Item type:Item, Thermal performance in solar air heater with perforated-winglet-type vortex generator(2018-08-01) ;Skullong, Sompol ;Promthaisong, Pitak ;Promvonge, Pongjet ;Thianpong, ChinarukPimsarn, MonsakAn experimental and numerical study of turbulent convective heat transfer in a solar air heater duct with winglet-type vortex generators (WVGs) placed on the absorber plate is presented. Air as the test fluid enters the duct having a uniform wall heat-flux applied on the upper wall or the absorber plate with Reynolds number from 4100 to 25,500. Two types of WVGs are introduced: rectangular (RWVG) and trapezoidal (TWVG) WVGs, in order to create multiple vortex flows along the duct. The WVG parameters in the present study include two relative height (B<inf>R</inf> = e/H = 0.2 and 0.48), three longitudinal pitch ratios (P<inf>R</inf> = P<inf>l</inf>/H = 1, 1.5 and 2) and a single attack angle, α = 30°. The experimental result reveals that the RWVG with B<inf>R</inf> = 0.48 and P<inf>R</inf> = 1 provides the highest heat transfer and friction factor at about 7.1 and 109.5 times above the flat duct, respectively while the TWVG with B<inf>R</inf> = 0.2 and P<inf>R</inf> = 1.5 yields the maximum thermal performance around 1.84. Then, to improve the performance by reducing the substantial pressure loss, both the WVGs with B<inf>R</inf> = 0.48 and P<inf>R</inf> = 1.5 are modified to be perforated rectangular and trapezoidal winglet-type vortex generators (P-RWVG and P-TWVG) with four different punched hole/pore diameters (d = 1, 3, 5 and 7 mm) on their central area. The investigation indicates that among the perforated WVGs, the P-RWVG at d = 1 mm yields the highest heat transfer and friction factor up to 6.78 and 84.32 times higher than the smooth duct but the best thermal performance of about 2.01 is found for the P-TWVG with d = 5 mm. To explore the flow and heat transfer pattern, a 3D numerical flow simulation is performed and validated with available measurements where both the numerical and measured results are in good agreement. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Thermal performance of tubular heat exchanger with multiple twisted-tape inserts(2015-05-01) ;Chokphoemphun, Suriya ;Pimsarn, Monsak ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe paper presents an experimental investigation on enhanced heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics by using single, double, triple, and quadruple twisted-tape inserts in a round tube having a uniform heat-fluxed wall. The investigation has been conducted in the heat exchanger tube inserted with various twisted-tape numbers for co- and counter-twist arrangements for the turbulent air flow, Reynolds number (Re) from 5300 to 24000. The typical single twisted-tape inserts at two twist ratios, y/w = 4 and 5, are used as the base case, while the other multiple twisted-tape inserts are at y/w = 4 only. The experimental results of heat transfer and pressure drop in terms of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f), respectively, reveal that Nu increases with the increment of Re and of twisted-tape number. The values of Nu for the inserted tube are in a range of 1.15-2.12 times that for the plain tube while f is 1.9-4.1 times. The thermal enhancement factor of the inserted tube under similar pumping power is evaluated and found to be above unity except for the single and the double co-twisted tapes. The quadruple counter-twisted tape insert provides the maximum thermal performance. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Heat transfer augmentation in a circular tube with winglet vortex generators(2015-04-01) ;Chokphoemphun, Suriya ;Pimsarn, Monsak ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe article presents the influence of winglet vortex generators (WVGs) placed in the core flow area on thermal performance enhancement of a tube heat exchanger. The experiment was carried out in a uniform wall heat-fluxed tube by varying turbulent airflow for Reynolds number ranging from 5300 to 24000. In the present work, the WVGs with an attack angle of 30° were inserted into the test tube at four different winglet pitch ratios (R<inf>P</inf> = P/D) and three winglet-width or blockage ratios (R<inf>B</inf> = e/D). The experimental results at various R<inf>P</inf> and R<inf>B</inf> values were evaluated and compared with those for smooth tube and tubes with twisted tape or wire coil. The measurement reveals that the WVGs enhance considerably the heat transfer and friction loss above the plain tube, wire coil and twisted tape. The Nusselt number and friction factor increase with the increment of R<inf>B</inf> and Re but with the decreasing R<inf>P</inf>. The average Nusselt numbers for the WVGs with various R<inf>B</inf> are in the range of 2.03-2.34 times above the plain tube. The thermal performance for the WVGs is found to be much higher than that for the wire coil and twisted tape and is in a range of 1.35-1.59. Also, a numerical investigation is conducted to study the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement mechanisms in the winglet-inserted tube. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Thermal performance enhancement in a heat exchanger tube fitted with inclined vortex rings(2014-01-01) ;Promvonge, Pongjet ;Koolnapadol, Narin ;Pimsarn, MonsakThianpong, ChinarukThe influence of inclined vortex rings (VR) on heat transfer augmentation in a uniform heat-fluxed tube has been investigated experimentally. In the present work, the 30 inclined VRs were mounted repeatedly in the tube with various geometry parameters of the VR, three relative ring width ratios (BR = b/D = 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2) and four relative ring pitch ratios (PR = P/D = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). Air was employed as the test fluid in the tube for the Reynolds number from 5000 to 26,000. The aim at using the VRs is to create counter-rotating vortices inside the tube to help increase the turbulence intensity as well as to convey the colder fluid from the core regime to the heated-wall region. To find an optimum thermal performance condition, the effect of BR and PR values on the heat transfer and pressure loss in the tube is examined. The experimental results show a significant effect of the presence of the VRs on the heat transfer and pressure loss over the smooth tube. The larger BR value provides higher heat transfer and pressure loss than the smaller one while the PR gives an opposite trend. However, the VR at BR = 0.1 and PR = 0.5 yields the best thermal performance. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

The experimental results of the heat transfer and pressure drop are proposed in terms of Nusselt number and friction factor, respectively. The experimental results reveal thatthe maximum TEF for the triple counter-twisted tapesat smaller twist ratio isabout 1.26. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Experimental and numerical study on heat transfer enhancement in a channel with Z-shaped baffles(2012-08-01) ;Sriromreun, Parkpoom ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe influence of baffle turbulators on heat transfer augmentation in a rectangular channel has been investigated experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, the baffles are placed in a zigzag shape (Z-shaped baffle) aligned in series on the isothermal-fluxed top wall, similar to the absorber plate of a solar air heater channel. The aim at using the Z-baffles is to create co-rotating vortex flows having a significant influence on the flow turbulence intensity leading to higher heat transfer enhancement in the tested channel. Effects of the Z-baffle height and pitch spacing length are examined to find the optimum thermal performance for the Reynolds number from 4400 to 20,400. The Z-baffles inclined to 45° relative to the main flow direction are characterized at three baffle- to channel-height ratios (e/. H= 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) and baffle pitch ratios (P/. H= 1.5, 2 and 3). The experimental results show a significant effect of the presence of the Z-baffle on the heat transfer rate and friction loss over the smooth channel with no baffle. The Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance enhancement factor for the in-phase 45° Z-baffles are found to be considerably higher than those for the out-phase 45° Z-baffle at a similar operating condition. The in-phase 45° Z-baffle with larger e/. H provides higher heat transfer and friction loss than the one with smaller e/. H while the shorter pitch length yields the higher Nu, f and TEF than the larger one. The numerical work is also conducted to investigate the flow friction and heat transfer behaviors in the channel mounted with the 45° Z-baffles, and the numerical results are found in good agreement with experimental data. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
