    Changes in Pulse Transit Time during Psychological Stress Test

    Preliminary study of psychological stress on physiological parameters has been reported. Six healthy college students (male=3, female=3) participated in the modified Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Their Electrocardiogram (ECG), Photoplethysmogram (PPG) were monitored in 5-stage experiment. Two Pulse Transit Time (PTT) were generated within each cardiac cycle from the period of R-wave presented in ECG to (1) the peak (systolic pressure) in PPG; 'PTT+' and (2) the valley (diastolic pressure) in PPG; 'PTT-'. The mean and standard deviation of these two PTTs were reported across the stages. More data will be recruited for statistical comparison in the future.

    Rapid E. coli detection based on fluorescence technique

    This research focuses on developing a prototype tool that is portable and develop method to detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) in water by measuring the light of fluorescence from an enzymatic reaction. The procedure can be done easily without need for laboratory professionals within 2 hours. Total coliforms can measure a minimum of at least 10 MPN/mL. This method is an alternative method to determine water quality. It can reduce the shipping water samples step to laboratories, reducing the time to wait for results. And reduces the cost of detecting E. coli, while the efficiency of this method is no different with the Most Probable Number method.

    Brainwave spectrum analysis during paced breathing control: A pilot study

    Investigation of Electroencephalogram (EEG) has been made during the spontaneous breathing and paced breathing control (9 breaths/minute) conditions in eight young healthy college students (Male=4, Female=4). Their selected 5-minute EEG segments were transformed into 3 frequency bands (Delta Wave: 0.5-4Hz, Theta Wave: 4-8Hz and Alpha Wave: 8-13Hz). The power in each band were compared between two conditions. Our statistical tests show no significant differences between the two conditions in all three spectrums. This pilot study needs to be further analyzed to make a firm conclusion and a larger sample size is suggested.

    A development of real-Time fetal movement detector

    Fetal Movement (FM) is a marker for evaluating wellbeing of the unborn baby. Naturally, pregnant women can sense any movement in her abdomen. However, there are two groups of women who may have degraded this sensing ability. A primigravida, a first time pregnant woman, may not be able to recognize the fetus movement. A working pregnant woman may be too busy to aware of her fetus responses. In this paper, a development of real-Time fetus movement detector is presented. An air pressurized bag is designed to be wrapped around the abdomen of pregnant woman. It is connected to a pressure sensor in order to detect the force exerted against the uterus wall in any direction. The signal is processed before uploaded into internet cloud services for real-Time monitoring and remote access.

    Analysis of Heart Rate Variability and Breath to Breath Interval in frequency domain

    Respiratory is known to be a confounding factor of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis. This article introduces a Breath-to-Breath Interval (BBI) spectral computation to investigate the insight between respiration and the HRV. Six males and five female volunteers (age 20-25 years) underwent the Electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory chest movement recordings for 5 minutes while sitting in resting condition. Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) model was employed to the R-wave to R-wave interval (RRI) and BBI signals for the spectral analysis. The results from all participants demonstrate that the peak amplitude in high frequency (0.15-0.40 Hz) band are higher than the ones in low frequency (0.04-0.15 Hz) band in both RRI and BBI frequency plots. It suggests that respiratory plays a major role in HRV oscillation. Our further study is to develop a mathematical model to explain this finding.

    Continuous non-invasive blood pressure monitoring based on applanation tonometry

    The clinical demand for a device to continuous monitor blood pressure is on the increase to obtain diagnostic intensive information of the cardiovascular patients. The gold standard for continuous monitoring is invasive, direct method performed by inserting a catheter into the arteries. This article presents development of a low cost, non-invasive continuous blood pressure transducer based on applanation tonometry measured at external surface of the wrist. Preliminary testing with the blood pressure simulator has shown that the signal obtained from reported transducer visually correlated to the catheter type. Moreover applied to the healthy volunteers, continuation and consistent waveforms were also obtained. © 2014 IEEE.

    A design of configurable ECG recorder module

    A modular design of Electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition system is presented. As a crucial part of the system, the Front-End module is made of a programmable, mixed-signal Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). This module is designed to satisfy the various forms of bioelectrical measurement with no hardware modification. Controlled by a 32-bit microcontroller, the prototype module recorded the simulated signal in two different standard ECG recording configurations, ten and six electrodes placements. Our study shows a good performance signal recording and the module is open to further developed. © 2011 IEEE.

    An insole point pressure monitoring system

    Number of people who is suffering with plantar is increasing nowadays. Several causes such as diabetes mellitus, plantar fasciitis, changes in biomechanics, etc. may be diagnosed. Simple treatment, by an expert clinician, is such as inserting a custom-made insole into the patient's shoes for manipulating pressure to the right position. This work aims to develop plantar point pressure measurement, which is able to quantitatively estimate the total plantar point pressure in real-time. Based on piezoresistive sensor, pressure at the point of interest between before and after make custom insole could be determined. According to the preliminary test, the system is able to measure total plantar point pressure and give instant feedback to a user in real-time. © 2011 IEEE.

    Signal processing for heart rate variability analysis case study: Ventricular tachycardia condition

    This article explains the signal processing of the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data analysis on both temporal and spectral domains. Downloaded information of 35 Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) records, the Electrocardiogram (ECG) was step by step converted into autonomic quantitative measures. The overall process included R-wave detection, R-R interval (RRI) construction and time-to-frequency domain data transformation. Our study revealed that two short-term statistical indices are linearly decreasing immediately prior to the VT onset. This suggests that HRV analysis may be used to predict the VT occurrence. The future work is to recruit more local subjects in Thailand and analyze the long-term data prior the VT events. © 2011 IEEE.

    Automatic control for oxygen intake via nasal cannula

    In the present, oxygen supplying using nasal cannula is the first aide for a patient who has the problems in respiratory system by example in a newborn baby in which the incompetence of respiratory system on early days of birth is concerned. An indicator of this kind of symptom is physiological Jaundice, yellowish discoloration of the skin. Direct oxygen intake is a usual caretaking for this group of patients. Basically manual valve control of feeding oxygen by caretaker is a treatment by using pulse oximetry value as monitoring of effectiveness. This treatment is either time or labor consuming in a corona care unit. The purpose of this research is to develop an automatic control for oxygen intake. By studying the mechanism of arterial oxygen saturation in blood (SaO<inf>2</inf>) under the partial pressure of feeding oxygen (PiO <inf>2</inf>), the effective model can be applied as control value of oxygen for this group of patient.
