This paper proposes a multifunctional drive system for closed loop speed control of an unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor. A two-phase three-leg voltage source inverter providing constant Volts/Hz and slip regulation control for a machine end converter employs time-based discontinuous space vector pulse width modulation in order to reduce switching loss. A hysteresis current control technique of a single-phase full bridge regenerative PWM rectifier as a front-end converter utilizes source current as a feedback signal instead of converter current. The front-end converter offers multi-functionality of not only bidirectional real power flow but also acting as an active power filter responsible for reactive power and harmonic compensations for various types of nonlinear loads in conjunction with the drive system. As a result, the grid current waveform is nearly sinusoidal and the grid power factor is near unity power factor. With the proposed discontinuous unbalanced space vector pulse width modulation (DUSVPWM) method, the two-phase three-leg inverter provides optimum unbalanced two-phase voltages with orthogonal displacement appropriate for the unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor which is able to improve the converter efficiency. The overall control system is implemented on a low-cost DSP board. The validity of the proposed system is verified by both simulation and experimental results. The capability of the drive under various conditions is satisfactory.

This paper proposes a high performance unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor drive using unbalanced space vector pulse-width modulation based direct torque control (USVPWM-DTC). The merit of this technique is that both electromagnetic torque and flux are directly controlled without redundancy of the current loop control. A stator flux oriented reference frame is used. PWM signals are generated on the basis of reference voltage vectors. With optimum unbalanced winding voltages, the proposed USVPWM-DTC can overcome a torque pulsation problem resulting from unbalanced parameters of both windings of the motor. Unlike a conventional look up table voltage vector method, the proposed method offers constant switching frequency over a wide range of operating frequency. As a consequence, it is able to cope with several problems such as a stator flux droop problem during sector transition, high current and torque ripple and high noise level. The magnitude of the stator flux is kept constant under various operating conditions and its ripple can also be reduced resulting in performance improvement. The overall drive system is implemented on a real - time DSP TMS320F240 board via dSPACE DS1104 interface card. Furthermore, the proposed system offers more or less fifty percent faster response and almost eighty percent lower torque ripple of electromagnetic torque when compared to a balanced two-phase output space vector pulse width modulation (BSVPWM-DTC) strategy. Experimental results of a 370 W unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor drive under various conditions, such as four quadrant operation, stator flux trajectory, and harmonic spectrum, are presented to demonstrate the viability of the proposed technique which are satisfactory.

This paper proposes an unsymmetrical two-phase induction motor propulsion coupling with separately-excited DC generator by Matlab/Simulink. This propulsion composes of two parts. One is two-phase three-leg voltage source inverter by means of continuous unbalanced space vector pulse width modulation for the induction motor, which is controlled by slip regulation control. The other is four-quadrant DC chopper supplied with constant DC-link voltage of a three-phase grid-connected converter, which feed into armature winding of the DC generator using torque control. The simulation results was found that the induction motor was capable of constant speed at 1,450 rpm while taken load at 10 Nm with torque control of the four-quadrant DC chopper for DC generator. Furthermore, The DC generator was able to flow power to grid by the grid-connected converter. To conclude, the propulsion is good, since grid current in the generator drive part was nearly sinusoidal waveform and power in the same part can flow to grid, which can save energy and improve power factor.

This paper presents a performance evaluation and a simple speed control method of an asymmetrical parameter type two-phase induction motor drive using a three-leg VSI (Voltage Source Inverter). The two-phase induction motor is adapted from an existing single-phase induction motor resulting in impedance unbalance between main and auxiliary windings. The unbalanced two-phase inverter outputs with orthogonal displacement based on a SPWM (Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation) method are controlled with appropriate amplitudes for improving the motor performance. Dynamic simulation of the proposed drive system is given. A simple speed controller based on a slip regulation method is designed. The overall system is implemented on a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) board. The validity of the proposed system is verified by simulation and experimental results. © 2010 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper presents a simple speed control method of an asymmetrical parameter type two-phase induction motor drive using a three-leg voltage source inverter (VSI). The two-phase induction motor is adapted from an existing single-phase induction motor resulting in impedance unbalance between main and auxiliary windings. Thus in order to improve the performance it needs an unbalanced phase supply. Mathematical model is derived for the simulation. The design of a speed controller is fully given. The overall system is implemented on a DSP board. The validity of the proposed system is verified by simulation and experimental results.
