This study examines the influences of U-cut twisted tapes (U-TTs) on thermal-hydraulic behaviors in a circular tube with uniform heat flux. The geometric parameters studied include six U-cut ratios (s/t = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0) and two twist ratios (y/w = 3.5 and 4.0). Experimental results revealed that their U-cut ratios highly influenced heat transfer enhancement. U-TTs with U-cut ratios (s/t) of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 achieved higher Nusselt numbers than conventional twisted tapes (TTs). In contrast, U-TTs with larger U-cut ratios (s/t = 2.5 and 3.0) showed reduced Nusselt numbers. However, friction losses with all U-TTs were consistently higher than those with TTs. Due to their excellent heat transfer enhancement, U-TTs with s/t ratios of 0.5 and 1.0 exhibited significantly higher thermal performance factors (TPF) than conventional TTs. The highest TPF, 1.28, was achieved by U-TTs with an s/t ratio of 0.5 and a y/w of 3.5 at a Reynolds number of 6000.

The influences of sparsely placed twisted tapes installed with multiple-transverse twisted-baffles on heat transfer and thermal enhancement factor characteristics of tubes were experimentally studied. The tests were performed using sparsely placed twisted tapes with a twist ratio (y/W) of 3.0, a tape width (W) of 60 mm and a space width-to-tape width ratio (S/W) of 0.8. Each twisted tape was installed with multiple-transverse twisted-baffles. The study encompassed multiple-transverse twisted-baffles with four twist ratios (s/w) of 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 and five width ratios (w/W) of 0.10, 0.13, 0.16, 0.19 and 0.22. A typical twisted tape was also tested for assessment. The results showed that twisted tapes installed with transverse twisted-baffles gave higher heat transfer rates, friction factors and thermal enhancement factors (η) than a typical twisted tape. This is attributed to the combined actions of swirl flow caused by the twisted tape inserts and an additional flow disturbance caused by the multiple-transverse twisted-baffles. For the tube with compound devices, the heat transfer rate, friction loss and thermal enhancement factor increased with increasing s/w and w/W of multiple-transverse twisted-baffles. The tube with sparsely placed twisted tapes installed with multiple-transverse twisted-baffles yielded the highest thermal enhancement factor of 1.32.

CuO/water nanofluids were applied in swirling impinging jets for heat transfer enhancement. Swirling flow was induced by twisted tape inserts with twist ratios (y/w) of 1.43, 2.86 and 4.28. Impinging jets were injected at three different ratios of jet-to-plate spacing to nozzle diameter (H/d) of 2, 3 and 4. Nanofluids with CuO concentrations of 2.0%, 3.0% and 4.0% by volume were comparatively tested with water (a base fluid) for Reynolds numbers ranging from 1600 to 9400. Experimental results reveal that the nanofluids with concentrations of 2.0 and 3.0% by volume yield higher Nusselt numbers than the base fluid while the one with concentration of 4.0% shows opposite result. At the ratio of jet-to-plate spacing/nozzle diameter (H/d) of 2, Nusselt number slightly increases with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). However, at the ratios of jet-to-plate spacing/nozzle diameter (H/d) of 3 and 4, Nusselt number increases with increasing twist ratio. Over the studied range, the optimum condition is found at H/d = 2, y/w = 1.43, and nanofluid concentration of 2.0% by volume.

The turbulent forced convective heat transfer behaviors in a tube inserted with baffle turbulators (typical straight baffles, straight cross-baffles, straight alternate-baffles, twisted-baffles, alternate twisted-baffles, and twisted cross-baffles) have been experimentally and numerically investigated. The influence of pitch ratio (P/D) from 1.0 to 2.0 and Reynolds numbers (Re) from 6000 to 20,000 are also reported. Among the studied turbulators, the twisted cross-baffles gave the highest heat transfer enhancement and thermal enhancement factor while the straight cross-baffles gave the lowest heat transfer rate and thermal enhancement factor. The twisted-baffles, alternate twisted-baffles, and twisted cross-baffles created high longitudinal vortex/swirl around the tube core. The strongest longitudinal vortex/swirl was achieved by the use of twisted cross-baffles. The recirculation flows were found in the tube fitted with straight baffles (a recirculation flow), straight alternate-baffles (double recirculation flows) and straight cross-baffles (quadruple recirculation flows). The heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor increased with decreasing pitch ratio (P/D) and increasing Reynolds number (Re). At the optimum condition of the smallest pitch ratio (P/D = 1.0) and the lowest Reynolds number (Re = 6000), the twisted cross-baffles offered the highest thermal enhancement factor of 1.7.

