An experimental investigation was carried out to explore the thermal performance and frictional loss features in a solar air heater (SAH) channel that was intentionally roughened on the absorber surface using multiple inclined groove turbulators. The working fluid, air, flows into the SAH channel, which has a consistent surface heat flux for Reynolds numbers (Re) varying between 5290 and 22,600 in the current research. Thermal characteristics at a single inclination angle (a = 45°) are investigated in this research by comparing the effects of three distinct relative groove frequencies (P/H=PR=0.8, 1.2 and 1.6) and groove depth ratios (D/H=DR=0.16, 0.24 and 0.32). The findings highlight that the employ of inclined grooves results in a noticeable rise in Nusselt number (Nu) from 1.24 to 2.82 times relative to the smooth absorber plate (smooth channel), as well as a 1.88 to 7.9 times increase in friction factor (f). The Nu and f show an increasing trend when Re increases, whereas the opposite pattern occurs as DR and PR increase. At PR = 0.8 and DR = 0.32, the inclined groove roughness has the largest thermal effectiveness factor (TEF) of around 1.64. The Nu and f correlations, which are functions of inclined groove features, have also been established.

Influences of baffle pitch ratio (p/w) and attached angle of arc-shaped baffles (AB) on the overall performance index (OPI) of a channel installed with AB have been carefully studied. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the OPI of the channel was reported. The arc-shaped baffle (AB) showed a significant effect on the augmented heat transfer and friction loss penalty as compared to a smooth channel. As the attached arc shaped angle (θ) increased, both Nusselt number and friction factor intensified. The Nusselt number values at θ = 90° were higher than those at θ = 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80° by up to 5.8%, 3.9%, 2.3% and 2.5%, respectively. The Nusselt number increased when the p/w was raised from 4.0 to 8.0 while the opposite trend was observed when the p/w was raised from 8.0 to 12.0. The maximum OPI of 1.43 was achieved by using the baffles with θ = 90° and pitch ratio of 8.0 at Re = 4000. For the development of ANN models for predicting the OPI, it was found that the best predictive performance was (R2) of 0.99843407 for ANN model of 3-50-50-1 with Tanh-Tanh activation function at epoch of 1200.

Influence of perforated helical twisted-tapes (P-HTTs) on the heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance characteristics under a uniform heat flux condition is reported. The P-HTTs were obtained by perforating typical helical twisted-tapes (HTTs) with a prospect to reduce the friction loss of fluid flow. The experiments were conducted using P-HTTs' three different diameter ratios (d/. w) of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, and three different perforation pitch ratios (s/. w) of 1, 1.5 and 2. The helical pitch ratio and twist ratio were fixed at P/. D=2 and y/. w=3. Tests were performed for Reynolds number between 6000 and 20,000. The experiments using the plain tube and the tubes with HTTs were also carried out for assessment. The experimental results reveal that the use of P-HTTs leads to the reduction of friction loss as compare to that of HTT. Heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance factor increase as d/. w decreases and s/. w increases. For the present range, the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.28 is obtained by using the P-HTT with d/. w=0.2 and s/. w=2.0 at the Reynolds number of 6000. In addition, the empirical correlations for Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor give accurate predictions within ±. 4%, ±. 6% and ±. 3%, respectively. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

The paper presents an experimental study on heat transfer and flow friction characteristics in a rectangular channel fitted with periodically rectangular V-ribs. The multiple V-rib turbulators are tested in the channel having an aspect ratio (width to height ratio), AR=10 and height, H= 30 mm, with three rib-to-channel height ratios (e/H=0.2, 0.3, and 0.4), two rib-pitch to channel-height ratios (PR=P<inf>1</inf>/H= 3 and 4) and a single attack angle (α=30°). The upper plate of channel is uniformly heated at a constant heat-flux. The experiment has been conducted by varying airflow velocity in order to obtain the Reynolds number range from 5000 to 24,000. The experimental results show a significant effect of the presence of the ribs on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop over the smooth channel. The measured data indicates that the V-rib turbulators with e/H = 0.4 and PR =3 yields the highest heat transfer rate and friction loss. All the V-rib turbulators perform much higher than the smooth channel with no rib. © 2014 Asian Institute of Technology.

The paper presents a study on heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance behaviors in a solar air heater channel fitted with baffle turbulator (BT) or triangular-winglet vortex generator (WVG) at various winglet/baffle to channel-height or blockage ratios (BR=b/H=0.1 0.15 and 0.2). The BT and the WVG were placed only on the upper wall/absorber plate of the test channel at a single axial pitch ratio (PR=P<inf>1</inf>/H=4). The investigation is performed for the Reynolds number ranging from 5400 to 23,000. The upper wall of the channel is uniformly heated as a constant heat flux while the rests are covered with thermal insulations to reduce heat loss to surroundings. The BT and the WVG were, respectively, mounted with the attack angle of 90° and 60° relative to main flow direction. The experimental results indicate that the absorber plate with the WVGs provides considerable improvement of the heat transfer rate over the smooth channel around 4.29 to 4.33 times for BR=0.2. The use of the WVG placed on the absorber plate leads to the highest heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal performance in comparison with the BT and the smooth channel. The WVG at BR=0.2 provides the maximum thermal performance up to 1.61. Thus, because of stronger vortex flow, the WVG at largest BR becomes influential upon the heat transfer and thermal performance enhancement. © 2014 Asian Institute of Technology.

