Item type:Publication, Rain attenuation of satellite link in Ku-band at Bangkok(2005-12-01) ;Boonchuk, T. ;Hemmakorn, N.; ;Iida, M.Tanaka, K.Rain attenuation is a major factor to degrade the system performance in a frequency above 10 GHz. This paper presents a statistical analysis of the rainfall rate and the rain attenuation data on satellite to ground propagation path. By measuring 12.7-GHz beacon signal attenuation from JCSAT satellite and the rainfall rate continuously. Yearly cumulative distribution functions were then compared to predicted models. The Crane Global model for the rain zone H provides overestimated predicted values to the measured ones. For the rain zone G, the Crane Global model provides close values to ITU-R model; both are smaller than the measured ones. © 2005 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, An inter-track interference mitigation technique using partial ITI estimation in patterned media storage(2009-01-01) ;Myint, Lin M.M.; Tantaswadi, PrinyaThe readback signal of patterned media storage (PMS) is corrupted by a two-dimensional interference consisting of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-track interference (ITI). In this paper, we apply the turbo equalization to mitigate the ITI effects. The codeword of the outer code is divided and then written on three separate tracks. After the first iteration, the bit estimates from the outer code provide partial ITI estimates for the branch metric computation in the soft-output viterbi algorithm (SOVA) detectors. Unlike previous works, the number of states of the channel trellis is due to the ISI only since the ITI information is not embedded in the parallel branches. When compared with the modified SOVA detectors with multi-parallel branches, simulation results show that a significant performance gain is achieved by our proposed method. © 2009 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Modeling and measurement of airplane flutter phenomena on TV broadcasting signal(2008-06-01) ;Wongkeeratikul, A.; ;Noppanakeepong, S. ;Leelaruji, N.Hemmakorn, N.This paper presents a novel approach to model TV signal due to airplane flutter phenomena. The three components of the modeling are based on 1) Bistatic radar cross sections (RCS) of an ellipsoid, 2) 3-dimensional geometry consideration technique to calculate the distance difference between direct and reflected waves due to airplane, and 3) Ray theory, based on physical and geometrical consideration. Unlike previous works, the model takes into account of realistic parameters such flying height, distance from the airport, flying angle, altitude, aircraft body type and others. The simulation results are then compared with measurement results at 60.75 MHz and 208.75 MHz. Item type:Publication, Bi-directional timing recovery for magnetic recording systems(2009-12-01); ; Kovintavewat, PiyaMagnetic recording systems employ conventional timing recovery to synchronize the sampler with the readback signal. However, conventional timing recovery does not perform well when the timing error is large. This paper proposes the bidirectional timing recovery, which utilizes conventional timing recovery to sample the readback signal both in forward direction and in backward direction. The outputs of these two operations are averaged and sent them to the Viterbi detector to determine the most likely input sequence. Results indicate that the bidirectional timing recovery performs better than conventional timing recovery, especially when the timing error is large. ©2009 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The effects of sumatra-andaman earthquake on total ionospheric electron content (TEC) and ionospheric scintillation of GPS signal in thailand(2005-12-01) ;Theerapatpaiboon, P. ;Leelaruji, N. ;Hemmakorn, N.This paper presents the effects of Sumatra-Andaman earthquake (26 December 2004) on the total ionospheric electron content (TEC) by using the TEC Meter (JAVAD) installed at KMITL. From the results, we found that the total ionospheric electron content enhancement at the time of this earthquake is higher than other days about 7 TEC units. Furthermore, the study includes the effect of this phenomenon on GPS signal (1575.45 MHz) by employing S<inf>4</inf> index and σ<inf>φ</inf> (60sec) to identify the severity of amplitude scintillation and phase scintillation, respectively. From the observation, we can conclude that TEC variation is the cause of ionospheric scintillation leading to the position error on GPS about 8 meters. © 2005 IEEE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Turbo product codes for optical recording systems(2005-12-01)Since the introduction of read-only compact disc (CD-ROM) in the early 80s, optical recording has found its place in mainstream data storage. They are quite a success as removable media particularly in the entertainment and data storage industry. As explosive amount of information in the 90s fueled an ever increasing demand for data storage, further development of optical recording systems in terms of higher capacity, transfer rate and areal density have become major goals in research and development and commercial communities. An evolution of "Blu-ray" and its rival " High-density DVD (HD-DVD)" have recently been envisioned as the next generation optical disc