    Effect of supplemented liquid pigments in the diet on growth performance and body skin color of Jewel cichlid (Hemichromis lifalili) fish

    The weight, average daily gain (ADG), and body skin color values of Jewel cichlid (Hemichromis lifalili) fish were measured on the 0, 30, 60, and 75 days of the experiment. The fish received liquid feed for the first 60 days and no supplementary feed from day 61 to 75. The body weight and ADG of fish raised for 0-30, 0-60, and 0-75 days was not statistically significant differences (p<0.05). However, it was found that fish fed with the supplemented different pigments had different L* and a* values at each stage of the experiment, i.e. when fish were fed with diets containing natural capsanthin and synthetic astaxanthin for 60 days, the L* and a* color values were higher than those of the other groups. The L*, and a* values were lowered after the liquid pigments supplementation was withdrawn.

    Feeding broilers with different amounts of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) under conditions of higher stocking densities and reused litter did not affect growth performance (p>0.05). However, FOS supplementation improved gut health by increasing villus height to crypt depth ratio. It also promoted the growth of Lactobacillus and reduced the incidence of Escherichia coli. The decrease in heterophils to lymphocytes ratio in FOS-supplemented group indicates a reduction in stress levels.

    Thymol-carvacrol supplementation in broilers: impact on performance, blood biomarkers, and gut health

    The stress conditions are induced by a high-dose live coccidiosis vaccine, and thymol-carvacrol supplementation in broilers were significantly improved the feed conversion ratio (FCR) during the starter and grower phases as compared to the negative control. In contrast, antibiotic supplementation resulted in better growth performance throughout the rearing period. In addition, antibiotic supplementation lowered serum levels of the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-17 (IL-17), with thymol-carvacrol supplementation showing comparable but less pronounced effects, followed by the negative control. In addition, antibiotic supplementation improved intestinal morphology as evidenced by the decreased crypt depth and increased villus height to crypt depth ratio, followed by thymol-carvacrol supplementation compared to the non-supplemented groups. These results suggest that thymol-carvacrol supplementation can improve the gut health and performance of broilers under stress conditions.

    Meta-analysis of dietary supplementation with hemp products (Cannabis sativa L.) in broiler chicken: performances, blood profiles, intestinal morphology, and meat physicochemical parameters

    The results showed that dietary hemp products reduced plasma triglycerides (SMD = - 2.263; P < 0.01), cholesterol (SMD = -1.239; P < 0.05), and low-density lipoprotein (SMD = - 5.711; P < 0.01), whereas the plasma high-density lipoprotein (SMD = 3.193; P < 0.01) and jejunal villus height (SMD = 4.536; P < 0.01) were increased. However, broiler performances (average daily feed intake, body weight, feed conversion ratio) and meat physicochemical parameters (pH, lightness, redness, yellowness, crude protein, and ether extract) were not significantly affected. Therefore, the study indicated that dietary hemp products in broiler chicken could improve blood profiles and gut health, suggesting their potential as an alternative feedstuff in broiler production.

    Effect of hempseed products on growth performance, carcass yield, omega-3, and omega-6 fatty acids in broiler: A meta-analysis

    Hempseed is the edible fruit of the Cannabis sativa L. plant, potentially serving as feed ingredients in broiler production due to its high nutritional value. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to determine the effect of hempseed products (seeds, cakes, or oils) on body weight (BW), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass yield (CY), and fatty acid (FA) composition (ω-3 and ω-6) in broiler chicken. Ten eligible publications were retrieved from Google Scholar and Scopus databases for the meta-analysis. The random-effects model was used for data analysis in OpenMEE software. Results were expressed as standardized mean differences (SMD) at 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results show that dietary hempseed products increased ω-3 FA (SMD = 1.107; P<0.05) and ω-6 FA (SMD = 0.987; P<0.01) but reduced BW (SMD = -0.403; P<0.05) and FI (SMD = -0.470; P<0.05) compared to the controls. On the other hand, CY (SMD = 0.053; P>0.05) and FCR (SMD = 0.046; P>0.05) were not significantly influenced by hempseed product supplementation. Subgroup analysis revealed that hempseed oil reduced BW (SMD = -1.041; P<0.05) and FCR (SMD = -0.797; P<0.05) but enhanced both ω-3 FA (SMD = 2.372; P<0.01) and ω-6 FA composition (SMD = 1.630; P<0.01). There were no adverse effects of hempseed and hempseed cake on BW (P>0.05), but a higher FCR (SMD = 0.658; P<0.05) was obtained on broilers fed with hempseed. Moreover, dietary hempseed and hempseed cake also increased ω-3 FA (SMD = 0.952; P<0.05) and ω-6 FA composition (SMD = 1.107; P<0.01), respectively. This study concluded that dietary hempseed products had beneficial effects on the fatty acid composition of meat. However, its effect on growth performance should be considered.