Experimental work has been performed to examine the effects of V-baffle vortex generators on the heat transfer and friction characteristics in a channel under a constant heat flux boundary condition. In the experiments, V-baffles at different pitch ratios (PR=P/e = 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0) were carried out. Measurements were carried out for a channel of one aspect ratio, AR = W/H = 4.0 and duct height, H= 40 mm with baffle height, e = 8 mm. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 6000 to 22,000. The distributions of temperature and local Nusselt number on bottom channel wall were observed with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. Isothermal friction factors were also taken and presented. The obtained results demonstrate that heat transfer increases with the increase of Reynolds number, whereas friction factor (f) shows the opposite trend. Experimental results also show that the channels with V-baffle at the highest pitch ratio (PR = 8.0) provide highest heat transfer than others. © 2014 Asian Institute of Technology.

Laminar periodic flow and heat transfer in a three-dimensional channel with triangular wavy baffles (TWBs) have been numerically investigated. The baffles with three different angles of attack: 30°, 45° and 60° have been considered for Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 1000. For a better understanding in the heat transfer mechanisms, the pressure contour, secondary flow pattern, streamlines of impinging flow, wall streamline and iso-surface are also reported. Apparently, each wavy baffle generates two counter-rotating vortices. The 30° and 45° baffles generate vortices with comparable intensities which are considerably higher than that caused by 60° baffles. At similar conditions, the 30° and 45° baffles give comparable Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf> values which are considerably higher than that provided by the 60° baffles, but the 30° baffles cause lower f/f <inf>0</inf> than the 45° and 60° baffles. For the range determined, the maximum thermal performances achieved by using baffles with the attack angles of 30°, 45° and 60° are 2.3, 2.2, and 1.88, respectively. © 2013 The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Effects of combined ribs and delta-winglet type vortex generators (DWs) on forced convection heat transfer and friction loss behaviors for turbulent airflow through a solar air heater channel are experimentally investigated in the present work. Measurements are carried out in the rectangular channel of aspect ratio, AR=10 and height, H=30mm. The flow rate is presented in the form of Reynolds numbers based on the inlet hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 5000 to 22,000. The cross-section shape of the rib placed on the absorber plate to create a reverse-flow is an isosceles triangle with a single rib height, e/H=0.2 and rib pitch, P<inf>l</inf>/H=1.33. Ten pairs of the DW with its height, b/H=0.4; transverse pitch, P<inf>t</inf>/H=1 and three attack angles (α) of 60°, 45° and 30° are introduced and mounted on the lower plate entrance of the tested channel to generate longitudinal vortex flows. The experimental results show that the Nusselt number and friction factor values for combined rib and DW are found to be much higher than those for the rib/DW alone. The larger attack angle of the DW leads to higher heat transfer and friction loss than the lower one. In common with the rib, the DW pointing upstream (PU-DW) is found to give higher heat transfer rate and friction loss than the DW pointing downstream (PD-DW) at a similar operating condition. In comparison, the largest attack angle (α=60°) of the PU-DW yields the highest increase in both the Nusselt number and friction factor while the lowest attack angle of the PD-DW provides the best thermal performance. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A numerical investigation has been carried out to study laminar flow and heat transfer characteristics in a three-dimensional isothermal wall square-channel with 30° staggered angled-baffles. The computations are based on the finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm has been implemented. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 100 to 1200. To generate a pair of stream wise counter-rotating vortex (P-vortex) flows through the tested channel, the baffles (like rectangular winglet) with the attack angle of 30° are mounted in tandem and staggered arrangement on both upper and lower walls of the test channel. Effects of different baffle heights at a single pitch ratio (PR=3) on heat transfer and pressure loss in the channel are studied. It is found that P-vortex flows created by the 30° baffle exist and help to induce impinging jets on a side wall and the upper and lower wall leading to drastic increase in heat transfer rate over the test channel. In addition, the increase in the baffle height results in the rise of Nusselt number and friction factor values. The computational results reveal that the optimum thermal enhancement factor of the baffle is about 2.9 at height of 0.15 times of the channel height.

Laminar periodic flow and heat transfer in a two dimensional horizontal channel with isothermal walls and with staggered triangular baffles are numerically investigated. The computations are based on the finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm with QUICK scheme is implemented. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 100 to 600. Effects of different baffle tip angles on heat transfer and pressure loss in the channel are studied and the results of the triangular baffle are also compared with those of the flat baffle. It is observed that apart from the rise of Reynolds number, the reduction of the baffle tip angle leads to an increase in the Nusselt number and friction factor. According to the computational results for triangular baffles, the optimum thermal performance is found at the baffle angle of 5°, baffle height to channel height ratio of 0.5 and baffle spacing to channel height ratio of 1.0. In addition, the thermal performances of the 5°-10° triangular baffles are found to be higher than that of the flat baffle for all Reynolds numbers used. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.
