Item type:Publication, Investigating performance ecologies using screen scores: a case study(2023-10-01) ;Masu, Raul ;Bettega, Mela ;Correia, Nuno N.Romão, TeresaThe purpose of this paper is to deepen the understanding of interconnections among actors and artifacts in a music performance. To this end, this work presents a case study with four participants. Each participant created a piece using Puffin, a screen score system that allows for real-time generation of scores to be played by traditional instrumentalists. We collected field notes and interviews and formalized them with the support of ARCAA (Actors, Role, Context, Activities and Artifacts), a recently developed framework specifically developed for this purpose. By discussing the resulting ecology we highlight some possible design suggestions, including the importance of considering non-direct interaction with a digital system as fundamental for a good “usage” of a given musical system; the relevance of accounting for the entire ecology of artifacts; and that different conceptions of affordances should be used to understand different perspectives of an ecology (in our case, social and hidden affordances). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The O in NIME: Reflecting on the Importance of Reusing and Repurposing Old Musical Instruments(2023-01-01) ;Masu, Raul ;Morreale, FabioJensenius, Alexander RefsumIn this paper, we reflect on the focus of “newness” in NIME research and practice and argue that there is a missing O (for “Old”) in framing our academic discourse. A systematic review of the last year’s conference proceedings reveals that most papers do, indeed, present new instruments, interfaces, or pieces of technology. Comparably few papers focus on the prolongation of existing NIMEs. Our metaanalysis identifies four main categories from these papers: (1) reuse, (2) update, (3) complement, and (4) long-term engagement. We discuss how focusing more on these four types of NIME development and engagement can be seen as an approach to increase sustainability. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Sharing the Same Sound: Reflecting on Interactions between a Live Coder and a Violinist(2023-01-01) ;Dal Rì, Francesco Ardan ;Zanghellini, FrancescaMasu, RaulThis paper introduces a performative ecosystem created with the aim of promoting a joint expression between a live coder and an instrumentalist. The live coding environment is based on TidalCycles1, controlling a sample machine implemented in SuperCollider2. The instrumentalist can record short samples of his/her playing in different buffers, which the live coder can then process. The ecosystem was intensively used by the first and the second author of this paper (respectively live coder and violinist) to develop a performance. At the end of this paper, we provide a number of reflections on the entanglement of the different roles and agencies that emerged during the rehearsals. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Off-the-shelf digital tools as a resource to nurture the commons(2022-08-19) ;Bettega, Mela ;Masu, Raul ;Hansen, Nicolai BrodersenTeli, MaurizioCommons and commoning are of increasing interest to the PD community. We argue that off-the-shelf digital commons can be used in the context of PD to support groups in their commoning practices. This approach presents some advantages: it allows focusing resources on participation rather than software development and it fosters sustainability of results when researchers leave. But how do we understand whether an off-the-shelf tool can be considered a commons or not? Where do we find digital commons? How do we select them? In this paper, we will try to answer these questions by proposing theoretical considerations and practical criteria based on the reflexive account of a case study in Europe.
