This paper presents a technique to optimize the communication schedules generated for synchronization of Foundation Fieldbus H1 devices in cascade control loop. A level-to-flow cascade control operated by the Harmonas-DEO host system is examined as an illustrative case study. Major objectives of the optimization are not only to minimize the latency of the control loop but also to maximize the availability of the network bandwidth. The proposed technique can be applied for H1 segment macrocycle schedules performing the control functions in both of the host controller and the field devices. Three examples for optimizing communication schedules generated from different control block assignments are described. The validation of the optimization methods can be determined by using two metrics: control loop latency improvement and publication gap availability improvement. Experimental results confirm that the proposed technique works effectively to operate the studied H1 segment for cascade control without any problems.

This paper presents a technique to configure Foundation Fieldbus devices for process control. The technique applies Foundation Fieldbus (FF) function blocks to cooperate with User-blocks of Siemens PLC. Function Block (FB), Function Call (FC), Data Block (DB) of PLC and FF function blocks are applied to create the assigned control program. In addition, S7 hardware, STEP7 Software, HMI, and OPC are described for hardware configuration, monitoring, diagnostics, and network configuration. The experiment indicates that proposed technique can implement the monitoring and controlling of Foundation Fieldbus Control System (FFCS) with S7 PLC. Moreover, the technique will support end-user to confirm the interoperability concept which avails for low maintenance cost and enhance data available from the field devices. © 2014 ICIC International.

This paper presents a system integration of modern digital fieldbus and traditional analog devices for revamping projects. Using temperature transmitter with Foundation Fieldbus technology and power regulator with 4-20 mA control input for temperature control based on a PID instruction of programmable logic controller (PLC) is examined as an illustrative case study. A portable plant model was designed and implemented for real hands-on training. In addition, basic network and device configurations as well as ladder logic program and graphical user interface creations are discussed. Experimental results of temperature control in the range of 40-60 °C verifying the proposed concept are also included.

This article focuses on a design and implementation of the laboratory for education of Foundation Fieldbus-based industrial automation. A Centum VP system connected with level-control plant model via field digital network is described as an illustrative case study for configuring and commissioning fieldbus segment, defining control strategy, designing human machine interface (HMI) screen, and troubleshooting.