to achieve the recording of a two-hour program in digital HiVision. The standards agree on the capacity of 25 GB with improvement of numerical aperture (NA) and the wavelength alone. As of September 2004, HD-DVD aims to provide 15-GB single-layer disc, and 30-GB dual-layer disc, while Blu-ray aims for upto 27-GB and 54 GB for single-layer and dual-layer discs, respectively [1]. Current formats such as Read-only/Rewritable compact discs (CD-R/RW) and read-only/rewritable digital video discs (DVD-R/RW) are based on storing binary symbols on the optical media. The technology path from CD to DVD employs combined signal processing and coding techniques such as Reed- Solomon codes or RS codes and Runlength-limited codes or RLL codes. To achieve the goal of even higher storage capacity, more sophisticated signal processing and coding techniques would be required. In the early 1990s, there was an evolution of the field of error-correction codes with the introduction of "turbo codes" [2]. For additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the novel code provides coding gain that almost reaches the theoretical Shannon capacity. This planted the seed for active research and development in the area of iterative decoding, variants of turbo codes, and turbo equalization in many communication systems. The advanced signal processing and coding such as turbo codes and turbo-like codes thus have a potential of providing additional coding gain as required in the future generations of high-density optical storage systems. In this chapter, the focus is on the use of a variant of turbo codes so called "Turbo Product Codes" [3] in multileveled (ML) optical recording systems. © 2005 Springer. The characteristic of ionospheric scintillation on GPS signal are analyzed by employing S<inf>4</inf> index to identify the amplitude scintillation and σ<inf>ø</inf>(60 sec) to identify the phase scintillation, From the results, we found that the ionospheric scintillation phenomena impact on the GPS signal leading to the error in the global positioning system, differ from the non-scintillation period more than 20 meters. © 2006 ICASE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Reduced-Complexity Turbo Equalization for High-Density Magnetic Recording Systems(2003-01-01); ;Lopes, RenatoMcLaughlin, Steven W.This paper considers a decision-feedback-equalizer (DFE)-based soft decision detector as an alternative for the Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (BCJR) front-end for a coded magnetic recording channel. In previous work, a bidirectional-arbitrated DFE (BAD) was shown to perform in between a BCJR detector and a minimum mean-square error DFE. We propose a soft-output BAD (S-BAD) which takes advantage of the original structure and is suitable for iterative decoding when used with outer codes. Item type:Publication, Performance of digital modulation in double Nakagami-m fading channels with MRC diversity(2009-01-01) ;Wongtrairat, WannareeIn this paper, we derive the average bit error probability (BEP) for common digital modulation schemes and the outage probability of double Nakagami-m channels with MRC diversity. First, the probability density function (PDF) and moment generating function (MGF) of received signal with maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver diversity are computed. The derived MGF results are simplified in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function<inf>2</inf>F<inf>0</inf>. The derived BEP expressions find applications in existing wireless systems such as satellite mobile communication system, mobile-to-mobile communication system and multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system. In addition, the obtained general MGF expression considers combined Rayleigh × Nakagami-m, double Rayleigh, single Rayleigh, single Nakagami-m, and non-fading or additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels as special cases. The simulation results agree well with the theoretical results. Item type:Publication, Comparison between foF2 observations and IRI-2001 model predictions at Thailand equatorial latitude station(2008-10-06) ;Wichaipanich, N. ;Boonchuk, T. ;Leelaruji, N. ;Hemmakorn, N.In this paper, the comparison between the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) observations and international Reference Ionospheric (IRI) model predictions is presented. The data used for this study are obtained from bottomside ionogram recorded by the FM/CW ionosonde at Chumphon campus of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (latitude 10.72°N and longitude 99.37°E), Thailand, located near the magnetic equator. The measurement data coverage from January to December of a low solar activity year (2006) is analyzed based on the diurnal, seasonal variation and then compared with IRI-2001 model predictions. Generally, the foF2 obtained from the IRI (URSI and CCIR) model closely follows observed foF2 values. Comparing the results of URSI and CCIR options for foF2, we find that for low solar activity, both the URSI and CCIR options of the IRI model give foF2 values close to the ones measured at Chumphon, but the CCIR results produce smaller range of deviation than the URSI results. All comparative studies give feedback for new improvements of CCIR and URSI IRI models. ©2008 IEEE.
