Item type:Publication, Evaluation of heat transfer performance of a channel mounted with square-wing perforated V-type baffles(2025-01-01) ;Eiamsa-Ard, Smith ;Phila, Arnut ;Thianpong, Chinaruk ;Chuwattanakul, VaresaMaruyama, NaokiThe current study examines the aerothermal performance behaviors of a rectangular-channel with square-wing perforated V-type baffles (SW-PVBs). The SW-PVBs were attached to lower channel walls at five attack angles, θ = 0° (solid V-type baffle), 22.5°, 45°, 67.5° and 90°. The heat transfer and pressure drop results of a channel without SW-PVBs were performed to normalize the results of the SW-PVBs and evaluate thermal performance factors (TPFs). It can be observed that as the attack angles decreased, the heat transfer and pressure loss rose. Among the SW-PVBs that were tested, those characterized by θ = 22.5° exhibited the most significant improvement in heat transfer, whereas SW-PVBs with θ = 45° gave the highest thermal performance factors. Additionally, the SW-PVBs with θ = 45° offered the highest TPF, as high as 1.93. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Convective heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance in a round tube equipped with the modified V-shaped baffle(2018-01-01) ;Boonloi, AmnartJedsadaratanachai, WithadaConvective heat transfer, pressure loss and thermal performance in a heat exchanger tube inserted with the modified V-shaped baffle are investigated numerically. The influences of the flow attack angle (α = 20o, 30o and 45o), baffle height in term of blockage ratio (b/D = BR = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25) and arrangement (The V-tip pointing downstream is called “V-Downstream”, while the V-tip pointing upstream is named “V-Upstream”.) on heat transfer and friction loss are presented for the Reynolds number in range 100 – 1200 (laminar region). The numerical study (finite volume method) is selected to solve the current investigation and to describe the mechanisms inside the heat exchanger tube. The flow visualizations and heat transfer characteristics in the heat exchanger tube are plotted in the numerical-result report. The results on heat transfer, friction factor and thermohydraulic performance of the test tube are compared with the smooth circular tube. It is found that the vortex strength in the heat exchanger tube is an important factor to enhance heat transfer rate and thermal performance. In addition, the maximum thermal enhancement factor is around 3.22 at α = 30o, BR = 0.2, Re = 1200 for V-Upstream arrangement. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effects of baffle reflection and shadow in an integrating sphere on the total luminous flux measurement of a linearly-shaped lamp(2017-12-01) ;Wasapinyokul, Kamol ;Chuwongin, SanthadCharoensook, AjcharaThe measured total luminous flux of a linearly-shaped lamp by using the integrating sphere substitution method against a standard spherical lamp can be deviated from accurate by the presence of a baffle in the sphere. The baffle introduced two main effects on the sphere response: the baffle reflection, or high-signal region, and the baffle shadow, or low-signal region. Once the baffle condition changed, the two effects changed, causing the measured value to change differently regarding the lamp alignment. In a perpendicular alignment, increasing the baffle length increased the measured flux value. This was due to the dramatic increase in the magnitude of the signal in the baffle reflection behind the baffle. In a coaxial alignment, on the contrary, increasing the baffle length resulted in the decrease of the measured flux value. This was due to the increase in the area of the baffle shadow on the opposite hemisphere from the baffle, which increased at a higher ratio than that of the baffle reflection. In both alignments, the measurement uncertainty increased with the baffle length due to the increasing magnitude of the signal fluctuations. The trends were similar for all linearly-shaped test lamps with different lengths and diameters. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Numerical investigation on turbulent forced convection in heating channel inserted with discrete V-shaped baffles(2016-01-01) ;Boonloi, AmnartJedsadaratanachai, WithadaThe numerical examinations on flow visualization, heat transfer characteristic and performance improvement in a square duct inserted with discrete V-shaped baffles (DVB) are reported. The DVB is designed to reduce the pressure loss when compared with the V-shaped baffle. The influences of the flow blockage ratios (b/H, BR = 0.05-0.20), V-tip directions (V-Downstream and V-Upstream) are investigated for Reynolds number, Re = 3000-20,000, with a single pitch ratio and flow attack angle of 1 and 30°, respectively. As the results, the DVB can generate the vortex flow and impinging flow through the test section that assists to develop the thermal efficiency. The augmentations on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are around 2.5-5.75 and 4-22.5 times above the smooth duct, respectively. The best thermal efficiency in forms of thermal enhancement factor, TEF, around 2.32 is detected at Re = 3000, BR = 0.10 and V-Upstream. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal characteristics in turbulent channel flows with V-baffle vortex generators(2014-01-01) ;Kaewkohkiat, Y. ;Jedsadaratanachai, W. ;Eiamsa-Ard, P. ;Promvonge, P.Eiamsa-Ard, S.Experimental work has been performed to examine the effects of V-baffle vortex generators on the heat transfer and friction characteristics in a channel under a constant heat flux boundary condition. In the experiments, V-baffles at different pitch ratios (PR=P/e = 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0) were carried out. Measurements were carried out for a channel of one aspect ratio, AR = W/H = 4.0 and duct height, H= 40 mm with baffle height, e = 8 mm. