    Effect of organic fertilizer rates on grain yield and seed qualities of rice

    The effect of organic fertilizer quantity on the yield and seed qualities of Pathumthani 1 rice revealed that the highest grain yield, 3,893 kg/ha, was attained with the application of 2.24 kg N/ha of organic fertilizer, whereas rice without fertilizer exhibited the lowest yield. However, the application of 1.6 kg N/ha of organic fertilizer resulted in the highest seed germination rate, germination index, and pure seed percentage, with values of 98.00%, 32.43, and 99.71%, respectively. Conversely, applying 2.24 kg N/ha of organic fertilizer yielded the lowest seed germination rate, germination index, and pure seed percentage at 87.50%, 28.74, and 98.11%, respectively. Moreover, the 1.6 kg N/ha rate demonstrated the least inert matter and the lowest number of dead seeds. Consequently, the findings suggested that organic fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 2.24 kg N/ha to achieve high grain yields, while it is still maintained seed germination percentage of over 80%.

    Harvesting time influences seed germination and vigour of some coloured rice varieties in Thailand

    The harvesting time were significantly different for all traits of seedling rice including germination percentage, mean germination time (MGT), fresh weights of shoots and roots, dried of shoots and roots. Rice harvested at 20 days after anthesis had the highest germination percentage, and plant stands in term of fresh and dried weights of roots and shoots in all varieties, and they also had the lowest mean germination time. Rice Berry and Tubtim Chumphae had higher germination percentage after storage for six months than Sang Yod variety. When harvested at 20 days after anthesis, the germination percentages of Rice Berry, Tubtim Chumphae and Song Yod were 98.00, 99.00 and 67.50, respectively.

    Chemical composition and bioactive compounds of Riceberry rice produced under organic and conventional practices

    It is often stated that organic rice has a higher content of healthy phytochemicals than ordinary rice, and the facts on this claim obtained experimentally are rare. Riceberry is a new rice variety in Thailand. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of organic practice and conventional practice on the content of chemical composition and bioactive compounds in Riceberry rice. The results showed that agricultural practices were not significantly different for grain yield in the first year, but they were different in the second year. Rice produced by organic practice had a higher content of iron, gamma-aminobutyric acid, total phenolic and anthocyanin (4.15, 1.67, 41.3 and 20.1 mg/100 g dry weight in the first year, and 4.06, 3.37, 89.7 and 14.7 mg/100 g dry weight in the second year) than that produced by conventional practice (2.25, 1.11, 38.8 and 6.89 mg/100 g dry in the first year, and 1.96, 2.77, 54.1 and 5.71 mg/100 g dry in the second year). Rice produced by organic practice also had lower sugar content (2.92 g/100 g dry weight in the first year, and 1.99 g/100 g dry weight in the second year) than that produced by conventional practice (3.46 g/100 g dry weight in the first year, and 2.81 g/100 g dry weight in the second year). Gamma oryzanol and antioxidant capacity were also lower in organic rice compared to conventional rice. This study indicated that organic Riceberry rice had a higher quality compared to non-organic rice.

    Relationship between physiological and root traits of peanut genotypes under terminal drought stress

    Drought occurring at all growth phases of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) reduced pod yield and affected the physiological traits. All peanut accessions increased the percentage of root length density (%RLD) in response to terminal drought, but pod yield was greatly reduced. The increases in RLD varied among peanut genotypes. ICGV 98348 and Tifton 8 were the most resistant accessions based on RLD and pod yield. Pod yield was positively correlated with RLD and relative water content. The results would provide a better understanding on the responses of peanut to terminal drought to improve selection efficiency of peanut breeding for drought resistance.
