Item type:Publication, Power swing and voltage stabilization by PV generator with active and reactive power controls(2017-07-13) ;Pothisoonthorn, Sukanya ;Ngamroo, IssarachaiKunakorn, AnantawatUndamped power and voltage swings of synchronous generators due to severe disturbances may make power systems unstable. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a control scheme of active and reactive power outputs of a photovoltaic (PV) generator equipped with power oscillation dampers (PODs). The PODs with second-order lead/lag structure are installed in the active and reactive power control loops of the PV. The POD parameters in both control loops are simultaneously optimized so that the power and voltage swings are minimized. Solving the optimization problem by the particle swarm optimization, the optimal parameters of PODs can be automatically achieved. Simulation study demonstrates that the stabilizing performance of the PV with the optimal POD is superior to that of the PV with the non-optimal POD against various power flow levels and severe faults. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Active power modulation control of hybrid PV generator-battery for power swing stabilization(2016-09-06) ;Pothisoonthorn, SukanyaNgamroo, IssarachaiThis paper proposes the active power modulation control scheme of the hybrid photovoltaic (PV) generator and battery for power swing stabilization. The battery which is connected to the DC link of the PV generator, is used to smooth the output power fluctuation of the PV generator during normal operation. During faults, the stored energy of battery can be used for the active power output modulation control of the PV generator to stabilize the power swing. By equipping the power oscillation damper (POD) at the active power controller of the PV inverter, the active power output can be modulated to damp the power swing. The POD structure is a practical second-order lead/lag compensator with single input signal. Simulation study confirms the stabilizing effect of the PV with POD. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Two-level robust coordinated stabilizing control of PSS and DFIG wind turbine for enhancing grid resiliency(2016-08-10) ;Surinkaew, TossapornNgamroo, IssarachaiUnder the disruption of communication system, the wide area controller may fail to stabilize power oscillations. As a result, the power grids may be jeopardized due to the undamped oscillations. To improve the grid resiliency, a new design method of the two-level robust coordinated stabilizing control of power oscillation damper (POD) of wind turbine with doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), and power system stabilizer (PSS) is presented in this paper. The two-level control of POD and PSS consists of centralized and local levels. As the main controllers, the centralized POD and PSS are applied to damp out power oscillations. When the communication failure occurs, the local POD and PSS act as the backup controllers to stabilize power oscillations instead of the centralized POD and PSS. The geometric measures of controllability and observability are adopted to determine the suitable input signals of POD and PSS. The structure of POD and PSS is represented by a practical 2nd-order lead/lag compensator. The control parameters of POD and PSS of each control level are separately optimized under various operating conditions so that the damping effect and robustness can be guaranteed. Simulation study is conducted to show the stabilizing effect of the proposed controller on the enhancement of grid resiliency against severe short circuits, line outages, various power flow levels, wind speeds, variable communication latency, and communication failure. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Coordinated control of DFIG wind turbine and SVC for robust power system stabilization(2015-08-17) ;Uong, SothyNgamroo, IssarachaiIn this paper, a coordinated control of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine and static var compensator (SVC) is proposed for the robust stabilization of interconnected power system. By modulating the reactive power output of DFIG and SVC, the power oscillation can be damped. To implement this control, the power oscillation damper (POD) with the 2nd-order lead-lag compensator is added to the voltage controller of DFIG and SVC. The mixed H<inf>2</inf>/H<inf>∞</inf> control method is adopted to formulate the parameters optimization problem of POD. Solving the problem by an improved backtracking search algorithm (BSA), the optimal parameters of POD can be achieved. Simulation results in the two-area four-machine power system confirm the robustness and damping effect of the proposed coordinated control. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Optimization of robust power oscillation dampers for DFIG wind turbines considering N-1 outage contingencies(2015-01-30) ;Ngamroo, IssarachaiSurinkaew, TossapornThis paper focuses on a new optimization technique of robust power oscillation damper (POD) for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbines considering N-1 outage contingencies. The POD with 2nd-order lead/lag compensator and local input signal is placed with the voltage controller of DFIG so that the reactive power output can be modulated to damp out power oscillations. The optimization of POD parameters is formulated based on a mixed H<inf>2</inf>/H<inf>∞</inf> control, and carried out under all system outage events such as line tripping, and load/generation shedding etc. The firefly algorithm is employed to obtain the optimal parameters of POD. Simulation study in an IEEE 9 bus system reveals that the proposed robust POD provides superior damping effect than the conventional POD against various system contingencies and uncertainties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Robust stabilization of multimachine power system by DFIG wind turbine equipped with power oscillation damper(2014-10-15) ;Surinkaew, TossapornNgamroo, IssarachaiVarious system uncertainties and disturbances may cause the power system instability. The power system stabilizing controller designed without taking such uncertainties into account may not tolerate and fail to operate. This paper aim at the new robust control design of power oscillation damper (POD) equipped with the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine. Without difficulty of mathematic modeling, the inverse output multiplicative perturbation is used to represent system uncertainties. The structure of POD is specified as a practical 2nd-order lead/lag compensator with single input. The POD parameters optimization problem is formulated considering the variation of tie-line power flows. The POD parameters are automatically tuned by firefly algorithm so that the damping performance and robustness can be achieved. Simulation results in IEEE 9 bus test system ensure that the proposed robust POD is superior to the conventional POD in terms of the damping performance and robustness. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Robust decentralized power oscillation dampers design of DFIG wind turbines for stabilization of inter-area oscillation(2014-01-01) ;Surinkaew, TossapornNgamroo, IssarachaiA new decentralized power oscillation dampers (POD) design of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbines for damping of inter-area oscillation is presented in this paper. The practical 2nd-order lead/lag compensator with single input signal is used for the POD structure. The POD is equipped with the voltage controller of rotor side converter of DFIG. With the damping signal from POD, the reactive power output of DFIG can be modulated to damp out the oscillations. The parameters optimization of decentralized PODs is conducted over a wide range of tie-line power flow levels so that the damping performance of PODs can be enhanced. The improved firefly algorithm is used to achieve the optimal POD parameters automatically. Study results in a two-area four-machine interconnected system show that the stabilizing effect of proposed decentralized POD is higher than the conventional POD under severe faults, heavy power flows, and wind speeds. © 2014 IEEE.
