The authors describe the design and implementation of an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) chip. The design is a J-K flip-flop-based counter. With appropriate control circuitry, this chip can function as a multimode counter/divider subsystem. The device was fabricated using a 5-μm p-well polysilicon-gate CMOS process. It is noted that, due to its versatility, this ASIC has many potential applications.

    Integrable Electronically Tunable Current Conveyors

A generalised current conveyor, termed an electronically tunable second-generation current conveyor (ECCII), whose current-transfer ratio can be varied by electronic means, is introduced. A method is proposed for realising ECCII in monolithic integrated form providing both a positive and a negative ECCII in the same circuit. Experimental and simulation results demonstrating the circuit performance are included. Some simple applications which show that their circuit property can be varied by electronic means are also presented. © 1988, The Institution of Electrical Engineers. All rights reserved.

A microstrip waveguide Gunn oscillator is proposed. The oscillator utilizes frequency-selective feedback from the periodic structures created in the microstrip waveguide to the Gunn diode to achieve stable oscillation. An oscillator design by means of an equivalent-circuit model is described. The observed oscillation characteristics of an X-band microstrip waveguide Gunn oscillator are reported. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

A class of filters known as multiple real-pole equal-ripple rational (MRPER) filters has already been proposed. It provides the advantages of third-order block realization or the Cauer type of filter. A design technique is proposed here for a multiple real-root maximally flat (MURROMAF) filter with equiripple stopband. Hence, the filter designer is now provided with a third-order block realization of the inverse Chebyshev type of filter. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Nitrogen mineralization rates of the acidic, xeric soils of the New Jersey Pinelands: Field rates

Using the buried-bag procedure, we quantified nitrogen mineralization rates in the xeric, acidic Lakehurst, and Atsion sands of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Average annual nitrogen yields in the upper 15 cm for the Lakehurst and the Atsion sands were 38.4 and 53.0 kg N/ha, corresponding to 4.5 and 2.5% of the total nitrogen, respectively. Net nitrogen mineralization in both soils exhibited distinct seasonal patterns with maxima in summer and minimum rates in the winter. Nitrification accounted for only 5% of the total N mineralized in both soils. This is consistent with the finding of low populations of autotrophic nitrifiera in these soils. © 1988 The Williams and Wilkins.

Transitional multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole transfer functions for lowpass RC-active filter design

A new class of all-pole multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole transfer functions is described. The function characteristics lie between the maximally flat type and the equiripple type. Hence, they provide a lowpass RC -active filter designer with the freedom to trade between the selectivity of the filter response and the filter sensitivity. © 1988, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In this article, an integrable circuit principle which can be employed to realize both a sinusoidal frequency doubler and a full-wave rectifier is presented. The realization method makes use of a dual translinear characteristic of bipolar junction transistors. Two implementation circuits are proposed and their performance are demonstrated by experimental results. © 1988 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

An alternative scheme for realizing a Full-wave rectifier is described in this note. The realization method uses the inherited class AB complementary stage of a general-purpose operational amplifier (op amp) as a means to perform a rectifier action. Therefore, the rectifier circuits comprise only op amps and resistors. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

    A differential-current electronically-variable current-mirror phase-shifter
    (1988-01-01)

Commercially available discrete current mirrors are used to realize a differential current electronically-variable phase-shifter, capable of operating at high frequencies. The phase-shift is controlled by varying the bias currents, which change the input resistances of the current mirrors, resulting in corresponding changes in the phase angles of the differential currents. The present phase-shifter is also readily cascadable. Experimental results are given and some applications are discussed. © 1988 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
