Item type:Item, Performance improvement in a heat exchanger tube using discrete X–V baffle (DXVB) turbulators(2024-02-01) ;Boonloi, Amnart ;Lewpiriyawong, NuttawutJedsadaratanachai, WithadaThermal performance improvement in a heating tube (HT) using discrete X–V baffle (DXVB) as turbulators is presented. The DXVB is designed with three main goals: 1. To decrease the pressure drop in the tested tube and 2. To increase the mixing quality in the heat exchanger tube and 3. To produce powerful vortex flows. Lower pressure drop, generated vortex flows and higher mixing quality will augment a heat transfer rate and thermo-hydraulic efficiency. This study examines effects of DXVB structures, DXVB distances and placements on laminar air flow and thermal structure with Reynolds number from 100 to 2000. The current problem is numerically investigated using the finite volume technique of a commercial program/code (ANSYS-FLUENT V.2022). The created model of the HT fitted with the DXVB is numerically validated. From the numerical results, the DXVB installed affects the air flow structure in the tested tube. The vortex streams are observed. The change in fluid flow influences thermal characteristics. The vortex streams destroy some parts of the thermal boundary layer and help to increase mixing quality. These perturbed thermal boundary layer (TB-layer) and better mixing quality are two important factors that contribute to convective heat transfer enhancement. In addition, the maximum heat transfer rate and pressure loss are 10.17 and 45.75 times upper than that in the circular plain tube, respectively, while the best thermal enhancement factor (TEF) of 3.09 is observed at 15b5g, +x at Re = 2000. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, HEAT TRANSFER AND FLOW PROFILES IN ROUND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER EQUIPPED WITH VARIOUS V-RINGS(2022-01-01) ;Boonloi, AmnartJedsadaratanachai, WithadaThis study numerically investigates pressure loss, heat transfer and thermal efficiency in round tube heat exchangers attached with various types of V-rings. A typical type A V-ring is compared with two types of modified V-rings (type B and C). The impacts of blockage ratios, b/D = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 for all V-ring types in the turbulent region are discussed (Re = 3000 – 20,000). Flow directions in the round pipe attached with the V-rings are varied. The V-apex setting downstream is referred to as “V-Downstream, while the V-apex setting upstream is referred to as “V-Upstream”. The flow and heat transfer profiles in the tested section are analyzed using the finite volume method (a commercial code with the SIMPLE algorithm). The thermal performance of the tested tube is measured in terms of dimensionless variables: thermal enhancement factor (TEF), Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f). Numerical results reveal that type B and C V-rings can reduce pressure drop compared with type A V-ring. Additionally, the V-Upstream of type C V-ring yields the maximum TEF of 3.10 at b/D = 0.05. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Enhanced forced convection heat transfer of a heat exchanger tube utilizing serrated-ring turbulators(2021-12-01) ;Pimsarn, M. ;Samruaisin, P. ;Eiamsa-ard, P. ;Koolnapadol, N.Promthaisong, P.Experiments were performed to study the thermohydraulic behaviors of heating tubes equipped with serrated-ring bundles as turbulators. Their thermohydraulic characteristics are reported in terms of Nusselt numbers (Nu) and friction factors (f) as well as performance in terms of a thermohydraulic performance index (TPI) at identical pumping power. Influences of serrated-ring diagonal angles (θ = 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°), pitch ratios (PR = 6.0, 8.0 and 12.0) and Re were examined. Various geometries of serrated-ring bundles can affect the laminar sub-layer disruption, creating a reversing flow, reconnecting the separated flow to the surface, and delaying the thermal/velocity boundary layer development. These are the most important mechanisms that lead to enhanced force convection heat transfer in a fluid flow. The heat transfer rate, friction loss and TPI increased with decreasing pitch ratio (PR) and serrated-ring diagonal angle (θ ). Heat transfer rate and friction factor were increased to 2.2 and 8.8 times that of a plain tube, respectively. Over the range investigated, the highest TPI, 1.16, was found using a serrated-ring bundle having θ = 15° and PR = 6.0 at Re = 4000. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Characterization of heat transfer and artificial neural networks prediction on overall performance index of a channel installed with arc-shaped baffle turbulators(2021-08-01) ;Promvonge, P. ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Chuwattanakul, V.Samruaisin, P.Influences of baffle pitch ratio (p/w) and attached angle of arc-shaped baffles (AB) on the overall performance index (OPI) of a channel installed with AB have been carefully studied. