Item type:Publication, Effectiveness of bastard oleaster (Elaeagnus latifolia) extracts against the nymph of mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti)(2019-01-01) ;Pumnuan, J. ;Sannongmueang, T. ;Inyod, T.Insung, A.Bastard oleaster (Elaeagnus latifolia) is sometimes gathered from subtropical wild for local use as food, medicine and fuel. The objective of this study was to investigate the insecticidal properties of extracts from leaves and fruits of bastard oleaster against the nymph of mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti) by using leaf dipping method. The different extracts of bastard oleaster as water extract by decoction method, ethanol and hexane extracts by percolation and Soxhlet methods were applied with various concentrations; 0 (5% tween-20 water) 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% (w/v), and imidacloprid insecticide used as positive control. Then the insect mortality was observed at 24 and 48 h, as well as the repellent index (%RI) was observed at 24 h. The results showed that ethanolic extract from bastard oleaster fruits by Soxhlet method and leaves by percolation method were highly effective in killing the nymph of mealybug with the LC50 at 48 h for 2.64 and 2.83%, respectively. The bastard oleaster leaves extracted by percolation and Soxhlet at 5% concentrations showed rather strong effect in repellence when the nymph of mealybug with >52% RI was found within 24 h. In addition, all extracts of bastard oleaster at 5% concentrations were more effective against the nymph of mealybug than imidacloprid insecticide at 24 h. Therefore, extracts from this wild plant, bastard oleaster leaves would be promoted and used as botanical insecticide in the future. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Insecticidal properties of bastard oleaster (Elaeagnus latifolia) extracts against diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella)(2019-01-01) ;Pumnuan, J. ;Sannongmueang, T. ;Inyod, T.Insung, A.Diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella is the major insect pest of cruciferous vegetables in Thailand. When chemicals are wildly used to control this insect pest, it results in an impact on farmer, consumers, environment, and also induces insecticide resistance. The application of plant extracts is an alternatively effective method to fulfill IPM program. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different extracts from leaves and ripe fruit of bastard oleaster (Elaeagnus latifolia), a wild edible plant in Thailand, as water extracts by decoction method, ethanol and hexane extracts by percolation and Soxhlet methods against larvae of DBM. The experiment of insecticidal properties; killing activity, inhibiting growth and anti-feedant by oral test, were investigated on third instar larvae. The leaf dipping method by using various concentrations of extracts, 0.0 (5% tween-20 in water), 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% (w/v) was applied, and then compared with fipronil, prothiofos, deltamethrin and abamectin insecticides. The larval mortality was checked at 24 and 48 h, where the percentages of anti-feedant activity were observed at 24 h. The surviving larvae are feeded with the treated remains until they develop to the mature and adult stages. The result showed that ethanol extract from leave of bastard oleaster by percolation and Soxhlet methods were highly effective in killing the larvae of DBM with the LC50 at 24 and 48 h for 4.94-5.47% and 3.42-3.63%, respectively. Both extracts also showed moderate effectiveness in anti-feedant with >45.0% within 24 h. Ethanol extracts from leave and fruit by percolation and Soxhlet methods presented the best inhibiting growth of DBM when the concentration at 5% caused 67-87% adult mortality. Whereas, all selected insecticides tended to be low toxic to this insect with no difference compared to the ethanol extract of bastard oleaster leave. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, GC-MS analysis and biopesticide properties of different crude extracts of Annona squamosa and Annona muricata(2019-01-01) ;Deewatthanawong, R. ;Kongchinda, P. ;Deewatthanawong, P. ;Pumnuan, J.Insung, A.Most common compounds identified by GC-MS analysis of ethanolic extracts from leaves of Annona squamosa (sweetsop) and Annona muricata (soursop) were neophytadiene, hexadecanoic acid, and trans-caryophyllene. Hexadecenoic acid and ethyl oleate were identified in seeds of A. muricata, while only methyl-p-tert-butyl phenylacetate was identified in seeds extract of A. squamosa. Crude extracts were tested for their antifungal activities against postharvest plant pathogens, insecticidal activities against brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero. Results showed low inhibitory effect (less than 20%) for the pathogenic fungi insecticidal test against cassava mealybug of all crude brown planthopper treated with 5% seed extract of A. squamosa, indicating its potential as an alternative botanical insecticide. Item type:Publication, Quality change on holy basil after fumigation with insecticidal essential oil formula from clove and cinnamon(2018-04-04) ;Pumnuan, J. ;Khurnpoon, L.Insung, A.The essential oil formula from clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum bejolghota) at the ratio of 1:3 (Cl1Ci3) has been recently considered as an effective alternative fumigant against thrips (Thrips palmi) and aphid (Aphis gossypii), which are the major pests attacking exported holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) in Thailand. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the C1Ci3 formula used as fumigant on physical quality of holy basil compared to methyl bromide application. The percentage of insect mortality and change in L*, a* and b* values, as well as weight loss of holy basil, were determined. All fumigations in this study were conducted using the formula Cl1Ci3 at the concentrations of 0.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mL m<sup>-3</sup> for 2 h with 15-min air circulation in 1 m<sup>3</sup> fumigation chamber and compared to methyl bromide at 20 g m<sup>-3</sup> (recommended concentration). The observations of insect mortality were conducted at 24 h after treatment. The holy basil samples were evaluated prior to the treatments, immediately after the treatments, and after 3 and 6 days at 25±1°C. The methyl bromide fumigation showed 100% mortality of all insects and its efficacy was significantly higher than that of the Cl1Ci3 formula (73.9-96.0%). Leaf burning was observed immediately after methyl bromide fumigations. On the other hand, no significant physiological changes were observed on plants fumigated with the Cl1Ci3 formula, as compared to the control. