied to other power engineering problem.
