    A 3D numerical investigation of thermal performance augmentation of a twisted multiple V–baffles in a solar air heater is presented. Two important functions of the twisted multiple V–baffles are to generate multiple impinging flows upon the wall to improve the convective heat transfer (compared with a smooth channel) and reduce the pressure drop (compared with a typical multiple V–baffles). These outcomes enhance thermal performance. The results of heat transfer (in terms of a Nusselt number ratio), pressure drop (in terms of a friction factor ratio) and thermal performance (in terms of a thermal enhancement factor) of a twisted multiple V–baffles were compared with both a smooth channel and a typical multiple V–baffles. Eighty–one cases including those with a pitch ratio of PR = 0.4–2.0; blockage ratio, BR = 0.10–0.20; angle of attack, α = 30o – 60o and a fixed number of twisted loops, n = 2, were investigated in turbulent flow. The results revealed that the twisted multiple V–baffles created multiple impinging jets at the heated wall and help accelerate heat transfer between the wall and the fluid. Compared to a typical multiple V–baffles, the friction factor showed a large decrease while the Nusselt number was slightly lower leading to better thermal performance. Over the study range, PR = 0.4, BR = 0.20, and α = 60o appeared to yield the highest thermal enhancement factor, 2.81 at Re = 3000.

    This article presents a study of aerothermal performance of tubes with regularly-spaced multi-channel twisted tape elements (RS-MTT) installed. This research aimed to find the proper design RS-MTTs that induce swirl flow which potentially improves fluid mixing between the core fluid and the fluid near the tube wall, thereby accelerating the heat transfer rate. Additionally, the effects of Reynolds numbers and free-spacing ratios (s/y) on heat transfer, friction loss, and thermal performance behaviors were examined. The RS-MTTs having different free-spacing ratios (s/y) of 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 were tested. Air was utilized as the testing fluid in experiments with Reynolds numbers (Re) spanning from 6000 to 20,000. The utilization of RS-MTTs with s/y = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 augmented heat transfer rates up to 1.74, 1.80, 1.85, 1.90, and 2.15 times given by the plain tube alone while the friction factors increased by 4.22, 4.61, 3.87, and 4.05 times, respectively. At the lowest Reynolds number of 6000, the thermal enhancement factors of the tube containing the RS-MTTs with s/y = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 reached the maximum values of 1.42, 1.35, 1.31, 1.27, and 1.23, respectively. Among the RS-MTTs tested, the RS-MTT with s/y = 0.0 showed the best thermal enhancement factor of 4.56%, corresponding to the heat transfer augmented of 11.52% with a friction penalty of 8.71%.

    An experimental study of heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in a circular tube fitted by twisted tapes with nonuniform twist ratios is reported. The twisted tapes are used as swirl generators playing roles as heat transfer enhancers. The nonuniform twisted tapes examined in the present work have (1) sequentially increasing twist ratios (SL), (2) sequentially decreasing twist ratios (LS), (3) repeatedly increasing-decreasing twist ratios (SL/SL), (4) repeatedly decreasing-increasing twist ratios (LS/LS), (5) intermittently increasing-decreasing twist ratios (SL→LS), and (6) intermittently decreasing-increasing twist ratios (LS→SL). In addition, three different typical twisted tapes with twist ratios of 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 (TT) were also evaluated. Apparently, LS yields monotonically increasing swirling intensity and SL decreasing swirling intensity, resulting in lower heat transfer rate and friction factor than the other four nonuniform twisted tapes, which possess extra fluid fluctuation. However, among the tapes tested, the SL/SL offers the maximum thermal performance factor of around 1.03, which corresponds to Nusselt number of around 36% and friction factor of 3.57 times over those of the plain tube. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

    Thermal characterization of turbulent tube flows over diamond-shaped elements in tandem
    (2010-06-01)

    ;

    Experiments have been conducted to investigate the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of the fully developed turbulent airflow through a uniform heat flux tube fitted with diamond-shaped turbulators in tandem arrangements. In the experiments, strong turbulence and recirculation flow is expected by using tandem diamond-shaped turbulators (D-shape turbulator) connected to each other by a small rod and placed inside the test tube. The parameters for this study are consisted of Reynolds number (Re) from 3500 to 16,500, the included cone angle (θ = 15°, 30° and 45°), and the tail length ratio (TR = l<inf>t</inf>/l<inf>h</inf> = 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) defined as the ratio of the tail length (l<inf>t</inf>) to the head length of turbulator (l<inf>h</inf>). The variation of Nusselt number and friction factor with Reynolds number under the effect of those parameters are determined and presented. The experimental result reveals that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing Reynolds number and the included cone angle (θ) but decreases with the rise of the tail length ratio (TR). This is because of the mixing of the fluid in the boundary layer thereby enhancing the convective heat transfer and increasing pressure loss. For the tube with the turbulator of θ = 45°, the heat transfer enhancement is found to be 67%, 57% and 46% for tail length ratio, TR = 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, respectively. Correlations of the Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) are developed for the evaluation of interactive effects of using the turbulators on the heat transfer and pressure loss. The good agreement between the experimental and the correlated results is obtained within 5-7% deviation. In addition, the heat transfer enhancement efficiency determined under constant pumping power is also provided. © 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