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effectiveness of bottle brush (Callistemon lanceolatus DC.) leaf extracts to control the nymph of mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero)(2018-01-01) ;Sannongmueang, T. ;Pumnuan, J.Insung, A.Mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero) poses a threat to cassava-growing regions of the world. A current global interest has focused on the discovery of non-chemical strategies and environmental friendly pest control approaches. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy in terms of toxicity and repellent properties of hexane, acetone and ethanol crude extracts from leaf of bottle brush (Callistemon lanceolatus DC.) against the nymph of mealybug (P. manihoti) by using leaf dipping method. Various concentrations of bottle brush extract, 0 (5% tween-20 water) 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% (w/v) were applied. Then the insect mortality was observed at 24 and 48 hrs whereas, the repellent index (%RI) was observed at 24 hrs. The results showed that acetone extract from bottle brush was highly effective in killing the nymph of mealybug with the LC50 at 24 and 48 hrs as 3.54 and 2.28 %, respectively. Acetone and ethanol extracts of bottle brush at 2-5% concentrations showed very strong effect in repellence when the nymph of mealybug with >75% RI was found within 24 hrs. Therefore, the acetone extract of bottle brush leaf was highly containing insecticidal activity against nymph of mealybug in laboratory, then the next filed condition substance should be developed. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Changes of cut orchid quality after fumigation with clove and cinnamon essential oils(2015-03-25) ;Pumnuan, J. ;Khurnpoon, L.Insung, A.Clove and cinnamon essential oils have been recently considered as effective alternative fumigants against thrips and mealybug, which are the major pests infecting exported orchid cut flowers in many countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate effects of clove and cinnamon essential oils in non-targeted fumigation on Dendrobium orchid cut flower. Changes in L<sup>∗</sup>, a<sup>∗</sup> and b<sup>∗</sup> values, weight loss, polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activity, total phenolics and anthocyanin content were determined. All fumigations in this study were conducted using the essential oils at the concentrations of 0.0, 3.0 and 6.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> for 1 h with 15-min air circulation in 1-m<sup>3</sup> glass chambers. The effects of eugenol under the same conditions were examined. The samples were evaluated prior to the treatments, immediately after the treatments, and 3 d after the treatments at 25±1°C. The results showed a decrease of L<sup>∗</sup> and a<sup>∗</sup> values, and anthocyanin content in all groups, while b<sup>∗</sup> value, percentage of weight loss and total phenolic content increased. PPO activity did not change throughout the sampling period. Remarkably, the orchids fumigated with clove and cinnamon essential oils, and eugenol at 3.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> did not differ from the control. However, fumigations at 6.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> reduced flower quality, leading to increased weight loss and petal discoloration. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effectiveness of essential oils of medicinal plants against stored product mite, suidasia pontifica oudemans(2012-04-01) ;Pumnuan, J.Insung, A.Acaricidal activity of essential oils obtained from 28 selected medicinal plants against stored product mite, Suidasia pontifica Oudemans, was investigated using the dry film method. The bioassay was conducted in a glass tube, 0.4 cm in diameter, 3 cm long covered with fine nylon mesh on both ends. In preliminary tests, 1.0% (53 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>) of various essential oils and 95% ethanol used as control were evaluated. Each glass tube was treated internally with 20 μl essential oils. Observations were made at 24 h after treatment and the number of dead mites was recorded. At the dose of 1.0%, essential oils of clove (Syzygium aromaticum), cinnamon (Cinnamomum bejolghota), myrtle grass (Acorus calamus), betel vine (Piper betle), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) were highly toxic to S. pontifica with more than 70% mite mortality observed at 24 h. Dry film effect of essential oils at various concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% equaling to 0, 2.65, 5.3, 26.5, 53 and 79.5 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, respectively) resulting in mite mortality observed at 24 h was used to establish LD50 values. Based upon 24 h LD50 values, the essential oil of cinnamon (fresh leaf) was the most toxic to the mite with high activity at 24.05 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, followed by essential oils of clove (dried bud), myrtle grass, cinnamon (dried bark), clove (fresh leaf), turmeric and betel vine at 24.28, 28.34, 30.89, 33.67, 38.09 and 41.76 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, respectively. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Acaricidal effects of herb extracts on the mushroom mites, Luciaphorus perniciosus rack and formicomotes heteromorphus Magowski(2008-01-01) ;Pumnuan, J. ;Insung, A.Chandrapatya, A.Crude methanol, dichloromethane and hexane extracts obtained from the flowers of clove, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry, bark of cinnamon, Cinnamomum bejolghota (Buch.-Ham.) Sweet, rhizome of sweet flag, Acorus calamus L. and seed of black piper, Piper nigrum L., were tested against the mushroom mites Luciaphorus perniciosus Rack and Formicomotes heteromorphus Magowski. A contact method with a completely randomize design was employed. Clove and cinnamon extracts of 125 mg/cm<sup>2</sup> caused 88.7–100% mortality of both mites. Dichloromethane extracts of clove and cinnamon showed the highest toxicity against L. perniciosus and F. heteromorphus with LD<inf>50</inf> values of 34.97 and 20.44 mg/cm<sup>2</sup>, respectively. Methanol extracts of sweet flag and black pepper (125 mg/cm<sup>2</sup>) caused 70–79% L. perniciosus and F. heteromorphus mortalities. Hexane and dichloromethane sweet flag extracts were more toxic to L. perniciosus than the methanol extract of the same plant. Dichloromethane and hexane black pepper crude extracts and methanol extract of sweet flag caused less than 50% L. perniciosus mortality.
