    A soft-switched ac-dc symmetrical boost converter with power factor correction
    (2007-12-01) ;
    Songboonkaew, J.
    This paper presents a soft-switched ac-dc symmetrical boost converter with power factor correction. The rectifier is modified boost voltage that is well suited for low line input applications and operated with half of the switch voltage stress than those found in standard boost converter. Soft-switching in the boost converter is achieved under Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) turn on and Zero-Current Switching (ZCS) at turn on, quasi resonant technique. In this paper, the operation principle and operation mode are demonstrated. The experimental results obtained from a prototype are agreement with the simulation ones. © 2007 IEEE.

    This paper presents the design and construction of a plasma cutting machine by using a half-bridge dc/dc converter for negative direct current power supply and initial exicting are by a high voltage high frequency circuit. when the gas passes a torch electrod, it will explode to be plasma are and transfer to the work piece. This process has been designed for an output power of plasma cutting machine at 2 kW by employing Isolate Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) as switches. The switching frequency is 20 kHz. The plasma cutting machine can cut 1 mm of steel. When compared with a linear transformer plasma cutting machine, the designed plasma cutting machine has an efficiency quite similar. In addition, the plasma cutting machine is small, light, and compatible. © 2007 IEEE.

    This paper presents the design and construction of a plasma cutting machine by using a half-bridge dc/dc converter for negative direct current power supply and initial exciting arc by a high voltage high frequency circuit. When the gas passes a torch electrode, it will explode to be plasma arc and transfer to the work piece. The unique research work proposes the high voltage high frequency excitation on all of wide range for cutting metal. This process has been designed for an output power of plasma cutting machine at 2 kW by employing Isolate Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) as switches. The switching frequency is 20 kHz. The plasma cutting machine can cut 1 mm thickness of steel. When compared with a linear transformer plasma cutting machine, Super Air Plasma at 2.2 kW rated, the designed plasma cutting machine has an efficiency quite similar. In addition, the plasma cutting machine is small, light, and compatible. It has also a power and pressure less than the other one. © 2008 IEEE.

    Evaluation of conducted EMI emissions on ZVZCS PWM dc-dc converters with a fixed switching frequency
    (2005-12-01) ;
    Songboonkaew, J.
    This paper presents a comparative study between a Zero-Voltage and Zero-Current Switching Full-Bridge (ZVZCS-FB) dc-dc converter and ZVZCS-Three-Level (TL) dc-dc converter. Both converters uses Phase-Shifted PulseWidth Modulation (PS-PWM) strategy. The paper describes the operating characteristics and analyzes the performance of both converters, includes a comparison of conducted ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) emissions from both converters, and provides experimental results that are in good agreement with the theoretical ones. © 2005 IEEE.

    Structured robust loop shaping control for HIMAT system using PSO
    (2009-04-13) ; ;
    Parnichkun, Manukid
    Robust loop shaping control is a feasible method for designing a robust controller; however, the controller designed by this method is complicated and difficult to implement practically. To overcome this problem, in this paper, a new design technique of a fixed-structure robust loop shaping controller for a highly maneuverable airplane, HIMAT, is proposed. The performance and robust stability conditions of the designed system satisfying H<inf>∞</inf> loop shaping control are formulated as the objective function in the optimization problem. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is adopted to solve this problem and to achieve the control parameters of the proposed controller. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach is numerically efficient and leads to performance comparable to that of the other method. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

    Efficiency improvement of converter for switched reluctance motor drives at low speed operation
    (2009-12-01)

    ;
    This paper presents a method to improve the efficiency of a standard asymmetric half-bridge converter for 3 phase, 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives at low speed operation. At that speed range, the SRM converter operates mainly in current chopping modes either hard chopping or soft chopping control. This work emphasizes on minimizing the main power losses during the turn-off interval of each cycle. Once the optimum size of snubber capacitor is obtained from calculation, such snubber capacitors are paralleled with chopping switches in order to reduce rate of voltage rise across those switches and ultimately their switching losses can be decreased. The developed dynamic model based on measured data of flux linkage and static torque characteristics of the SRM has been used for simulation in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results have satisfactorily verified the validity of the proposed concept.

    A comparison of zero-voltage and zero-current switching phase-shifted PWM DC-DC converters
    (2005-12-01) ;
    Songboonkaew, J.
    This paper presents a comparative study between an improved Full-Bridge(FB) Zero-Voltage and Zero-Current Switching (ZVZCS) Phase-Shifted PulseWidth Modulation (PS-PWM) dc-dc converter and an improved Three-Level(TL) ZVZCS PS-PWM dc-dc converter. Both converters operate at fixed frequency and achieve zero-voltage-switching on the leading leg of FB or outer switches of TL, and also achieve zero-current-switching on lagging leg of FB or inner switches of TL. To compare the improved FB-ZVZCS-PS-PWM dc-dc converter, the improved TL-ZVZCS-PS-PWM dc-dc converter is that the voltage across the switches is the half of the input voltage. In addition, the operational intervals and analysis are presented. Both prototypes operating at 30 kHz, rated at 300 V input voltage of FB and at 600 V input voltage of TL, and 1 kW output power at 42 V rated output voltage, have been constructed and tested in laboratory. © 2005 IEEE.

    Comparison of switching strategies for an ultrasonic cleaner
    (2008-10-06)

    ;
    This paper presents the comparison of Control Signal Patterns in ultrasonic cleaner by using the microcontroller for generating Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM), Phase-Shift PWM control (PS-PWM) and Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) patterns. These control patterns are fed in the full-bridge inverter to drive the ultrasonic transducers. The resonant frequency of 30 kHz is tested in order to find the efficiency of ultrasonic cleaner which one should be the best. Ultrasonic transducer can generate ultrasonic wave to transfer electrical energy to mechanical energy. Cavitation and implosion are occurred in liquid when ultrasonic wave travels through liquid medium in the process of cleaning. © 2008 IEEE.

    In this paper, we propose a new technique used to design a robust controller that is not as high-order and complicated as the ones designed by conventional <inf>∞</inf> loop shaping method. The proposed algorithm is called Genetic Algorithm (GA) based fixed-structure H <inf>∞</inf> loop shaping control. In the approach, GA is adopted to solve the H <inf>∞</inf> loop shaping design problem under a structure specified controller. The performance and robustness of the proposed controller are investigated in a buck-boost converter in comparison with the controllers designed by conventional H <inf>∞</inf> loop shaping and conventional ISE method. Results of simulations demonstrate the advantages of the proposed controller in terms of simple structure and robustness against plant perturbations and disturbances. Experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © 2009 Springer Netherlands.
