The efficiency of the Aero Gas Turbine in a combine cycle power plant (CCPP) is maximum under the conditions that the combustion chamber temperature is highest, the compressor is working at full capacity and all bleed valves are closed. The Inlet Air Heating System is therefore used to improve the efficiency of the machines in low power generation conditions. To ensure stability in response to air temperature and machine capacity changes, this work thus proposes an optimization-based automation system designed to stabilize the CCPP. Results show that under changing conditions, the overall efficiency of the air compressors in low load conditions increases by 3%, shortening the system start time of 15 minutes and improving the efficiency of the combined cycle power plant by an average of 100 BTU / kw.hr. The average fuel cost is reduced by approximately 600,000 baht per month.

This work aims to present an application of water level control system for a three-element cascade drum boiler with a PID controller. The PID control value was divided into two control ranges, including peak mode operation during high power consumption and off-peak mode operation during low power consumption for a combined cycle power plant. The feedforward part was the flow rate, while the feedback part was the water level in the drum boiler. Such variables consisted of steam output flow rate, feed water flow rate and water level in the drum boiler. The optimization method was applied for calculating the parameters of the water level controller in the drum boiler. As a result, it was found that the PID controller with divided control phases was able to clearly control the water level of the drum boiler better than a single PID controller. It was able to handle transient and rapid processes very well. For example, shrink and swell effects of water in a drum boiler caused by the fluctuation of the pressure inside the boiler. This method could be used practically for controlling the water level in power plant drum boilers.

This paper designs a model based control system for the heat exchanger system with accumulative heat reservoir. The heat exchanger system was firstly modelled through the set of five differential equations, that also take into account the heat accumulation inside the reservoirs. Temperature data was obtained through the use of a temperature sensor (LM 35) which is connected to LabView through a DAQ. The collected data was then processed using an integral based method to determine the parameters of the heat exchanger system. The appropriate PID gains are selected by pole placement methodology. Results show that the set of PID gains that were determined through the use of calculations outperformed the arbitrary chosen set of gains.

This paper proposes an integral-based method for parameter identification of the coupled tank model used in level control. The plant uses WirelessHART communication protocol to interact between devices in the system, which has a data update rate of 8 seconds, causing time delay impacting the stability of the control system. Two models are considered. The first model is the simple linear model where the delay from the WirelessHART is assumed to be negligible. The second model extends this first model, and introduces nonlinearity from the WirelessHART delay into the model. Results showed that although the both the linear and non linear models provides a good match to the WirelessHART-affected plant responses, the nonlinear model provides on average a 25% better match than the linear model. This model and method can be used to design a more effective controller to combat the WirelessHART induced delay systems.

This paper presents the mobile robot that is able to mobilize in every direction through the use of four DC-motors-powered mecanum wheels. Each wheel can be programmed to rotate independently, allowing the vehicle to move in any direction without first turning, and thus can be used to navigate in narrow fields. The robot is controlled through the use of the Programmable Logic Controller CP1H-XA40DT-D, that takes the user intended direction from a joystick command and converts this command into movement vectors in conjunction to the mathematical kinematics model of the mecanum wheels. The motors themselves are controlled from the PWM signals. Two speed experiments were conducted. The first experiment tests the speed of the robot in a no-load environment, whilst the second tests the robot speed in a 50-kg loaded environment. Results show that the maximum attainable speed is around 31.9 ms − 1 with a drop of about 10% for the case of the added load from the no-load condition. This result validates the proposed applicability of the prototype as a wheelchair as well as a self-control shopping cart.

Optimized water management strategies are among the most crucial concerns in a biomass power plant. Especially during the times of water scarcity, an improper water supply planning and operation result in a detrimental power generation or shut down processes. This paper aims to propose the cyber-physical cloud computing (CPCC), a mechanism of analysis and control physical process using cloud-based framework, in order to improve the efficiency of water management system in a biomass power plant. In this study, a 9.9 MW biomass power plant is implemented to investigate the performance of CPCC. The architecture of the proposed system consists of three physical tiers. The first tier is a tier of physical devices included with pressure, flow, pH sensors, water pumps and valves that are responsible for detecting the physical data and interacting with the water production process. The second tier is an edge computing device which functions as a controller, embedded server, data storage, gateway and switch to manage all operational tasks in an intranet area. The third tier is a cloud computing system which enables big data applications such as online monitoring and visualization of process operation, adaptive filtration fouling control, consuming water and total water cost analysis. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed system as the ability of an adaptive fouling control system to adjust backwash scheduling and chemical dosing so that achieving the target of purified water quality even during the fluctuation of raw water qualities. Subsequently, the water treatment system can achieve the capability for optimal total water cost operations under a target permeate flow rate and the percent of the recovery. Significantly, the data analytics in the CPCC reflect current operational requirements of water under local climate conditions, likewise contribute to the practical solution for sustainable water resource planning in the energy production.

Integral-based algorithm for parameter identification of the heat exchanger

This paper develops an integral based method for the system identification and modeling of the heat exchanger. The proposed method formulates the model through the use of integrals, thus rendering a nonconvex optimization problem into simple linear optimization which can be solved through an ordinary least squares method. The convection heat exchanger model is firstly assumed, whereby all the inlet and outlet temperatures are measured or known. Two experiments were conducted. The first involved a series of step responses with incremental heating input, whilst the second involved step responses taken only after the system has cooled down to room temperature. Results show that the proposed method allowed a more complicated model of the heat exchanger to be constructed, whilst still being robust to Gaussian and quantization as well as encoder noises.

This paper presents the approach to design Temporal Logic embedded controller for temperature control applications that require both precision control and affordable costs. The proposed Temporal Logic embedded control system which is based on form of On-Off control devices can provide high precision and accuracy, furthermore; decrease the damage to contactors and valves by slowing down the control cycling. The performance of control system was tested with Fio board, STM32F103RE ARM 32-bits microcontroller, Real-Time Workshop Embedded Coder and Simulink program. The time domain characteristics were compared with On-Off Stateflow and PID control method. The experimental results have been shown that the design of Temporal Logic embedded controller can achieve the performance specification requirement in temperature control. © 2011 ICROS.

Smith Predictor control is theoretically a good solution to the problem of controlling the time delay systems. However, it seldom gets use because it is almost impossible to find out a precise mathematical model of the practical system and very sensitive to uncertain system with variable time-delay. In this paper is concerned, with a design method, of smith predictor for temperature control system by Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM). The simulation results show that the control system with smith predictor design by CDM is stable and robust whilst giving the desired time domain system performance. © ICROS.

A control system design with Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM) is proven that effective for SISO control design. But the control system design for MIMO via CDM is not concrete procedure. In this paper presents the control system design method for quadruple-tank process via CDM. By using the decentralized method for both non-minimum phase and minimum phase are made. The results from Integral-Proportional (I-P) controller's design via CDM and standard Proportional-Integral (PI) controls are also shown to compare the merits of the proposed controllers. © 2004IEEE.
