An investigation on heat transfer characteristics in a solar air heater channel using wavy grooves incorporated with pairs of trapezoidal-winglets (TW) placed on the absorber plate has been experimentally conducted. Air as the test fluid entered the test section having a constant heat-flux on the absorber plate while the Reynolds numbers obtained by controlling the airflow rate is in a range of 4500–22,000. The TW characteristics include three relative winglet-pitches (P<inf>R</inf>) and five relative winglet height or blockage ratios (B<inf>R</inf>) at a single attack angle of 45° whereas the wavy rectangular-groove parameters are three relative groove-pitch lengths (P<inf>R</inf>) similar to the TW case but at a fixed width and height. The investigation shows that the TW together with the groove provides the substantial increase in heat transfer over the smooth channel. The TW alone gives much higher heat transfer but the groove yields considerably lower pressure drop. The combined groove and TW devices at a given B<inf>R</inf>, perform the highest heat transfer and friction factor at smaller P<inf>R</inf> and also provides considerably higher thermal performance than the single device acting alone. At P<inf>R</inf> = 1, the compound device with B<inf>R</inf> = 0.28 offers the highest heat transfer and friction factor while the one with B<inf>R</inf> = 0.24 gives the maximum thermal performance.

This article presents the study of heat transfer enhancement in a uniform heat-fluxed channel fitted with discrete V-shaped baffles. The experiments are carried out by varying airflow rate for Reynolds number ranging from 4100 to 22,000. The V-baffles with relative height ratio, e/H = 0.15 and the attack angle, a = 45o, are mounted repeatedly on the upper plate only, similar to an absorber plate of solar air heater systems. The effects of four baffle-pitch to channel-height ratios (PR= 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) on heat transfer in terms of Nusselt number and pressure loss in the form of friction factor are experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the use of the discrete V-baffles leads to a considerable increase in Nusselt number and friction factor in comparison to the smooth channel alone. The V-baffled channel with PR=0.5 provides the highest heat transfer, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Influences of arc-shaped baffles turbulators (ASB) on thermal behaviors in a solar air heater channel are studied. In the experiment, the ASB with three pitch ratios (P/e) are placed on the absorber plate (bottom channel wall in this case) to generate stronger turbulence intensity in the channel. The distributions of temperature and local Nusselt number contours in the absorber plate fitted with ASB are observed with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. The results reveal that the heat transfer increases with the decrease in P/e due to longitudinal vortex flow effect. The heat transfer from employing the ASB at P/e = 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 is higher than the smooth channel around 116%, 120% and 127%, respectively. This indicates that the ASB pitch spacing is optimal at 8 times baffle height in the present work.

A numerical investigation has been carried out to examine periodic laminar flow and heat transfer characteristics in a three-dimensional isothermal wall channel of aspect ratio, AR=2 with 45° staggered V-baffles. The computations are based on the finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm has been implemented. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 100 to 1200. To generate two pair of main streamwise vortex flows through the tested section, V-baffles with an attack angle of 45° are mounted in tandem and staggered arrangement on the lower and upper walls of the channel. Effects of different baffle heights on heat transfer and pressure drop in the channel are studied and the results of the V-baffle pointing upstream are also compared with those of the V-baffle pointing downstream. It is apparent that in each of the main vortex flows, a pair of streamwise twisted vortex (P-vortex) flows can induce impinging flows on a sidewall and a wall of the interbaffle cavity leading to drastic increase in heat transfer rate over the channel. In addition, the rise in the V-baffle height results in the increase in the Nusselt number and friction factor values. The computational results reveal that the optimum thermal enhancement factor is around 2.6 at baffle height of 0.15. times of the channel height for the V-baffle pointing upstream while is about 2.75 at baffle height of 0.2. times for the V-baffle pointing downstream. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

Experimental investigations have been carried out to study the effect of combined wedge ribs and winglet type vortex generators (WVGs) on heat transfer and friction loss behaviors for turbulent airflow through a constant heat flux channel. To create a reverse flow in the channel, two types of wedge (right-triangle) ribs are introduced: wedge ribs pointing downstream and pointing upstream. The arrangements of both rib types placed inside the opposite channel walls are in-line and staggered arrays. To generate longitudinal vortex flows through the tested section, two pairs of the WVGs with the attack angle of 60° are mounted on the test channel entrance. The test channel has an aspect ratio, AR = 10 and height, H = 30 mm with a rib height, e/H = 0.2 and rib pitch, P/H = 1.33. The flow rate in terms of Reynolds numbers is based on the inlet hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 5000 to 22,000. The presence of the combined ribs and the WVGs shows the significant increase in heat transfer rate and friction loss over the smooth channel. The Nusselt number and friction factor values obtained from combined the ribs and the WVGs are found to be much higher than those from the ribs/WVGs alone. In conjunction with the WVGs, the in-line wedge pointing downstream provides the highest increase in both the heat transfer rate and the friction factor while the staggered wedge pointing upstream yields the best thermal performance. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The forced convection heat transfer and friction loss behaviors for turbulent airflow through a constant heat flux channel solar air heater with rectangular winglet vortex generator (WVG) are experimentally investigated in this work. The rectangular winglet pairs are considered with two different arrangements by pointing upstream (PU) and pointing downstream (PD) of the flow. Ten pairs of the WVGs with various attack angles (a) of 60°, 45° and 30° are mounted on the test duct entrance wall to create longitudinal vortex flows over the tested channel. Measurements are carried out for the rectangular channel air heater of aspect ratio, AR = 10 and height, H = 30 mm with the WVG height, b/H = 0.4 and a transverse pitch ratio, P/H = 1. The flow rate is in terms of Reynolds numbers based on the inlet hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 5000 to 23,000. The experimental results show that the solar air heater channel with rectangular WVG provides significantly higher heat transfer rate and friction loss than the smooth wall channel. The use of larger attack angle value leads to higher heat transfer rate and friction loss than that of lower one. The PD-WVGs performs higher heat transfer rate and friction loss than the PU one for similar operating conditions. In comparison, the largest attack angle (α= 60°) of the PDWVGs yields the highest increase in Nusselt number and friction factor while the lowest attack angle (α = 30°) of the PU-WVGs shows the best thermal performance.

Numerical study on heat transfer of turbulent channel flow over periodic grooves

A numerical investigation of turbulent forced convection in a two-dimensional channel with periodic transverse grooves on the lower channel wall is conducted. The lower wall is subjected to a uniform heat flux condition while the upper wall is insulated. To investigate turbulence model effects, computations based on a finite volume method, are carried out by utilizing four turbulence models: the standard k - ε, the Renormalized Group (RNG) k - ε, the standard k - ω, and the shear stress transport (SST) k - ω turbulence models. Parametric runs are made for Reynolds numbers ranging from 6000 to 18,000 with the groove-width to channel-height ratio (B/H) of 0.5 to 1.75 while the groove pitch ratio of 2 and the depth ratio of 0.5 are fixed throughout. The predicted results from using several turbulence models reveal that the RNG and the k - ε turbulence models generally provide better agreement with available measurements than others. Therefore, the k - ε model is selected to use in prediction of this complex flow. In addition, the results of the heat transfer coefficient, friction factor, skin friction coefficient and thermal enhancement factor are also examined. It is found that the grooved channel provides a considerable increase in heat transfer at about 158% over the smooth channel and a maximum gain of 1.33 on thermal performance factor is obtained for the case of B/H = 0.75. This indicates that the reverse/re-circulation flow in a channel with transverse grooves can improve the heat transfer rate. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