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 6000 to 22,000. The distributions of temperature and local Nusselt number on bottom channel wall were observed with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. Isothermal friction factors were also taken and presented. The obtained results demonstrate that heat transfer increases with the increase of Reynolds number, whereas friction factor (f) shows the opposite trend. Experimental results also show that the channels with V-baffle at the highest pitch ratio (PR = 8.0) provide highest heat transfer than others. © 2014 Asian Institute of Technology. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal behaviors in a solar air heater channel with arc-shaped baffle turbulators(2014-01-01) ;Koolnapadol, Narin ;Kaewkohkiat, Yingyong ;Promvonge, PongjetEiamsa-Ard, SmithInfluences of arc-shaped baffles turbulators (ASB) on thermal behaviors in a solar air heater channel are studied. In the experiment, the ASB with three pitch ratios (P/e) are placed on the absorber plate (bottom channel wall in this case) to generate stronger turbulence intensity in the channel. The distributions of temperature and local Nusselt number contours in the absorber plate fitted with ASB are observed with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. The results reveal that the heat transfer increases with the decrease in P/e due to longitudinal vortex flow effect. The heat transfer from employing the ASB at P/e = 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 is higher than the smooth channel around 116%, 120% and 127%, respectively. This indicates that the ASB pitch spacing is optimal at 8 times baffle height in the present work. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Influence of triangular wavy baffles on heat and fluid flow characteristics in a channel(2013-07-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Pattanapipat, S.Promvonge, P.Laminar periodic flow and heat transfer in a three-dimensional channel with triangular wavy baffles (TWBs) have been numerically investigated. The baffles with three different angles of attack: 30°, 45° and 60° have been considered for Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 1000. For a better understanding in the heat transfer mechanisms, the pressure contour, secondary flow pattern, streamlines of impinging flow, wall streamline and iso-surface are also reported. Apparently, each wavy baffle generates two counter-rotating vortices. The 30° and 45° baffles generate vortices with comparable intensities which are considerably higher than that caused by 60° baffles. At similar conditions, the 30° and 45° baffles give comparable Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf> values which are considerably higher than that provided by the 60° baffles, but the 30° baffles cause lower f/f <inf>0</inf> than the 45° and 60° baffles. For the range determined, the maximum thermal performances achieved by using baffles with the attack angles of 30°, 45° and 60° are 2.3, 2.2, and 1.88, respectively. © 2013 The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Experimental and numerical study on heat transfer enhancement in a channel with Z-shaped baffles(2012-08-01) ;Sriromreun, Parkpoom ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe influence of baffle turbulators on heat transfer augmentation in a rectangular channel has been investigated experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, the baffles are placed in a zigzag shape (Z-shaped baffle) aligned in series on the isothermal-fluxed top wall, similar to the absorber plate of a solar air heater channel. The aim at using the Z-baffles is to create co-rotating vortex flows having a significant influence on the flow turbulence intensity leading to higher heat transfer enhancement in the tested channel. Effects of the Z-baffle height and pitch spacing length are examined to find the optimum thermal performance for the Reynolds number from 4400 to 20,400. The Z-baffles inclined to 45° relative to the main flow direction are characterized at three baffle- to channel-height ratios (e/. H= 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) and baffle pitch ratios (P/. H= 1.5, 2 and 3). The experimental results show a significant effect of the presence of the Z-baffle on the heat transfer rate and friction loss over the smooth channel with no baffle. The Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance enhancement factor for the in-phase 45° Z-baffles are found to be considerably higher than those for the out-phase 45° Z-baffle at a similar operating condition. The in-phase 45° Z-baffle with larger e/. H provides higher heat transfer and friction loss than the one with smaller e/. H while the shorter pitch length yields the higher Nu, f and TEF than the larger one. The numerical work is also conducted to investigate the flow friction and heat transfer behaviors in the channel mounted with the 45° Z-baffles, and the numerical results are found in good agreement with experimental data. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal behavior of laminar periodic channel flow over triangular baffles(2010-04-01) ;Nivesrangsan, P. ;Sripattanapipat, S. ;Eiamsa-Ard, S.Promvonge, P.Laminar periodic flow and heat transfer in a two dimensional horizontal channel with isothermal walls and with staggered triangular baffles are numerically investigated. The computations are based on the finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm with QUICK scheme is implemented. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 100 to 600. Effects of different baffle tip angles on heat transfer and pressure loss in the channel are studied and the results of the triangular baffle are also compared with those of the flat baffle. It is observed that apart from the rise of Reynolds number, the reduction of the baffle tip angle leads to an increase in the Nusselt number and friction factor. According to the computational results for triangular baffles, the optimum thermal performance is found at the baffle angle of 5°, baffle height to channel height ratio of 0.5 and baffle spacing to channel height ratio of 1.0. In addition, the thermal performances of the 5°-10° triangular baffles are found to be higher than that of the flat baffle for all Reynolds numbers used. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