    The paper presents a comparative investigation of enhanced heat transfer and pressure loss by insertion of single twisted tape, full-length dual and regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes as swirl generators, in a round tube under axially uniform wall heat flux (UHF) conditions. The investigation encompassed the Reynolds number based on the inlet tube diameter (D) ranging from 4000 to 19,000. The experiments are performed using single twisted tapes and full-length dual twisted tapes with three different twist ratios (y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and also regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes with three different space ratios (s/D = 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25). The effects of major parameters on heat transfer and friction factor are discussed and the results from both single and dual twisted tape inserts are compared with those from the plain tube. The result shows that the heat transfer of the tube with dual twisted tapes is higher than that of the plain tube with/without single twisted tape insert. For both single twisted tape and full-length dual twisted tapes, Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) tend to increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). The average Nusselt number and friction factor in the tube fitted with the full-length dual twisted tapes at y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, are respectively 146%, 135% and 128%; and 2.56, 2.17 and 1.95 times of those in the plain tube. For the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes, the heat transfer rate is decreased with increasing space ratio (s/D). The average Nusselt numbers in the tube fitted with the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes (s/D) of 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 are respectively, 140%, 137% and 133% of that in the plain tube. With the similar trend mentioned above, all dual twisted tapes with free spacing yield lower heat transfer enhancement in comparison with the full-length dual twisted tapes (s/D = 0.0). © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Experimental work has been performed to examine the combined effects of rib-grooved turbulators on the turbulent forced convection heat transfer and friction characteristics in a rectangular duct under a uniform heat flux boundary condition. In the experiments, three types of rib-groove arrangements: rectangular-rib and triangular-groove (RR-TG), triangular-rib and rectangular-groove (TR-RG) and triangular-rib with triangular-groove (TR-TG), were examined. Measurements were carried out for the duct of one aspect ratio, AR = W/H = 20 and duct height, H = 9 mm with rib height, e = 3 mm at three pitch ratios, PR = P/e = 6.6, 10 and 13.3. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 3000 to 10,000. Influences of rib-groove arrangements on the Nusselt number and friction factor have been discussed and compared with smooth duct results under similar test conditions. Isothermal friction factors were also taken and presented. The obtained results of the smooth duct are in good agreement with the previous studies found in the literature. Experimental results also show that the duct with RR-TG arrangement provides maximum heat transfer rate and friction factor than others. On the other hand, the thermal enhancement index obtained at constant pumping power reveals that the TR-TG provides the highest values for all pitch ratios studied. Finally, correlations for the heat transfer (Nu), friction factor (f) and the enhancement index (η) have been developed as a function of pitch ratio (PR) and Reynolds number (Re). © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Friction and compound heat transfer behaviors in a dimpled tube fitted with a twisted tape swirl generator are investigated experimentally using air as working fluid. The effects of the pitch and twist ratio on the average heat transfer coefficient and the pressure loss are determined in a circular tube with the fully developed flow for the Reynolds number in the range of 12,000 to 44,000. The experiments are performed using two dimpled tubes with different pitch ratios of dimpled surfaces (PR = 0.7 and 1.0) and three twisted tapes with three different twist ratios (y/w = 3, 5, and 7). Experiments using plain tube and dimpled tube acting alone are also carried out for comparison. The experimental results reveal that both heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the dimpled tube fitted with the twisted tape, are higher than those in the dimple tube acting alone and plain tube. It is also found that the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the combined devices increase as the pitch ratio (PR) and twist ratio (y/w) decrease. In addition, an empirical correlation based on the experimental results of the present study is sufficiently accurate for prediction the heat transfer (Nu) and friction factor (f) behaviors. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. This work presents an experimental study on the mean Nusselt number, friction factor and enhancement efficiency characteristics in a round tube with short-length twisted tape insert under uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. In the experiments, measured data are taken at Reynolds numbers in a turbulent region with air as the test fluid. The full-length twisted tape is inserted into the tested tube at a single twist ratio of y/w = 4.0 while the short-length tapes mounted at the entry test section are used at several tape length ratios (LR = l<inf>s</inf>/l<inf>f</inf>) of 0.29, 0.43, 0.57 and 1.0 (full-length tape). The short-length tape is introduced as a swirling flow device for generating a strong swirl flow at the tube entry before decaying along the tube. On the other hand, the full-length tape (LR = 1.0) is expected to produce a strongly swirling flow over the whole tube. The variation of heat transfer and pressure loss in the form of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) respectively is determined and depicted graphically. The experimental result indicates that the short-length tapes of LR = 0.29, 0.43 and 0.57 perform lower heat transfer and friction factor values than the full-length tape around 14%, 9.5% and 6.7%; and 21%, 15.3% and 10.5%, respectively. In addition, it is apparent that the enhancement efficiency of the tube with the short-length tape insert is found to be lower than that with the full-length one. The mean deviation between measured and correlated values of the Nusselt number is in the order of ± 7% in the range of Reynolds numbers from 4000 to 20,000. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    In the present work, heat transfer and friction characteristics were experimentally investigated, employing louvered strips inserted in a concentric tube heat exchanger. The louvered strip was inserted into the tube to generate turbulent flow which helped to increase the heat transfer rate of the tube. The flow rate of the tube was in a range of Reynolds number between 6000 and 42,000. The turbulent flow devices were consisted of (1) the louvered strips with forward or backward arrangements, and (2) the louvered strip with various inclined angles (θ = 15°, 25° and 30°), inserted in the inner tube of the heat exchanger. In the experiment, hot water was flowed through the inner tube whereas cold water was flowed in the annulus. The experimental data obtained were compared with those from plain tubes of published data. Experimental results confirmed that the use of louvered strips leads to a higher heat transfer rate over the plain tube. The increases in average Nusselt number and friction loss for the inclined forward louvered strip were 284% and 413% while those for the backward louvered strip were 263% and 233% over the plain tube, respectively. In addition, the use of the louvered strip with backward arrangement leads to better overall enhancement ratio than that with forward arrangement around 9% to 24%. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
