This paper presents the design and optimization of a circularly polarized UHF RFID reader antenna. The initial radiator dimensions were set at 130 mm × 130 mm, and the feed position was fine-tuned, with simulations identifying x, y = 24.5, 24.5 mm as the optimal location for impedance matching. Further optimization focused on reducing the ground plane size, with a 170 mm × 170 mm ground plane providing the optimal balance, ensuring an axial ratio below 3 dB and stable |S| (dB) response across the 920-925 MHz frequency band. The final design demonstrated an improved radiation pattern and sufficient gain, making it an effective solution for UHF RFID reader applications.

This research paper deals with the design of a circularly polarized reader antenna with a tennis ball-shaped radiating plate that operates at a frequency range of 860-960 MHz with the center frequency of 910 MHz. In the fabrication of the tennis ball-shaped radiating plate, a small annular-ring slot was first created on a circular radiating plate, followed by two diagonally opposite large arc-shaped annular-ring slots on either edge of the circular radiating plate and then the truncation of the corners of the remaining main element of the plate. A prototype antenna with the final tennis ball-shaped plate was subsequently assembled prior to excitation by the capacitively coupled feed technique to enhance |S11| bandwidth. The prototype antenna could achieve an average gain of 6.18 dBic, |S11| covering the frequency range of 837.6-966.2 MHz, and the circular polarization of 850.6-963.5 MHz, making it suitable for universal UHF RFID applications. In addition, simulations were carried out using CST Microwave Studio for comparison with the experimental results.

This research proposes a simple economical broadband circularly polarized antenna for universal ultra-high frequency (UHF) RF identification (RFID) readers. The antenna utilizes a folded plate, a two-corner truncated parasitic patch, and a ground plane. The folded plate, which is fabricated from one single plate, consists of a two-corner truncated main patch, a wall patch, and a feed line, where the main patch is perpendicular to the wall patch, which is in turn perpendicular to the feed line. The folded plate enables currents to flow with a phase difference. The simulation results achieved an |S<inf>11</inf>| < −15 dB of 805–966 MHz (18% bandwidth), a 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 834–962 MHz (14% AR bandwidth), and a gain higher than 8.6 dBic. The measured results obtained an |S<inf>11</inf>| < −15 dB of 806–970 MHz (18%), a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 816–963 MHz (16%), and a gain greater than 7.8 dBic. The proposed antenna is applicable for universal UHF RFID readers as it covers the entire operating UHF RFID frequency range of 840–960 MHz. The parametric study and evolution of the proposed antenna are detailed in this research paper as well. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE 26:575–587, 2016.

This research is concerned with a multiple loop antenna applicable to near field ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID). The proposed multi-loop antenna is configured to induce the robust and even magnetic field distributions in the H<inf>x</inf>, H<inf>y</inf>, and H<inf>z</inf> orientations so as to achieve the enhanced readability performances in all directions (i.e., x, y, and z). Simulations were carried out using CST Microwave Studio to determine the impedance bandwidth (|S<inf>11</inf>|<−10 dB) in the frequency range of 920–925 MHz (i.e., Thailand's UHF RFID standard) and to investigate the H<inf>x</inf>-, H<inf>y</inf>-, and H<inf>z</inf>-oriented magnetic field distributions. A prototype antenna of 14 cm × 16 cm × 0.6 mm (W × L × H) in overall dimension was subsequently fabricated on an FR4 substrate connected to a coaxial cable. In this research, the H<inf>x</inf>-, H<inf>y</inf>-, and H<inf>z</inf>-oriented magnetic field distributions of the prototype antenna were measured in the x-axis, y-axis, and x–y plane and are in good agreement with the simulation results. The measured readability performances in the x-, y-, and z-directions in which seven near field UHF RFID tags were deployed unobstructed (i.e., in open air) are respectively 25.27%, 31.73%, and 85.43%. Furthermore, the performances on the antenna readability with the tags attached to the microcentrifuge tubes are 30.55%, 25.90%, and 69.09% for the x-, y-, and z-directions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: This research has proposed a modified uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) for radiation to investigate the radiation pattern on the coated metallic curved surface. The modified UTD, which accounts for the existence of the impedance surface (coating), is applied to the development of a compact UHF RFID passive tag antenna with a two-pronged fork slot to be mounted on the coated metallic cylindrical drum. In the calculation, the UHF RFID tag was initially represented by electric tangential (E<inf>z</inf>-source) and equivalent magnetic tangential to the surface (M<inf>z</inf>-source). The results indicated that the M<inf>z</inf>-source could achieve a greater communication area, and thus the design of the tag antenna is of equivalent magnetic source. Simulations were then carried out to determine the optimal antenna parameters, and an antenna prototype was fabricated and tested. The simulation and measured results are in agreement. The research findings validate the effectiveness of the modified UTD-based UHF RFID tag for application on the coated metallic curved surface.

This article presents a circularly polarized (CP) flat antenna with truncated corners using the capacitively coupled feed technique for UHF RFID applications. A radiating plate, an air gap and a ground plane constitute the antenna. The reverse-arc shape truncated corners are utilized to generate a CP radiation and the suspended structure antenna using the capacitively coupled feed technique is adopted to enhance bandwidth. A prototype antenna was fabricated and its measured results were 13% for the bandwidth and 11.54% for the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The half-power beamwidths of the left hand circular polarization on x-y and x-z planes were both greater than. The measured gain on the UHF RFID system was greater than 5.90 dBic.

This paper presents a low profile planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for the sensing tag of UHF RFID applications. The proposed antenna that is optimized by using the multi-slotted PIFA in order to overcome the shortcoming of a narrow bandwidth of a typical PIFA can be increased of 9.2%. The |S11| of the simulated and measured results can be operated in the UHF RFID system in Thailand, which covers the frequency bands from 920 to 925 MHz. Furthermore, the radiation pattern is omnidirectional at 922.5 MHz. Therefore, slotted PIFA can be employed with a UHF RFID sensing tag.

This paper proposes the tag antenna designed to operate along the frequency band of 902-928 MHz corresponding to UHF RFID in Thailand and FCC standards. The tag antenna was fabricated from the thin FR4 substrate with the dielectric constant of 4.3 and the thickness of 1.5 mm. The radiation pattern of the tag antenna is omni-directional beam. The tag antenna is designed by using H-slot matching technique for impedance matching between the antenna and IC chip with the impedance of 16.01-j150.02 at the frequency of 915 MHz that is the center frequency of FCC standard. The structure of the tag antenna is durable and suitable for applying with pallet applications.