An experimental work has been carried out to study the heat transfer of swirling impinging jets (SIJs) with TiO<inf>2</inf>-water nanofluids using thermochromic liquid crystal technique. Experiments were carried out at constant jet-to-target spacing ratio (L/D) of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 for Reynolds numbers from 5000 to 20,000 by using nanofluids with TiO<inf>2</inf>concentrations of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% by volume, twisted tapes with twist ratios (y/W) of 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0. Conventional impinging jets (CIJs) and swirling impinging jets (SIJs) with pure water were also tested, for comparison. At similar operation conditions, swirling impinging jets (SIJs) offer superior heat transfer to conventional impinging jets. It is also found that the nanofluids with concentrations of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% by volume give higher Nusselt numbers than the base fluid (water) while the one with concentration of 2.5% shows opposite result. Over the studied range, the optimum condition where the maximum Nusselt number is achieved at TiO<inf>2</inf>-water nanofluids with concentration of 2.0% by volume and y/W = 6.0.

In the present article, heat transfer enhancement by three-start spirally twisted tube combination with triple-channel twisted tape is studied numerically using RNG k-ε turbulence model. Influences of the tape width ratio (w/D = 0.1, 0.25, 0.34 and 0.5) and tube/tape arrangement (belly-to-belly and belly-to-neck arrangements) are described. The numerical results of a twisted tube without tape and a circular plain tube are also given for comparison. The results are reported in terms of velocity field, temperature field, turbulent kinetic energy, local Nusselt number distribution, average Nusselt number, pressure loss and thermal performance factor. It is found that heat transfer and friction factor increase with tape width ratio. At a given tape width, the systems in belly-to-neck arrangement are more efficient for heat transfer enhancement than the ones in belly-to-belly arrangement. The three-start spirally twisted tubes with twisted tapes in belly-to-neck arrangement at w/D = 0.1, 0.25 and 0.34 give higher Nusselt numbers than the twisted tube without tape up to 1.2%, 21% and 36%, respectively. The twisted tubes with triple-channel twisted tape in belly-to-belly arrangement provide higher Nusselt numbers than the twisted tube without tape up to 1.23%, 6.7%, 10% and 17%, respectively. The superior heat transfer of the combined devices in belly-to-neck arrangement (especially at large w/D) is attributed to the stronger interaction between the swirling flows induced by the tubes and those induced by the tapes. Moreover, the systems in belly-to-neck arrangement cause lower friction loss than the ones in belly-to-belly arrangement. Thus, the systems in belly-to-neck arrangement yield higher thermal performance factors. Among the studied cases, the twisted tube combined with triple-channel twisted tape in belly-to-neck arrangement at w/D = 0.34 possesses the maximum thermal performance of 1.32 at Reynolds number of 5000.

The effects of the twisted tapes consisting of centre wings and alternate-axes (WT-A) on thermohydraulic properties in a round tube, were investigated. The effects of other three types of twisted tapes including: (1) the twisted tape with wings alone (WT), (2) the twisted tape with alternate axes alone (T-A), and (3) the typical twisted tape (TT), were also studied for comparison. All twisted tapes used were twisted at constant twist length (y) of 57. mm, corresponding to a constant twist ratio (y/. W) of 3.0. The wings were generated along the centre line of the tape with three different angles of attack, (β= 43°, 53° and 74°). Test runs were conducted using water as a testing fluid with Reynolds number range between 5200 and 22,000. Under the similar condition, the heat transfer rate in the tube fitted with the WT-A was consistently higher than those in the tube equipped the WT, T-A and plain tube. It is also found that the heat transfer rate increased with increasing angle of attack. Over the range studied, the use of WT-A at β= 74° was found to be the most effective for heat transfer enhancement, giving thermal performance factor of up to 1.4. Mean values of Nusselt number (Nu), friction factor (f), thermal performance factor (η) provided by the WT-A (at β= 74°) were respectively, 17.7%, 30.6% and 7.8% higher than those in the tube with WT (at β= 74°), 20.8%, 53% and 4.9% higher than those in the tube with T-A, and 62%, 123% and 24% higher than those in the tube with TT. The superior performance of the WT-A over those of the other tapes could be attributed to the combined effects of the following actions: (1) a common swirling flow by the twisted tape (2) a vortex generated by the wing (3) a strong collision of the recombined streams behind each alternate point. For a better understanding on flow phenomena, flow-visualization by smoke wire technique is also presented. In addition, the experimental correlations of Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor were also developed. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

In this paper, heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance behaviors in a tube equipped with the combined devices between the twisted tape (TT) and constant/periodically varying wire coil pitch ratio are experimentally investigated. The periodically varying three coil pitch ratios were arranged into two different forms: (1) D-coil (decreasing coil pitch ratio arrangement) and (2) DI-coil (decreasing/increasing coil pitch ratio arrangement) while the twisted tapes were prepared with two different twist ratios. Each device alone is also tested and the results are subjected for comparison with those from the combined devices. The experiments were conducted in a turbulent flow regime with Reynolds numbers ranging from 4600 to 20,000 using air as the test fluid. Compared to each enhancement device, the heat transfer rate is further augmented by the compound devices. Over the range investigated, the highest thermal performance factor of around 1.25 is found by using DI-coil in common with the TT at lower Reynolds number. In addition, the empirical correlations of the heat transfer (Nu) and pressure drop (f) are also presented. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
