This paper proposes a multifunctional drive system for closed loop speed control of an unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor. A two-phase three-leg voltage source inverter providing constant Volts/Hz and slip regulation control for a machine end converter employs time-based discontinuous space vector pulse width modulation in order to reduce switching loss. A hysteresis current control technique of a single-phase full bridge regenerative PWM rectifier as a front-end converter utilizes source current as a feedback signal instead of converter current. The front-end converter offers multi-functionality of not only bidirectional real power flow but also acting as an active power filter responsible for reactive power and harmonic compensations for various types of nonlinear loads in conjunction with the drive system. As a result, the grid current waveform is nearly sinusoidal and the grid power factor is near unity power factor. With the proposed discontinuous unbalanced space vector pulse width modulation (DUSVPWM) method, the two-phase three-leg inverter provides optimum unbalanced two-phase voltages with orthogonal displacement appropriate for the unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor which is able to improve the converter efficiency. The overall control system is implemented on a low-cost DSP board. The validity of the proposed system is verified by both simulation and experimental results. The capability of the drive under various conditions is satisfactory.

This paper presents a soft starting method for a modified three-phase induction motor using a single-phase synchronous PWM AC chopper to reduce starting current and electromagnetic torque pulsation. The modified motor functions as a single-phase induction motor due to the lack of a three-phase source and employs an appropriate capacitor. The synchronous single-phase PWM AC chopper provides several benefits over traditional thyristor soft starters, including a linear relationship between fundamental voltage and modulation index, improved voltage control, and lower harmonic currents. A cost-effective microcontroller gradually increases the duty cycle to create PWM signals for soft starting, achieving nearly a 65% reduction in starting current compared to direct online starting. Simulation and experimental results confirm enhanced starting performance, making it suitable for applications such as water and air pumps.

This paper proposes the experimental implementation of a small-scale Electric Vehicle (EV) simulator system using PI and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controllers. The proposed power train system includes lithium-ion battery, a bidirectional dc-dc converter, a Permanent Magnet DC (PMDC) motor drive acting as a load emulator and a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive acting as EV traction. The designed simulator is a reduced scale referring to the realistic EV. Charging and discharging operation of the lithium-ion battery as a power source is controlled by two PI controllers namely one for constant battery charging current and the another for constant dc link voltage using the bidirectional DC-DC converter in buck and boost modes of operation, respectively. A discontinuous PWM scheme for each switch in controlling battery current and dc bus voltage is employed for such bidirectional dc-dc converter to reduce switching loss. The PI based torque control of the PMDC motor is designed and implemented to meet requirement of road profiles. The ANFIS based speed control is used to obtain accurate speed as required values of the BLDC motor driving EV wheels. The actual speed is compared to the reference speed used as an input of the ANFIS technique in order to obtain the suitable motor voltage and frequency. The overall system performances such as regenerative braking and motoring modes of operation in different speeds according to road profile scenarios, dynamic response, and so on have been investigated. It is found that the testing results are satisfactory. The proposed EV simulator is useful for educational purposes.

This paper proposes a carrier-based Discontinuous Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Technique (DSVPWM) using analog circuits for a two-phase three-leg Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) providing balanced and unbalanced output phase voltages. The aim of this technique is to reduce the number of commutation in a fundamental period resulting in a reduction in switching loss, electromagnetic interference and stress of devices. The analog circuit implementation of Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is based on mathematical expressions. Unlike a digital technique in modulation, a sinusoidally modulating signal is naturally compared with a triangular carrier for the analog technique without sampling. As a consequence the harmonic distortion of the load current is reduced particularly for low switching frequency. Also, with this technique, very high switching frequency is possible due to inherently wide bandwidth characteristics of the circuits. Apart from the hardware implementation, the simulation using MATLAB/Simulink has also been conducted to confirm the validity of the proposed technique. Additionally the proposed analog modulator is applied to a two-phase three-leg VSI for performance testing under various operating conditions in order to evaluate inverter losses associated with both continuous and discontinuous types of SVPWM. The simulation and experimental results illustrate that the discontinuous modulation technique is able to decrease the inverter losses and gives approximately up to 3 percent higher efficiency of the system when compared to the conventional continuous one.

