Item type:Item, Performance of a heat exchanger with compound inclined circular-rings and twisted tapes(2022-09-01) ;Pimsarn, M. ;Samruaisin, P. ;Thianpong, C. ;Ruengpayungsak, K.Eiamsa-Ard, P.Optimization was done of the aerothermal performance factor (η) of a tube into which a combination of inclined circular-rings (ICRs) and twisted-tapes (TTs) were installed. The key contribution of this research is determination of the appropriate ICR and TT sizes to produce the best heat exchanger performance. An ICR's purpose is to produce counter-rotating vortices, whereas the TT's role is to create swirl flow within a tube to improve turbulence and transfer cold fluid from the core region to the heated-wall zone. The influence of circular-ring inclination angle (α = 30o, 45o, 60o and 90o), number of twisted tapes (H = 2, 4, and 6) and twist ratios (TR = 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0) on heat transfer and pressure losses were assessed to determine an optimum η condition. The heat transfer and friction factor tend to increase with H values and decreasing TR. The heat transfer of ICRs together with TTs is higher than in a plain tube by up to 128.7% and 155.3%, respectively, while it is better than the transverse circular-ring (α = 90o) and twisted-tape by up to 116.9% and 146.5%, respectively. Furthermore, due to moderate heat transfer and low pressure losses, a maximal η of 1.66 was achieved for α = 30o, H = 2 and TR = 3.0 within the examined range. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Characterization of heat transfer and artificial neural networks prediction on overall performance index of a channel installed with arc-shaped baffle turbulators(2021-08-01) ;Promvonge, P. ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Chuwattanakul, V.Samruaisin, P.Influences of baffle pitch ratio (p/w) and attached angle of arc-shaped baffles (AB) on the overall performance index (OPI) of a channel installed with AB have been carefully studied. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the OPI of the channel was reported. The arc-shaped baffle (AB) showed a significant effect on the augmented heat transfer and friction loss penalty as compared to a smooth channel. As the attached arc shaped angle (θ) increased, both Nusselt number and friction factor intensified. The Nusselt number values at θ = 90° were higher than those at θ = 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80° by up to 5.8%, 3.9%, 2.3% and 2.5%, respectively. The Nusselt number increased when the p/w was raised from 4.0 to 8.0 while the opposite trend was observed when the p/w was raised from 8.0 to 12.0. The maximum OPI of 1.43 was achieved by using the baffles with θ = 90° and pitch ratio of 8.0 at Re = 4000. For the development of ANN models for predicting the OPI, it was found that the best predictive performance was (R2) of 0.99843407 for ANN model of 3-50-50-1 with Tanh-Tanh activation function at epoch of 1200. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, A case study on thermal performance assessment of a heat exchanger tube equipped with regularly-spaced twisted tapes as swirl generators(2014-01-01) ;Eiamsa-Ard, P. ;Piriyarungroj, N. ;Thianpong, C.Eiamsa-Ard, S.Effects of the regularly-spaced twisted tape (RS-TT) on the heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance factor behaviors in a heat exchanger are reported along with those of a full length twisted tape. The full length (or typical) twisted tapes with two different twist ratios (y=P/W = 6.0 and 8.0), and the regularly-spaced twisted tape (RS-TT) with two different twist ratios (y=6.0 and 8.0) and three free space ratios (s=S/P = 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0) were employed for comparative study. The article also presents the application of a mathematical model for numerical simulation of the swirling flow in a tube induced by regularly-spaced twisted tape (RS-TT) insertion. The numerical simulation was performed in order to gain an understanding of physical behavior of the fluid flow (decaying swirling flow field), fluid temperature and local Nusselt number characteristics of a tube fitted with RS-TT in the turbulent flow regime. The Navier-Stokes equation in common with the energy equation was solved using the SIMPLE technique with the RNG k-ε turbulence model. The experimental results show that heat transfer rate and friction increased with decreasing twist ratio and space ratio. At similar conditions, full length twisted tapes (s=0) offered higher heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal performance factor than RS-TT ones (s = 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) as they induced more consistent swirling flows and thus turbulence. This reveals that it is possible to gain promising tradeoff between enhanced heat transfer and increased friction by selecting the twisted tape with proper geometries. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Thermal characteristics in turbulent channel flows with V-baffle vortex generators(2014-01-01) ;Kaewkohkiat, Y. ;Jedsadaratanachai, W. ;Eiamsa-Ard, P. ;Promvonge, P.Eiamsa-Ard, S.Experimental work has been performed to examine the effects of V-baffle vortex generators on the heat transfer and friction characteristics in a channel under a constant heat flux boundary condition. In the experiments, V-baffles at different pitch ratios (PR=P/e = 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0) were carried out. Measurements were carried out for a channel of one aspect ratio, AR = W/H = 4.0 and duct height, H= 40 mm with baffle height, e = 8 mm. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 6000 to 22,000. The distributions of temperature and local Nusselt number on bottom channel wall were observed with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. Isothermal friction factors were also taken and presented. The obtained results demonstrate that heat transfer increases with the increase of Reynolds number, whereas friction factor (f) shows the opposite trend. Experimental results also show that the channels with V-baffle at the highest pitch ratio (PR = 8.0) provide highest heat transfer than others. © 2014 Asian Institute of Technology. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Turbulent heat transfer through a heat exchanger with porous twisted tape inserts(2009-01-01) ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Rattanawong, S. ;Eiamsa-Ard, P.Pimsarn, M.In this present work, the influences of the porous twisted tape (PT) on the heat transfer and the pressure loss are studied experimentally. The comparative experiments are conducted in the tube fitted with the PT or typical twisted tape (TT) at different twist ratios, y/w = 4.0 and 5.0, in the Reynolds number ranging from 4800 to 16,000 under uniform heat flux conditions. In the experiments, the PT inserts generate swirls that modify the near wall velocity profile resulted in improvement of the heat transfer rate. The experimental results reveal that the heat transfer rates increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w) for all twisted tapes used in the experiments. The heat transfer rates increase up to 71% with the help of the PT. The increases in average Nusselt numbers of using PT and TT are found to be 48% and 22%, respectively, over those of the corresponding plain tube. However, PT causes a considerable increase in friction factor. The mean increases of friction factors for PT and TT are respectively, about 3.14 and 2.45 times in comparison with that for the plain tube. Mean friction factor and Nusselt number for PT, are respectively 28% and 21% higher than those for TT. In addition, the empirical correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor are also reported.