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the OPI of the channel was reported. The arc-shaped baffle (AB) showed a significant effect on the augmented heat transfer and friction loss penalty as compared to a smooth channel. As the attached arc shaped angle (θ) increased, both Nusselt number and friction factor intensified. The Nusselt number values at θ = 90° were higher than those at θ = 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80° by up to 5.8%, 3.9%, 2.3% and 2.5%, respectively. The Nusselt number increased when the p/w was raised from 4.0 to 8.0 while the opposite trend was observed when the p/w was raised from 8.0 to 12.0. The maximum OPI of 1.43 was achieved by using the baffles with θ = 90° and pitch ratio of 8.0 at Re = 4000. For the development of ANN models for predicting the OPI, it was found that the best predictive performance was (R2) of 0.99843407 for ANN model of 3-50-50-1 with Tanh-Tanh activation function at epoch of 1200. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Parametric study on thermal enhancement and flow characteristics in a heat exchanger tube installed with protruded baffle bundles(2019-11-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Ruengpayungsak, K. ;Thianpong, C. ;Pimsarn, M.Chuwattanakul, V.Influence of protruded baffle turbulators (P-BTs) on turbulent convective heat transfer rate and thermal performance behavior in round tubes was experimentally studied. The following geometrical parameters of P-BTs were considered (i) spacing ratio (SR = s/D<inf>ob</inf> = 1.0–3.0), (ii) diameter ratio (DR = d/D<inf>ob</inf> = 0.2–0.4), (iii) baffle orientation angle (θ = 0° (without rotation), 60°, 120° and 180°), and (iv) Reynolds number (Re = 6000 to 20,000). Air was used as working fluid at Prandtl number of Pr = 0.71. The plain tube data was examined for comparison with tube installed with protruded baffle turbulators (P-BTs). The experimental results obvious that increasing baffle orientation angle (θ), increasing diameter ratio (DR) and decreasing spacing ratio (SR) lead to the significant increases in heat transfer (Nu) and pressure loss (f). It can be also reveal that thermal performance (η) at a given Re considerably increases with the increasing spacing ratio (SR) and the reduction of diameter ratio (DR) and baffle orientation angle. The P-BTs with larger baffle orientation angle, induce stronger vortex ring and longitudinal vortex behind the baffles, give higher the thermal performance. Furthermore, all of empirical correlations (Nu, f and η) were derived as a function of Re and the protruded baffle turbulator (P-BT) geometry parameters including spacing ratio (SR), and protrusion-diameter ratio (DR). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Flow and thermal mechanisms in a heat exchanger tube inserted with twisted cross-baffle turbulators(2017-03-05) ;Nanan, K. ;Thianpong, C. ;Pimsarn, M. ;Chuwattanakul, V.Eiamsa-ard, S.The turbulent forced convective heat transfer behaviors in a tube inserted with baffle turbulators (typical straight baffles, straight cross-baffles, straight alternate-baffles, twisted-baffles, alternate twisted-baffles, and twisted cross-baffles) have been experimentally and numerically investigated. The influence of pitch ratio (P/D) from 1.0 to 2.0 and Reynolds numbers (Re) from 6000 to 20,000 are also reported. Among the studied turbulators, the twisted cross-baffles gave the highest heat transfer enhancement and thermal enhancement factor while the straight cross-baffles gave the lowest heat transfer rate and thermal enhancement factor. The twisted-baffles, alternate twisted-baffles, and twisted cross-baffles created high longitudinal vortex/swirl around the tube core. The strongest longitudinal vortex/swirl was achieved by the use of twisted cross-baffles. The recirculation flows were found in the tube fitted with straight baffles (a recirculation flow), straight alternate-baffles (double recirculation flows) and straight cross-baffles (quadruple recirculation flows). The heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor increased with decreasing pitch ratio (P/D) and increasing Reynolds number (Re). At the optimum condition of the smallest pitch ratio (P/D = 1.0) and the lowest Reynolds number (Re = 6000), the twisted cross-baffles offered the highest thermal enhancement factor of 1.7. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Heat transfer evaluation of turbulent flows through gear-ring elements(2017-01-01) ;Ruengpayungsak, K. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Thianpong, C. ;Pimsarn, M.Chuwattanakul, V.Heat transfer and friction loss characteristics in tubular heat exchangers with gear-ring turbulators (GR-Ts) have been experimentally and numerically investigated. The GR-Ts with different free-space length ratios (SR = s/D = 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) and tooth numbers (N = 8, 16 and 24), were experimentally tested under constant wall heat flux in turbulent flow (Reynolds numbers from 6000 to 20,000). Air was used as the working fluid. The behaviors in a plain tube and the tube with a conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) were also studied for comparison. The results show that utilizing tubes with GR-Ts leads to the increases of heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss as compared to those associated with the use of a plain