    Effect of dietary protein levels on productive performance and carcass traits of Thai native pigs from different geometric regions

    Southern native pigs (ST) group had significantly higher final weight (P < 0.05). Northern native pigs (NT) had the highest average daily gain (ADG) during the first 21 days of the rearing period (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed cost per gain (FCG) of NT and ST were lower than those of northeastern native pigs (NE) (P < 0.05). The lowest FCG were obtained with 12% and 14% protein diets, and the highest FCG were obtained with 18% protein diet (P < 0.05). For carcass traits, ST had higher slaughter weight, while NT had lower carcass weight, lower percentage of carcass, thinner backfat thickness, lower tenderloin weight, lower fat and skin weight, and lower belly weight, but had higher offal weight, higher percentage of offal and better marbling (P < 0.05). Dietary protein content did not affect carcass traits except for percent belly, because at 18% protein content, percent belly was lower than other groups (P < 0.05). For commercial production, NT could be of greater use because it had lower FCR and FCG without differing significantly in lean content. In addition, NT had higher marbling but lower backfat thickness.

    Effect of strain and gender on production performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of broiler chickens

    The effects of strain and gender on production performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of broiler chickens were examined. There were no significant interactions between broiler strain and gender (P>0.05). Arbor Acres showed significantly higher body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG), while feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly lower than Ross308 and Cobb500, especially in the fifth and sixth weeks of age. Arbor Acres also showed the highest slaughter weight (P<0.05). However, carcass composition was not significantly different between strains. There were no significant differences between the strains in muscle pH, drip loss and cooking loss. However, Cobb500 had a lower shear force value than the others (P<0.05). As for the gender-specific effect, BW and ADG of male broilers were higher than those of females from the second to the sixth week of age (P<0.01). At the second week of age, female broilers had higher FI, while male broilers had higher FI from the third to the sixth week of age (P<0.01). Male broilers had lower FCR than females from the fourth to the sixth week of age (P<0.01). Male broilers had higher slaughter weight, carcass weight and carcass composition weight (P<0.01) except for abdominal fat (P>0.05). Percent carcass composition did not differ among broiler strains except for percent tenderloin and percent abdominal fat, which were higher in females than males (P<0.01). Broiler strains had no effect on meat quality except that Cobb500 had lower shear force (P<0.05). The pH3, pH24 and yellowness color values had differed between genders, which male muscle had higher pH3 (P<0.05), pH24 (P<0.01) than female but female muscle had higher yellowness value than male (P<0.05). Interaction effect between breed and gender was found in lightness (P<0.01) and redness colors (P<0.05).

    The influence of fattening periods on chemical composition, fatty acid profile, cholesterol and ribonucleotide content of Charolaise crossbred steers

    The chemical composition, fatty acid profile, cholesterol, and ribonucleotide content of longissimus thoracis muscle from Charolaise crossbred steers fattened for 12 and 15 months were investigated. Chemical composition did not differ between the two fattening periods. Fat content was 4.38 and 4.66 %, moisture content 72.79 and 71.14 %, ash content 1.24 and 1.23 %, and protein content 23.60 and 23.73 % for fattening periods of 12 and 15 months, respectively. Fatty acid composition was not affected by fattening period, except that C15:0 content was higher in steers fattened for 12 months than in steers fattened for 15 months (P < 0.05). There was no effect of fattening period on cholesterol content (P > 0.05). As for the effect of fattening period on ribonucleotide content, only guanosine monophosphate (GMP) of steers fattened for 12 months was significantly higher than those of steers fattened for 15 months (P < 0.05).

    Influence of age on the incidence of wooden breast and white striping, carcass composition, meat physicochemical property, texture profile, and chemical composition of broiler chickens

    The effects of the age at 43 and 51 days on the incidence of wooden breast (WB) and white striping (WS), carcass composition, meat physicochemical property, textural profile, and chemical composition of broiler chickens were investigated. The frequency and percentage of WB and severity of WS did not differ between age groups. Live weight and carcass weight were affected by age, except the carcass composition percentages. Breast, thigh, wing, and leg weights were not differences between groups. However, the percentage of the thigh was higher in broilers at 51 days of age than at 43 days of age. The percentage of meat physicochemical properties; pH3 and pH24 of broilers at 43 days of age were higher than those at 51 days of age (P<0.01). Broiler meat at 51 days of age had statistically significant higher a<sup>∗</sup>value, while L<sup>∗</sup>, b<sup>∗</sup>, chroma, and hue values were not significant differences. There were not significant differences in drip loss percentage, cooking loss percentage, and shear force value. Hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were higher in 51-day-old broilers than 43-day-old broilers (P<0.05), except the cohesiveness of cooked meat of 51-day-old broilers was higher than that of 43-day-old broilers (P>0.05). For meat chemical composition, the different age groups did not affect the chemical composition, but only the percentage fat content of 51-day-old broilers tended to be higher than that of 43-day-old broilers.

    Effects of different starch sources in concentrates on meat characteristics, nutrient composition, and collagen solubility of dairy steers

    The influences of three different starch sources in concentrates - ground corn (CO), ground cassava (CA), and pineapple stem starch (PI) formulated as a 40% in concentrate - on meat quality, texture profile, nutrient composition, and collagen solubility of the Longissimus thoracis (LT) of dairy steers were investigated. Meat quality and texture profile did not differ significantly between treatments (P>0.05). Nutrient composition did not differ between treatments except that ash content of PI was higher than the other treatments (P<0.05). Starch sources had no effect on collagen content and solubility in LT muscle. Based on the results of this study, pineapple stem starch can be used as an alternative energy source in concentrates without negative effects on meat characteristics.
