    Reduction of Sound Pressure Levels with Noise Barriers Containing Agricultural Residues: Case Study

    Over the past decade, PM 2.5 pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental concern in Thailand, with one of its primary sources being the open burning of agricultural residues, particularly sugarcane residues. To mitigate this issue, it is essential to develop alternative applications for sugarcane leaves that eliminate the need for burning. This study investigates a sustainable approach by incorporating sugarcane leaves into producing noise insulation mortar boards. The research aims to assess these boards' acoustic performance through a combination of laboratory experiments and field testing. Employing the Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology, mortar samples were prepared with sugarcane leaf content at 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% by cement weight to identify the optimal mixture. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the sugarcane leaf content had a statistically significant effect on sound pressure level reduction at a 95% confidence level. Both laboratory and field results demonstrated that the 4% sugarcane leaf mixture yielded the highest performance, achieving noise reductions of 20.6 dBA and 23 dBA, respectively. These findings confirm that mortar boards reinforced with sugarcane leaves effectively reduce noise and offer a viable solution for repurposing agricultural residues. This approach contributes to noise pollution mitigation and addresses environmental concerns related to the open burning of biomass.

    Design and Development of a Portable Static Stability Training System

    This study presents a portable static stability training system that integrates a custom-built Inertial Measurement Unit, the Motion Signal Detection Device (MSDD), along with an interface program. It provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional force plates, which are expensive and restricted to laboratory use. The MSDD assesses body sway by analyzing acceleration data in three directions and offers real-Time feedback to enhance stability, making it suitable for sports training and rehabilitation. Data were collected from five young adult participants with the following mean demographic characteristics: Age 23 ± 1.22 years, height 167.8 ± 10.23 cm, weight 60.34 ± 10.58 kg, and BMI 21.28 ± 1.69. The study involved three postures: normal stance, single stance, and heel-To-Toe stance. To compare data from two different devices, including force plates (FP) and MSDD, data alignment was analyzed by comparing mean CoP velocities (FP) with sway velocities (MSDD) for each posture. The results indicated that the FP Center of Pressure (CoP) data and MSDD sway paths in the x and y directions exhibited similar trends. Consequently, the MSDD was integrated into the Portable Static Stability Training System for body sway measurement. The interface program, developed using Windows Forms App in Visual Studio 2022, improves usability by monitoring CoP and Base of Support. The principles of limited stability have been implemented to enhance balance control by restricting the center of pressure (CoP) and minimizing body sway within the base of support. The system enables customization of the sway path area limit, allowing for an appropriate challenge based on an individual's balance ability. When CoP exceeds stability limits, the system provides immediate feedback to prompt posture correction. This portable system bridges the gap between laboratory-based measurement tools and practical stability training.

    Energy, economic and environmental (3E) analysis for sustainable development: A case study of a 9.9 MW biomass power plant in Thailand

    In Thailand, the use of biomass for electricity generation has been implemented with incineration technology for many years. However, recent reports indicate that electricity demand is still high and biomass power plant is one of the key factors for electricity management. The major purpose of this research paper is to analyze the energy, economic and environmental features of biomass power plant for the national sustainable development strategy. An existing 9.9 MW biomass power plant located in Suphanburi is selected as the case study to assess thermal combustion for electricity generation. The in-house operations of biomass-based power plant and the process flow of energy in terms of electricity generation using agricultural wastes and forestry residues are provided. Different expenses like capital cost, processing cost, and transportation cost and the major revenue from the sale of electricity are taken into consideration. Five environmental factors (air, sound, water, ash, and transportation) of biomass power plant for sustainability are investigated. Findings from this research project indicate that incineration is a suitable technology for biomass-based electricity generation with considerable profit for all stakeholders.

    Analysis and Prevention of Office Syndrome of People in Thailand

    Office syndrome is dangerous in long-term health such as headache, eyes soreness, neckache, dizziness, chronic muscle pain, numbness around wrists or feet. In severe cases, it may cause the muscles to contract and hold tight. Therefore, understanding the cause can prevent the danger from this illness. The objectives of this research are to study the behaviors causing Office syndrome in Thai by evaluating the basic knowledge of Office syndrome and inform the useful information to prevent the danger of Office syndrome. 312 participants in the age range of 20-40 years answered the online questionnaire as a tool for data collection. The questionnaire is included 3 sections, 1) personal data, 2) the risks of Office syndrome in each person, and 3) basic knowledge of Office syndrome. The results showed that most of the research participants are female, age between 20-27 years old, and work 5-8 hours a day. 224 people are at a high risk of back pain from Office syndrome and only 83 people have received the basic knowledge of Office syndrome. There are 183 people aware of the Office syndrome symptom. This study found that some participants have well-knowledge about Office syndrome but some still misunderstanding the symptoms of the illness. Therefore, the organizations such as companies or schools should provide basic knowledge and quality Office equipment in workplaces to reduce the risks of Office syndrome and create good habits for their people.