This paper presents performance improvement with optimum voltage compensation of a vector control based unsymmetrical Two-Phase squirrel cage Induction Generator (TPIG) with closed loop speed control using carrier-based space vector pulse width modulation. Indirect Field-Oriented Control (IFOC) of the induction generator is used to achieve fast response and good accuracy. The proposed system consists of a two stage AC-DC-AC link equipped with bidirectional power flow between the machine and the single-phase grid. The DC link voltage is kept constant at the reference value by using hysteresis current control of the grid side converter resulting in rectification and inversion modes of operation with high-power factor and nearly sinusoidal current waveform. A Carrier-Based Space Vector Modulation (CBSVPWM) technique is used for controlling a two-phase three-leg voltage source converter providing balanced and unbalanced voltages with an optimum value of voltage compensation. The experimental results show that the system performance for unbalanced supplied voltages with the optimum value of the compensation of the machine is better than that for balanced supplied voltages in terms of power transfer to the grid, electromagnetic torque pulsation and speed ripple.

High Performance Unsymmetrical Two-Phase Induction Motor Drive with Direct Torque Control Based on Unbalanced SVPWM Technique
    (2024-01-01)

This paper proposes a high performance unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor drive using unbalanced space vector pulse-width modulation based direct torque control (USVPWM-DTC). The merit of this technique is that both electromagnetic torque and flux are directly controlled without redundancy of the current loop control. A stator flux oriented reference frame is used. PWM signals are generated on the basis of reference voltage vectors. With optimum unbalanced winding voltages, the proposed USVPWM-DTC can overcome a torque pulsation problem resulting from unbalanced parameters of both windings of the motor. Unlike a conventional look up table voltage vector method, the proposed method offers constant switching frequency over a wide range of operating frequency. As a consequence, it is able to cope with several problems such as a stator flux droop problem during sector transition, high current and torque ripple and high noise level. The magnitude of the stator flux is kept constant under various operating conditions and its ripple can also be reduced resulting in performance improvement. The overall drive system is implemented on a real - time DSP TMS320F240 board via dSPACE DS1104 interface card. Furthermore, the proposed system offers more or less fifty percent faster response and almost eighty percent lower torque ripple of electromagnetic torque when compared to a balanced two-phase output space vector pulse width modulation (BSVPWM-DTC) strategy. Experimental results of a 370 W unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor drive under various conditions, such as four quadrant operation, stator flux trajectory, and harmonic spectrum, are presented to demonstrate the viability of the proposed technique which are satisfactory.

This paper presents a soft starting comparison of a single-phase, 1 hp, 220 V, 4.8 A, four-pole capacitor-start capacitor-run induction machine between motoring and generating mode of operation when connected to a grid using single-phase PWM AC chopper. An asynchronous PWM strategy is used for controlling the machine voltage with the AC chopper during soft start with a reason of simplicity. The PWM AC chopper offers some advantages over a conventional ac voltage controller using phase control in terms of harmonic reduction and linear relationship between fundamental voltage and duty ratio. The comparison of waveforms of starting currents, voltages, instantaneous power under direct on line and soft connection conditions is given when the machine operates as a generator and a motor during startup. According to experimental results, it is found that when starting the connection, the generator offers lower starting current compared to the motor and the soft starter can reduce starting current to one fifth when compared to direct on line start.

This paper proposes a vector control drive system for a two-phase induction generator. The system comprises a single-phase full-bridge grid converter and a two-phase three-leg voltage source inverter, both controlled using vector control. The grid converter utilizes voltage-oriented control, the inverter is managed through field-oriented control. This approach enhances the electromagnetic torque performance of the two-phase induction generator. The system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink, and the simulation results indicate that the generator torque exhibits a smooth and fast transient response. Additionally, the grid current of the system closely approximates a sinusoidal waveform with a near unity power factor.

This paper propose the mathematical model simulation of a wind turbine power generation system using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The 5-phase synchronous permanent magnet generator is a device that converts mechanical energy from wind turbines into electrical energy. The electrical power is passed through a non-linear load as a rectifier using 10 diodes per 5-phase for further conduction through the inverter and grid connection. The simulation results show the voltage output from the generator in all 5 phases, the rotor speed, stator current, and electromagnetic torque. When adjusting the speed according to the characteristics of the wind that is fed to the wind turbine, the rotor speed is adjusted. Stator current, torque and voltage also change.
