Overvoltage is a critical problem of Thailand’ distribution system. The electrical protection device in the distribution system needs to be able to support this level of overvoltage. In the distribution system connecting the Chachoengsao2 substation and the Bang Khla substation, the overvoltage from a ferro resonance phenomenon affects the surge arrester directly. This research studies the effect of the drop-out fuse connection scheme on the voltage and surge arrester using the RMS/EMT Simulation mode in the DIgSILENT program. Normally, the surge arrester withstands a voltage of 1.9 p.u. of the phase voltage. If the overvoltage in the distribution system is higher than the voltage that the surge arrester can withstand, the surge arrester can be damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to study and analyze the drop out fuse insertion pattern that affects the overvoltage in the distribution system to understand the causes of overvoltage problems and their effects on each type of electrical protective equipment.

In the recent decade, there has been a rising concern in energy consumption and environmental issues. This trend has shifted the electric authority to focus from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The distributed generation (DG) using a renewable energy source has been raising. The presence of DG can cause using renewable energy sources to cause a technical issue on system protection and operation. This paper aims to study the impact of different DG size installations on the distribution system in terms of the system characteristics. The study is done in both normal conditions and in cases of fault occurrence. The system using in this research is a 22-kV distribution system consists of Wind Power Generation as the DG connected into the distribution line that modeled after part of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in the northern part of Thailand. The simulation was done using PSCAD software. The result from simulation reveals the impact of DG on the distribution system characteristics in terms of significant change in the measured current and voltage signal. Thus, the analysis of the impact of DG on the system must be done to ensure the reliability of the power system.

In the recent decade, many countries around the globe have been increased the proportion of electrical power generation from renewable energy sources, which results in rising in the penetration level of distributed generation (DG). However, the installation of DG into the distribution system may raise many issues that can impact the distribution system in both the technical and economic aspects. When DG is connected to a distribution system, it can affect the performance of the system and the protective device already installed owing to the change of voltage level, short-circuit level and direction of power flow in the system. For this reason, a protective device may cause the malfunction because the bus impedance of the system is changed; this will result in a change of the current in each bus. This paper aims to study the coordination between the protective relay and the DG installed into the distribution system. The distribution system under investigation is a part of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA). Under this research, DG data that are connected to the PEA distribution is used. The simulations are performed using digital simulation and electrical network calculation program (DIgSILENT).

This paper proposed a fault type classification algorithm in a distribution system consisting of multiple distributed generations (DGs). The study also discussed the changing of signal characteristics in the distribution system with DGs during the occurrence of dierent fault types. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)-based signal processing has been used to construct a classification algorithm and a decision tree to classify fault types. The input data for the algorithm is extracted from the three-phase current signal under normal conditions and during fault occurrence. These signals are recorded from the substation, load, and DG bus. The performance of the proposed classifying algorithm has been tested on a simulation system that was modeled after part of Thailand's 22 kV distribution system, with a 2-MW wind power generation as the DG, connected to the distribution line by PSCAD software. The parameters that were taken into consideration consisted of the fault type, location of the fault, location of DG(s), and the number of DGs, to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm under various conditions. The result of the simulation indicated significant changes in current signal characteristics when installing DGs. In addition, the proposed algorithm has achieved a satisfactory accuracy in terms of identifying and classifying fault types when applied to a distribution system with multiple DGs.
