    A knowledge base to assist a heuristic search approach to facility layout

    This paper presents a construction model for facility layout. An artificial intelligence technique has been used to solve the problems of allocating patterns within a layout. The designed system consists of pattern allocation, a heuristic search and a knowledge base system. The system first generates alternative layouts by using a pattern allocation. The heuristic search searches for the best layout from these generated alternatives. The heuristic function, or closeness weight, is also used for directing the search process to the most profitable choice of layout by acquiring knowledge from the knowledge base. An experimental system is constructed for testing purposes only. The results from the system show potential for solving complex facility layout problems. © 1994 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Multiple-real-pole and multiple-critical-pole maximally flat RC active lowpass filters with sharp cut-off

    Recently, an attempt has been made to design a multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole maximally flat RC-active filter with sharp cut-off by including a multiple pair of concident jω-axis zeros (Wei and Chien 1985). This design technique unfortunately has two major drawbacks, i.e. (i) the passband response does not truly satisfy the maximally flat criterion with a consequent large deviation from the desired no-loss response and (ii) there is a limitation on the realizable number of third-order blocks with finite transmission zeros. A new design technique is therefore proposed here whereby all the aforementioned undesirable features are eliminated. The technique is also extended to cover the case of prescribed finite transmission zeros. Hence, this new technique offers a multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole maximally flat lowpass RC-active filter with a sharp cut-off and also effective suppression of noise at prescribed frequencies. © 1991 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

    Design of MURROMAF filters with equiripple stopband attenuation

    A class of filters known as multiple real-pole equal-ripple rational (MRPER) filters has already been proposed. It provides the advantages of third-order block realization or the Cauer type of filter. A design technique is proposed here for a multiple real-root maximally flat (MURROMAF) filter with equiripple stopband. Hence, the filter designer is now provided with a third-order block realization of the inverse Chebyshev type of filter. © 1989 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

    Transitional multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole transfer functions for lowpass RC-active filter design

    A new class of all-pole multiple-real-pole/multiple-critical-pole transfer functions is described. The function characteristics lie between the maximally flat type and the equiripple type. Hence, they provide a lowpass RC -active filter designer with the freedom to trade between the selectivity of the filter response and the filter sensitivity. © 1988, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Recursive Digital Filters With Predetermined Group Delay And Chebyshev Stopband Attenuation

    Recently, a conformal mapping technique has been described whereby the transfer function of a recursive digital filter with prescribed group delay and Chebyshev stopband can be obtained in such a way that the numerator and denominator polynomials are different in order. It is shown here that such a transfer function can also be determined using the familiar bilinear transformation and the well known method in the s-domain.     A Maximally Flat Design of RC-Active Low-Pass Filters with Sharp Cutoff by Cascading Third-Order Blocks

    A design technique for a multiple real root maximally flat (MURROMAF) with coincident pairs of transmission zeros is described. In comparison with previous reports, the technique offers two main advantages. First, the passband magnitude responses show no distortion with respect to the maximally flat criterion. Secondly, there is more freedom on the choices of the real pole multiplicity and the number of coincident pairs of the transmission zeros as long as the realizability condition is observed. © 1986 IEEE

    A design technique for a class of all-pole transfer functions with multiple real poles and multiple critical poles and equiripple passband magnitude response is described. It is seen as an alternative design which is mathematically simpler than the generalized method previously proposed [8]. it is useful for the designer who is more familiar with the simultaneous linear equations than the optimization using linear programming. © 1986 IEEE.

    A maximally flat RC active filter with sharp cutoff can be achieved by including single or multiple pairs of coincident transmission zeros but at the expense of high Q-factor of the critical pole pair. A novel design technique is proposed here to reduce the Q-factor of such filters by increasing the multiplicity of the critical pole pairs.     A new counting and direction-sensing circuit which produces twice as many counting pulses as that of an earlier design is described. It offers two alternative advantages, i.e., it may be regarded as doubling the accuracy of displacement measurement or relaxing the stringent resolution requirement of a transducer, such as the Moire transducer, by half.     Transition between a flat magnitude and a sharp cut-off lowpass filter

    A Butterworth lowpass filter provides excellent flatness around ω = 0 but the cut-off rate is low. Recently improvements to the cut-off rate have been made by introducing one ripple near the band edge. This paper offers a generalized design technique such that any degree of trade-offs between flat magnitude around ω = 0 and sharp cut-off at the band edge can be obtained while keeping the ratio of the reflected power to the transmitted power at minimum. © 1979 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
