Item type:Publication, Impact of soot nanoparticle size and quantity on four-ball steel wear characteristics using EDS, XRD and electron microscopy image analysis(2022-01-01) ;Karin, Preechar ;Chammana, Pattara ;Oungpakornkaew, Pitchaporn ;Rungsritanapaisan, PanyakornAmornprapa, WarawutThe effect of soot contamination on the tribological performance of engine oil was investigated. Carbon black is introduced to simplify diesel engine soot contamination. Besides, the tribological performance issue is verified by a four-ball tribometer. The steel ball worn surfaces were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Optical Microscope (OM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In addition, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the morphology and nanostructure of soot and carbon black. According to the four ball test results, the average wear scar diameter of steel ball tested with engine oil blended with N220, N330, N550 and N660 by 1% by weight is larger than that of pure engine oil by 26%, 38%, 41%, and 39%, respectively. The wear scar diameter tends to increase after blended larger size of carbon black particle. The steel balls tested with formulated engine oil without soot contamination and with soot contamination by 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt% have average wear scar diameters of 621, 567, 784 and 894 nm, respectively. On the other hand, wear scar roughness of steel balls tested with formulated engine oil without soot contamination and with soot contamination by 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt% were 2.28, 0.25, 1.49 and 1.76 μm, respectively. Consequently, quantity of the soot nanoparticle approximately 0.5% by mass in engine oil significantly plays an important role in steel ball wear scar diameter and surface roughness reduction. Moreover, the agglomerated soot which is larger than the oil film thickness might block the lubricant from entering the contact. It leads to the breakdown of the oil film thickness resulting in increasing adhesive wear on the worn surface. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effect of Soot Particle Size on Four Ball Metallic Wear Using Electron Microscopy Image Analysis(2020-06-01) ;Karin, Preechar ;Amornprapa, Warawut ;Watanawongskorn, Park ;Saenkhumvong, EakkawutCharoenphonphanich, ChindaThe impact of soot primary nanoparticles affecting metal wear was investigated. The commercial Carbon Black (CB) with different primary particle sizes were mixed with the engine oil for simulating soot contamination. The physical properties of carbon black including density and hardness were calculated using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) image analysis. The metallic wear test was evaluated by using a Four-ball wear tester. After the tests, the ball surfaces were inspected by utilizing High-Resolution Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. Based on a Four-ball wear test, the 1 % by weight of carbon black contamination shows a bit higher average wear scar diameter (WSD), but the surface roughness is reduced. SEM micrograph of metallic wear scar for the engine oil without soot shows the area of grooves, plastic deformation and subsurface crack. On the other hand, when carbon black is added to the oil, it can be seen that there are many deep grooves along with the sliding direction. The relationship of calculated oil film thickness, primary nanoparticle size distribution, carbon atom density of soot and hardness is clearly explained metallic wear mechanisms. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Impact of Soot and Engine Oil Additive Characteristics on Metallic Wear using Electron Microscopy and Confocal Microscopy(2020-01-01) ;Rungsritanapaisan, Panyakorn ;Karin, Preechar ;Amornprapa, Warawut ;Tanprayoon, DhrittiTongsri, RuangdajSoot particles are produced inside the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engines and will later be exhausted into the thermosphere. Part of these particles will contaminate the engine oil. When this happens, diesel engine abrasion or, in a worst-case scenario, lubricant starvation will occur. This circumstance will eventually cause engine wear. This research uses X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) technique to analyze the additive element in engine oil. For wear test, this research uses tribology Four ball wear tester to substitute point contact wear mechanism. Then the worn surface is analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Confocal Microscope are used to study the effect of additive on soot dispersion in engine oil, which affects the metal wear mechanism. This research use Laser Particle Size Analyzer to investigate performance of soot dispersant additive in each engine oil. The results show that, the wear scar diameters significantly increased when the American Petroleum Institute (API) CD standard engine oil is contaminated with soot. On the other hand, American Petroleum Institute (API) CF-4 standard engine oil which contains higher amount of additive has a lower roughness value, because its soot dispersant additive improves the dispersing of carbon black (CB). When the CB is dispersed, it will serve to polish the ball's surface, resulting in a lower roughness value in the CB contaminated high amount of additive engine oil, than the low amount of additive engine oil that has soot contaminating. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effect of biofuel and soot on metal wear characteristic using electron microscopy and 3D image processing(2017-11-05) ;Karin, Preechar ;Amornprapa, Warawut ;Khamsrisuk, Phiranat ;Budsayahem, Pol akeChammana, PattaraThe soot contamination in used engine oils of diesel engine vehicles was about 1% by weight. The soot and metal wear particle sizes might be in the range of 0-1 µm and 1-25 µm, respectively. The characteristics of soot affecting on metal wear was investigated. Soot particle contamination in diesel engine oil was simulated using carbon black. Micro-nanostructure of soot particles were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and laser diffraction spectroscopy (LDS). The metal wear behavior was studied by means of a Four-Ball tribology test with wear measured. Wear roughness in micro-scale was investigated by high resolution optical microscopy (OM), 3D rendering optical technique and SEM image processing method. It was found that the ball wear scar diameter increased proportionally to the soot primary particle size. The effect of biodiesel contamination were also increasing in wear scar diameter. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