    Understanding Harmful Blue Light in a group of Thai People

    Blue light is the light that harmful to health in the long term. Understanding the dangers of blue light could prevent blue light hazards. This study aims to understand the basic knowledge and dangers of blue light. How it could harm people during using computers, tablets, and smartphones as well as to assess the level of knowledge about the usage and dangers of blue light. A questionnaire was used to study the behavior of electronic device users. 150 participants answered the questionnaire about personal information, the dangers of blue light, and the blue light prevention. The results showed that majority of participants have the basic understanding about blue light. People in age range 18-30 years old are most damaged by blue light more than people age 15-17 years old and 31-60 years old respectively. If the people do not protect their eyes, they might have blurred vision or in the worst case they might lose their vision.

    Human factors product design for a prototype of hair loss prevention machine for cancer patients during chemotherapy treatments

    Hair loss is one of the most troubling aspects of chemotherapy to cancer patients. Studies indicate that hair loss affects the cancer patients’ quality of life and becomes a growing concern among women during Chemotherapy treatments. This research project applies Human Factors Product Design principles for building a prototype of low-cost hair loss prevention machine for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. The five-step product design and development process is used in this research project including (1) identifying customer needs, (2) determining product specifications, (3) creating concept generation, (4) making concept selection, and (5) concept testing. Preliminary results from this research project indicate that the new product design of hair loss prevention machine has a great potential for launching new products to the market. However, this prototype of hair loss prevention machine still needs some technical improvements for a better product budget preparation. Limitations and future work on product design and development of hair loss prevention machine are also presented.

    Prevalence, risk factors, and impact on low back pain among nurses in a Thai Public Hospital

    Nursing is one of the occupations with a high risk for the occurrence of low back pain, affecting both health and working abilities. The low back pain management among healthcare professionals could be one of the key implications to prevent and control injuries and accidents related to low back pain. This research aims to study the prevalence, risk factors, impact, and guidelines on low back pain management. Another aim is to assess the low back pain knowledge among working nurses. One hundred nurses (78 females and 22 males) aged 34.2 ± 8.8 years from a Thai public hospital, were participated in this study. The survey was distributed to all participants to access to personal information, work information and low back pain assessment. The results showed that there were about 86 nurses experiencing low back pain at the time of the study. The severity was analyzed according to the Fairbank disability scores from Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaires. There were mild disabilities about 71% among participants. The three greatest impacts of low back pain on the daily activities were standing (31%), sitting (26%) and walking (26%) respectively. Risk factors associated with low back pain were age, body mass index, weight, duration of employment, gender, marital status, job category, smoking and wearing high-heeled shoes. Specific tasks were ranked from the greatest to the least that associated with low back pain. There are following: pushing or pulling loads, twisting the trunk, bending forward or leaning backward, lifting heavy objects with two hands and carrying loads with one hand. The massage therapy, relaxation, and pain killer medication were as common low back pain management among nurses. Most of the nurses assessed their knowledge about low back pain at a moderate level.

    Effects of Industry 4.0 on Human Factors/Ergonomics Design in 21st Century

    The fourth industrial revolution as known as Industry 4.0 becomes a big part of the digitized economy in the 21st century. Industry 4.0 considerably drives the entire supply chain through digital infrastructures and significantly changes work systems. There are many new jobs and work opportunities available for workers with different skill levels due to society and technological changes. Understanding user needs and new technologies is a key factor for the design and development of products and systems where human exists. It is to ensure that the operation and maintenance of such systems are compatible with human abilities and limitations. The purposes of this paper are to explore theoretical and empirical concepts of Industry 4.0 influencing the design of work systems and present factors affecting human factors/ergonomics design in terms of physical, cognitive and organizational perspectives.

    Human Factors Design of Digital Information Systems for Inspection Body (IB) in Industry 4.0 Era

    Industry 4.0 highly considers new industrial products and services platforms where various emerging technologies are combining to implement for digital solutions. Digital transformation plays a significant role in the disruption of the traditional information systems and drives the business to digitalization. The Inspection Body (IB) conducts technical assessments, generally by providing factory/business inspection services on behalf of private customers or their parent organizations to provide them with industrial product certification and/or information on compliance with legislation, standards, specifications, and contractual commitments. Importantly, data accuracy, traceability, and confidentiality controls are critical for IB operations where the digital information systems can significantly enhance the planning, managing, and monitoring of the IB’s Management Information System (MIS). This paper presents both theoretical and practical applications of human factors product design and development to make a useful and easy to use digital information systems for IB. Major methods for human factors design includes the focus of potential users, the empirical measurement of usage, and the iterative design where the simulated, prototype, and real models are created. Limitations and future work for human factors design for digital information systems in other industrial businesses are also discussed.

    Is Sick Building Syndrome Existing in Thailand?

    Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a group of illnesses associated with the building. From the standard comparison, all standards are aware of Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen dioxide, and Ozone. The Ministry of Public Health of Thailand has established the air quality standards in Thailand based on Singapore. But after that, Singapore standards adjusted PM 2.5 down, but Thailand still uses Singapore’s old standard. So, the PM 2.5 value of Thailand is higher than every standard. There are many studies, which study the prevalence, factors, and symptoms of sick building syndrome. They have different results because of different environments. Thai people are not aware of the sick building syndrome, although it is very close to them. Because in the past, Thai people lived in houses with space under houses, providing good ventilation. But nowadays, Thai people have changed to live in the building. They are increasingly exposed to sick building syndrome. Sick building syndrome protection can do in various ways.