tube. Heat transfer enhancement and friction increase with decreasing free-space length ratio (SR) and tooth number (N). Among the investigated inserts, the conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) with free-space length ratio, SR = 1.0 give the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor at 2.7 times and 15.5 times of those of the plain tube. However, the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.3 is obtained by using the GR-Ts with the largest free-space length ratio and maximum tooth number (SR = 3.0 and N = 24). At SR = 3.0, the GR-Ts with tooth numbers (N) of 0, 8, 16 and 24 yield thermal performance factors up to 1.24, 1.26, 1.28 and 1.3, respectively. The numerical results are given for a better understanding of flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the use of GR-Ts. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Thermal performance of tubular heat exchanger with multiple twisted-tape inserts(2015-05-01) ;Chokphoemphun, Suriya ;Pimsarn, Monsak ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe paper presents an experimental investigation on enhanced heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics by using single, double, triple, and quadruple twisted-tape inserts in a round tube having a uniform heat-fluxed wall. The investigation has been conducted in the heat exchanger tube inserted with various twisted-tape numbers for co- and counter-twist arrangements for the turbulent air flow, Reynolds number (Re) from 5300 to 24000. The typical single twisted-tape inserts at two twist ratios, y/w = 4 and 5, are used as the base case, while the other multiple twisted-tape inserts are at y/w = 4 only. The experimental results of heat transfer and pressure drop in terms of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f), respectively, reveal that Nu increases with the increment of Re and of twisted-tape number. The values of Nu for the inserted tube are in a range of 1.15-2.12 times that for the plain tube while f is 1.9-4.1 times. The thermal enhancement factor of the inserted tube under similar pumping power is evaluated and found to be above unity except for the single and the double co-twisted tapes. The quadruple counter-twisted tape insert provides the maximum thermal performance. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Heat transfer in round tube with rectangular-winglet vortex generators(2014-01-01) ;Skullong, SompolPromvonge, PongjetEffect of 30° rectangular-winglet vortex generators (WVGs) mounted in the central core of a circular tube on convection heat transfer and friction loss is experimentally investigated in the present work. The rectangular-WVGs with two different winglet-height to tube-diameter ratios (called blockage ratio, BR = b/D = 0.1 and 0.2) and three winglet-pitch to tube-diameter ratios (PR=P/D=0.5, 1.0, and 1.5) are introduced. In the experiment, air at ambient condition is passed through the uniform heat-fluxed circular tube for Reynolds numbers (Re) in a range of 5000-24,000. The use of WVGs is to generate longitudinal vortex flows in the tube. The experimental results of heat transfer and pressure loss presented in terms of Nusselt number and friction factor are compared between the inserted and the smooth tubes. It is found that the BR and PR provide a significant effect on the thermal performance of the test tube. The results reveal that at smaller PR, the WVG with BR=0.2 provides the highest heat transfer and friction factor but the one with BR=0.2, PR=1.5 yields the best thermal performance. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Thermal performance of turbulent flow in a solar air heater channel with rib-groove turbulators(2014-01-01) ;Skullong, Sompol ;Kwankaomeng, Sutapat ;Thianpong, ChinarukPromvonge, PongjetThe paper presents an experimental study on turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics in a solar air heater channel fitted with combined wavy-rib and groove turbulators. The experiments are performed by controlling the airflow rate to obtain Reynolds numbers in the range of 4000 to 21,000. To produce recirculation flow in the tested channel having a constant heat-flux on the upperwall only, the triangular wavy ribs are placed repeatedly on the tested grooved channelwalls. Three test cases of different rib-pitch to channel-height ratios (PR = P/ H = 0.5, 1 and 2) with a single rib-to-channel height ratio (BR = b/H = 0.25) are introduced in the present work. The wavy ribs are placed with the attack angle of 45° relative to main flow direction. There are three types of rib arrangements, namely, rib-groove on the upper wall only, inline rib-groove, and staggered ribinline groove on two principal walls. The experimental result reveals that the combined rib-groove on both the upper and lowerwalls of the test channel provides the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor in comparison with the smooth channel with/without ribs. However, the ribbed-grooved upper wall at PR = 0.5 yields the highest thermal performance. The combined rib-groove turbulator is found to be considerably higher thermal performance than the groove alone. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
