A high-speed impact testing method for evaluating mechanical properties of materials is proposed using an inertial mass and a dual beat-frequencies laser Doppler interferometer (DB-LDI). In this method, an inertial mass levitated using an aerostatic linear bearing is made to collide with the material being tested at a high initial velocity. During the collision, the velocity of the mass, which is even higher than the critical velocity (±0.56 m/s) defined by the frequency difference of the Zeeman laser, is accurately measured using the DB-LDI. The position, acceleration, and impact force of the mass are calculated from the measured velocity. Using the proposed method, the mechanical properties of a visco-elastic material under a high-speed impact loading condition can be accurately evaluated. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

A novel method for estimating acceleration directly from the digitized waveform of interference signals is proposed based on a laser Doppler interferometer. In this method, a second-order polynomial function is developed, of which the coefficients are calculated by fitting with the time and corresponding order of zero crossings. Acceleration is calculated as the product of the second-order coefficient and the wavelength of a laser. The performance of this method is evaluated by comparing with the zero crossing method (ZCM) and zero crossing fitting method (ZFM) in simulation. The results show that the accuracy of acceleration calculated by using this method is higher than those by using the ZCM and ZFM, particularly when the signal-to-noise ratio is lower than 40 dB. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We propose a novel system of a nano-waveguide that can be used to generate the continuous spectrum, i.e. white light. The simultaneous trapping and generation of short and millimeter waves can also be performed by using either bright or dark soliton. A system consists of two micro- and a nano-ring resonators that can be integrated into a single system. The large bandwidth is generated by a soliton pulse within a Kerr-type nonlinear medium where the continuous bandwidth or wavelength can be performed. The simultaneous dark-bright solitons conversion is performed and achieved. Results obtained have shown the potential of using the technique for continuing light spectra generation, where the filtering signals are allowed by using the suitable device parameters. The advantage is that the large bandwidth separation of the short and sub-millimeter waves can be obtained, which is allowed to form the simultaneous generation of short and millimeter waves within a single system. Further, light pulse can be trapped within a nano-waveguide, which is available to form the memory device. © 2009 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A new system of a highly tunable visible laser source using a Gaussian pulse propagating within a nonlinear microring resonator system is proposed. Several Gaussian pulses with different center wavelengths are investigated using the designed system. The obtained results have shown that the very fine tuning wavelengths covering the visible laser wavelengths can be generated. With the very sharp peak and broad spectrum, for instance, when the Gaussian input pulse with the center wavelength at 700 nm, the spectral width of 20 pm is obtained. The interesting aspect is that the increasing in microscopic recording pen (i.e. peak) can be used to increase the imaging resolution, where the multicolor imaging, especially for multicolor bio-cell microscopy is the target. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A simple all optical system for stopping and storing light pulses is demonstrated. The system consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a fiber ring resonator. The results show that the multisoliton generation with a free spectrum range of 2.4 nm and a pulse spectral width of 0.96 nm is achieved. The memory time of 15 min and the maximum soliton output power of 5.94 dBm are noted, respectively. This means that light pulses can be trapped, i.e., stopped optically within the fiber ring resonator. © 2009 Chinese Optics Letters.
