Heat transfer rate and pressure drop characteristics are two critical constraints that substantially influence the advancement of solar air heaters. The thermal efficacy of these systems is significantly improved by factors such as flow configurations, thermal mechanisms, and geometric modifications. The integration of insertion in turbulators is a common method to improve heat transfer efficiency in solar air heaters. This article presents heat transfer and thermal efficiency in a tubular heat exchanger incorporating Delta winglet (DW). The thermal transfer and pressure drop of air as a working fluid in a tube with a constant heat flux were quantified for Reynolds numbers (Re) between 6000 and 20,000. The DW elements were positioned on two tape sides in a configuration with attack angles (θ) of 30°, 45°, and 60°. Delta winglet height ratios (h/D=0.10) and pitch ratios (p/D=0.1) were examined. Data from the current smooth or plain tubes were also analyzed for comparative purposes. According to the experimental results, the tube with this inserted has a much higher Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) than a plain tube. Both Nu and f increase as θ decrease. The DW enhances Nu and f by approximately 2.51-3.04 times and 5.21-7.16 times, respectively. The maximum TEF of 1.34 is achieved at an attack angle of 30° and a Reynolds number of 6000. The statistical correlations for Nu f and TEF were analysed and demonstrated a strong fit to the observed data, with discrepancies of ±4%, ±5% and ±3%, respectively. This design improves the conservation of energy in heat exchanger tube applications.

The study of compound heat transfer enhancement technique using dual counter twisted tapes (DCTs) together with TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids was carried out. The dual twisted tapes in form of counter-swirl tape arrangement were utilized at three twist ratios (y/w = 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5). TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids having three different volume concentrations (φ = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 %) were employed as the testing fluids. The results indicated that heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement index rose with decreasing tape twisted ratio and elevating nanofluid concentration. The TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids applied in the present work offered higher Nu than pure water (the base fluid) by 7.3–10.0 %. The application of DCT with the smallest y/w of 1.5 and TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids with the largest φ of 0.15 vol% led to the highest thermal enhancement index (TEI) of 1.53, under the same pumping power criteria. Additionally, the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and artificial neural network (ANN) were developed to predict the thermal enhancement index (TEI). It was found that the k-NN and ANN models provided maximum R2 values of 0.919 and 0.992 f, respectively.

Heat transfer and friction loss characteristics in tubular heat exchangers with gear-ring turbulators (GR-Ts) have been experimentally and numerically investigated. The GR-Ts with different free-space length ratios (SR = s/D = 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) and tooth numbers (N = 8, 16 and 24), were experimentally tested under constant wall heat flux in turbulent flow (Reynolds numbers from 6000 to 20,000). Air was used as the working fluid. The behaviors in a plain tube and the tube with a conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) were also studied for comparison. The results show that utilizing tubes with GR-Ts leads to the increases of heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss as compared to those associated with the use of a plain tube. Heat transfer enhancement and friction increase with decreasing free-space length ratio (SR) and tooth number (N). Among the investigated inserts, the conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) with free-space length ratio, SR = 1.0 give the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor at 2.7 times and 15.5 times of those of the plain tube. However, the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.3 is obtained by using the GR-Ts with the largest free-space length ratio and maximum tooth number (SR = 3.0 and N = 24). At SR = 3.0, the GR-Ts with tooth numbers (N) of 0, 8, 16 and 24 yield thermal performance factors up to 1.24, 1.26, 1.28 and 1.3, respectively. The numerical results are given for a better understanding of flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the use of GR-Ts.

An experimental investigation has been conducted for determining heat transfer enhancement by inserting helically twisted tapes, to induce co- and counter-swirl flows, (the tapes are symbolized as co-HTT and C-HTT, respectively). Tape pitch ratio (p/ D) was varied between 1.0 and 2.0, while tape width ratio (w/D) and twist ratio (y/w) were fixed at 0.2 and 3.0, respectively. The experiments were performed for fully developed turbulent flow with Reynolds number range (Re) between 6000 and 20,000, under uniform wall heat flux condition. At similar conditions, the use of Co-HTT results in lower Nusselt number and friction factor but higher thermal performance factor than that of C-HTT. Nusselt number and friction factor increase with decreasing pitch ratio, while thermal performance factor possesses opposite trend. In addition, the empirical correlations for Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor as functions of the Reynolds number (Re), Prandtl number (Pr) and tape pitch (p/D), were developed through a multi-variant linear normal regression. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal performance factor characteristics in a tube fitted with delta-winglet twisted tape, using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Influences of the oblique delta-winglet twisted tape (O-DWT) and straight delta-winglet twisted tape (S-DWT) arrangements are also described. The experiments are conducted using the tapes with three twist ratios (y/w = 3, 4 and 5) and three depth of wing cut ratios (DR = d/w = 0.11, 0.21 and 0.32) over a Reynolds number range of 3000-27,000 in a uniform wall heat flux tube. The obtained results show that mean Nusselt number and mean friction factor in the tube with the delta-winglet twisted tape increase with decreasing twisted ratio (y/w) and increasing depth of wing cut ratio (DR). It is also observed that the O-DWT is more effective turbulator giving higher heat transfer coefficient than the S-DWT. Over the range considered, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a tube with the O-DWT are, respectively, 1.04-1.64, 1.09-1.95, and 1.05-1.13 times of those in the tube with typical twisted tape (TT). Empirical correlations for predicting Nusselt number and friction factor have been employed. The predicted data are within ±10% for Nusselt number and ±10% for friction factor. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
