This study explored the tensile and impact strength of polylactic acid (PLA) through the incorporation of sisal and coir fibers. Hybrid natural fiber composites were prepared using PLA as the matrix and sisal and coir fibers as the reinforcements. The hybrid composites were prepared with an internal mixer, followed by compression molding. A constrained mixture design was employed to determine the optimal material combinations and their effects on the tensile and impact strength. Confirmatory experiments based on response surface methodology revealed no significant differences in the data means at the 0.05 significance level. PLA reinforced with sisal fibers alone exhibited the highest tensile strength of 75.36 MPa but demonstrated a low impact resistance of 12.94 kJ/m2 at a 95.22:4.78 (PLA:sisal by volume) ratio. Conversely, the maximum impact resistance of 36.71 kJ/m2 was achieved with PLA and coir at the same ratio. An optimal blend, consisting of 95.22% PLA, 0.78% sisal, and 4.0% coir by volume, resulted in a tensile strength of 51.08 MPa and an impact strength of 26.59 kJ/m2, outperforming other mixtures and pure PLA in the mechanical properties. Additionally, water absorption tests showed that reinforcement with sisal and coir fibers increased both water absorption and stability over 60 h.

Materials and manufacturing technologies are necessary for tissue engineering and developing temporary artificial extracellular matrices. In this study, scaffolds were fabricated from freshly synthesized titanate (Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf>) and its precursor titanium dioxide and their properties were investigated. The scaffolds with improved properties were then mixed with gelatin to form a scaffold material using the freeze-drying technique. To determine the optimal composition for the compression test of the nanocomposite scaffold, a mixture design with three factors of gelatin, titanate, and deionized water was used. Then, the scaffold microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the porosity of the nanocomposite scaffolds. The scaffolds were fabricated as a nanocomposite and determined their compressive modulus values. The results showed that the porosity of the gelatin/Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf> nanocomposite scaffolds ranged from 67% to 85%. When the mixing ratio was 100:0, the degree of swelling was 22.98%. The highest swelling ratio of 85.43% was obtained when the freeze-drying technique was applied to the mixture of gelatin and Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf> with a mixing ratio of 80:20. The specimens formed (gelatin:titanate = 80:20) exhibited a compressive modulus of 30.57 kPa. The sample with a composition of 15.10% gelatin, 2% Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf>, and 82.9% DI water, processed by the mixture design technique, showed the highest yield of 30.57 kPa in the compression test.

The purpose of this research was to learn the formation of biomedical scaffold material from gelatin by using titanate (Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf>), which is a newly synthesized derivative of titanium dioxide (TiO<inf>2</inf> ) with gelatin. It was prepared by mixed several solutions and cross-linked molecules by heating and salt-leaching. The biomedical scaffold was formed, and its porosity depended on the size of the salt crystal. The mixture was designed by using a mixture design with three factors: gelatin, titanate, and deionized water to determine the optimal mixture for the tensile strength of the biomedical scaffold. The microstructure of the biomedical scaffold was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The findings revealed that Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf> thoroughly pen-extracted the biomedical scaffold, and the tensile strength of the gelatin/titanate scaffold was higher than the biomedical scaffold, which was formed using pure gelatin. By using the mixture design technique, the 14.73% gelatin, 0.2% Na<inf>2</inf>Ti<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7</inf>, and 85.07% DI water got the highest yield of tensile strength (1508.15 kP). This was an about 4.88% increase in the tensile strength property when compared with using TiO<inf>2</inf> .

Food waste (FW) utilized as substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD) to produce biogas is promising. Simultaneously, waste is handled and value-added products such as biogas and fertilizer are produced. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is used as the co-substrate. This study aims to simulate the complete process flow of anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD), consisting of pre-treatment of feedstock, biogas upgrading, wastewater treatment and sludge dying using SuperPro Designer. Parameters, namely hydraulic retention time (HRT), recycle ratio of sludge, water to FW ratio (kg/kg) and co-substrate to FW ratio (kg/kg), would affect the performance of digester. The optimization of these parameters is performed using Design-Expert software, involving response surface methodology (RSM). The effects on responses such as methane flow, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile solid (VS) removal efficiencies are analyzed. In treating 25,000 kg/h of feed, the optimized values for HRT, recycle ratio, water to feedstock ratio, POME to FW ratio are 37.2 days, 0.381, 0.027 and 0.004, respectively. The methane yield is 0.30 L CH<inf>4</inf>/g of COD removed, with COD and VS removal efficiencies of 81.5% and 68.9%, respectively. The project is profitable, with a payback period of 6.14 years and net present value (NPV) of $5,680,000. A comprehensive understanding of AD matures it for commercialization purposes.

This study focuses on the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), dissipation of electrostatic discharge (ESD), and surface resistivity of polymer blends between polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) filled with carbon black powder (CBp) and carbon black masterbatch (CBm). The mixtures of PC/ABS/CB composites were prepared by the injection molding for the 4-mm thickness of the specimen. The D-optimal mixture design was applied in this experiment. The EMI SE was measured at the frequency of 800 and 900 MHz with a network analyzer, MIL-STD-285. The result showed that the EMI SE was increased when the amount of filler increased. The surface resistivity of the composites was determined according to the ASTM D257. It was found that the surface resistivity of the plastic with no additives was 1012 Ω/square. When the amount of fillers was added, the surface resistivity of plastic composites decreased to the range of 106-1011 Ω/square, which was suitable for the application without the electrostatic discharge. The optimization of multi-response showed using high amounts of PC and CB was the best mixture of this research.

The objective of this paper is to achieve the minimization of warpage for an injection molded part. The techniques that were implemented to minimize the warpage are the design of experiment (DOE), response surface methodology (RSM), firefly algorithm (FA), and annealing treatment. The packing time, cooling time, and melt temperature were shown to be significant parameters and FA was employed to seek these suitable values by experimental tests based on simulation software Moldex3D and injection machine. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to validate experiments. Annealing treatment process was then applied to reduce more warpage phenomenon; the results showed that warpage phenomenon decreased dramatically compared with popular optimized parameter methodology. Moreover, the residual stress which was obtained by using photoelasticity showed that it has a direct relationship with warpage reduction. Therefore, the best solution of warpage mitigation can be solved by popular optimum process parameters and also annealing treatment.

The objective of this paper was to study and analyze the plastic injection molding parameters to reduce the volume shrinkage of double injection molded part. The specimen was molded with Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) after Polycarbonate was molded as a half part. The weld line occurred at the haft of the molded part. The simulation with Moldex 3D R13 and the design of experiment with Taguchi method was used to perform the experiments and analyze the data to get the optimum of volume shrinkage. The results showed that melt temperature and packing pressure was significant to the volume shrinkage. When using low melt temperature and high packing pressure, the shrinkage was low and related to the thermal expansion of the material. It would be one of the parameters to the design of double injection molding.
