Item type:Publication, Bone drilling by using microwave ablation; FEM investigation(2013-12-01) ;Phairoh, C. ;Sanpanich, A. ;Kajornpredanon, Y. ;Thanangkul, S.Apaiwong, C.Bone drilling by using heat energy from microwave is a promising research issue and has been proposed by some researcher. However, there are still some interesting topics remaining to be investigated especially in term of a temperature variation during burning or drilling process and a prediction of an extreme burning size or drilling diameter. In this paper, we propose an FEM investigation of bone drilling by using microwave thermal ablation emphasizing on a temperature distribution pattern and temperature variation at a hot spot of a cutting-end antenna. Bone phantom was modeled as two solid layers as cortical and bone marrow part. Simulation was implemented in three different applicator positions in bone model as a top surface, middle and near marrow. The obtained simulation results give us useful information to design more suitable and practicable applicator for heat pattern focusing in a compact bone tissue and also encourage us to validate with a bovine bone in near future. © 2013 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Comparison FEM study of microwave and radio frequency ablation in breast phantom model(2012-12-01) ;Sanpanich, A. ;Drechsel, H. ;Angkhananuwat, W. ;Khongkhanon, C.Rattanakajornsak, R.Thermal ablation by using energy from an electromagnetic wave in microwave and radiofrequency range is widely accepted as an alternative therapeutic maneuver for an internal cancer treatment as a breast tumor. However a comparison study between these two techniques are still an interesting topic especially in term of main control parameters, output and outcome of an expect coagulation zone. In this research, we propose a comparison investigation of microwave and radiofrequency ablation in a breast phantom model by using FEM. Our breast model is originally and specially designed as a multi-layer tissue in order to close to a real human breast organ. The simulation results show an interesting different output from these two EMW frequencies as an ablation power, treatment time and also coagulation area significantly. ©2012 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Opened-tip applicator and ex vivo experimental results for microwave breast cancer ablation(2012-11-26) ;Sanpanich, A. ;Kajornpredanon, Y. ;Phasukkit, P. ;Tungjitkusolmun, S.Pintavirooj, C.Breast cancer is one of the main health hazard that threatening women life all over the world. Not only her own daily life, but also her own family whom suffering from this poor fate. Besides from a breast resection, microwave ablation is also another effective therapeutic technique for glandular tissue cancer treatment due to its minimal invasive maneuver. In this paper, we propose a study of an opened-tip applicator ablation for breast cancer therapy. The investigation was preliminary performed by using finite element method to analyze a characteristic of antenna and to simulate a 2.45 GHz electromagnetic wave phenomenon in living tissue then following by ex vivo experiment with female swine breast. In term of FEM simulation, full 3D distribution pattern of SAR, temperature and also estimated destructive tissue area in a complicated CAD model of cancerous breast was analyzed. Real ablation with an ultrasound-guided applicator insertion was implemented to confirm an effective result. This study not only shows a promising result but also encourage us to develop an advance microwave ablation system in near future. © 2012 IEEE.
