Item type:Publication, Robust voltage stabilization in an isolated wind-diesel power system using pso based-fixed structure H∞ loop shaping control(2009-07-30) ;Vachyirasricirikul, Sitthidet; It is well known that the power system controller designed by H∞ control is complicated, high order and impractical. In power system applications, practical structures such as proportional integral derivative (PID) etc., are widely used, because of their simple structure, less number of tuning parameters and low-order. However, tuning of controller parameters to achieve a good performance and robustness is based on designer's experiences. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a fixed structure robust H∞ loop shaping control to design Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) for robust stabilization of voltage fluctuation in an isolated wind-diesel hybrid power system. The structure of the robust controller of SVC and AVR is specified by a PID controller. In the system modeling, a normalized coprime factorization is applied to represent possible unstructured uncertainties in the power system such as variation of system parameters, generating and loading conditions etc. Based on the H∞ loop shaping, the performance and robust stability conditions are formulated as the optimization problem. The particle swarm optimization is applied to solve for PID control parameters of SVC and AVR simultaneously. Simulation studies confirm the control effect and robustness of the proposed control. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Intelligent photovoltaic farms for robust frequency stabilization in multi-area interconnected power system based on PSO-based optimal Sugeno fuzzy logic control(2015-02-01) ;Sa-ngawong, NattapolCurrently, the grid-connected large PV farms are extensively installed in power systems. Nevertheless, in addition to the load change, the intermittent power output of PV farms may lead to the serious problem of the system frequency fluctuation. To handle this problem, this paper proposes a new design of Sugeno fuzzy logic controller based on particle swarm optimization (PSO-SFLC) of intelligent PV farms for the frequency stabilization in a multi-area interconnected power system. To handle various scenarios, the frequency deviations and solar insolations are used as input signals of the PSO-SFLC. The output signal of the PSO-SFLC is a command signal for adjusting PV output power. The output power of PV is controlled by the PSO-SFLC to meet the load demand so that the system frequency fluctuation can be suppressed. Without the difficulty of trial and error, the optimal input and output membership functions, and control rules of PSO-SFLC are automatically achieved by PSO. Simulation study in a three-area loop interconnected power system with large PV farms elucidates that the frequency stabilizing performance and robustness of the PV equipped with the PSO-SFLC is much superior to that of the PV with the SFLC and the PV with the maximum power point tracking control in scenarios with various solar insolations and loading conditions. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Application of electrolyzer system to enhance frequency stabilization effect of microturbine in a microgrid system(2009-09-01) ;Vachirasricirikul, Sitthidet; It is well known that the power output of microturbine can be controlled to compensate for load change and alleviate the system frequency fluctuations. Nevertheless, the microturbine may not adequately compensate rapid load change due to its slow dynamic response. Moreover, when the intermittent power generations from wind power and photovoltaic are integrated into the system, they may cause severe frequency fluctuation. In order to study the fast dynamic response, this paper applies electrolyzer system to absorb these power fluctuations and enhance the frequency control effect of microturbine in the microgrid system. The robust coordinated controller of electrolyzer and microturbine for frequency stabilization is designed based on a fixed-structure H<inf>∞</inf> loop shaping control. Simulation results exhibit the robustness and stabilizing effects of the proposed coordinated electrolyzer and microturbine controllers against system parameters variation and various operating conditions. Item type:Publication, Wide area robust centralized PSO-based specified structure H∞ power system damping controller design considering uncertainties in time delay and system parameters(2013-02-15)It is well known that the time delay due to the wide area phasor measurement may cause a malfunction of wide area centralized control of power system damping controller (PSDC) and system instability eventually. Nevertheless, the uncertainties due to time delay and system parameters have never been considered in the previous researches of PSDC design. To tackle this problem, a wide area robust centralized particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based specified structure H<inf>∞</inf> PSDC design taking uncertainties due to communication delay and system parameters into account is proposed in this paper. Without explicit mathematic equations, the inverse input multiplicative model is applied to represent the unstructured uncertainties. The structure of PSDC is the practical 2nd order lead/lag compensator. To automatically tune the control parameters, the optimization based on an enhancement of damping effect and robust stability margin is achieved by PSO. To evaluate the proposed design technique, two examples of robust centralized PSDC, i.e., power system stabilizer and thyristor control series capacitor are demonstrated in a two-area four-machine interconnected power system,. Simulation study confirm that the proposed robust centralized PSDC is much superior to the conventional centralized PSDC in terms of stabilizing effect and robustness against uncertainties due to time delay and system parameters. © 2013 ICIC International. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Robust controller design of heat pump and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle for frequency control in a smart microgrid based on specified-structure mixed H2/H∞ control technique(2011-01-01) ;Vachirasricirikul, SitthidetThis paper proposes a new robust controller design of heat pump (HP) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for frequency control in a smart microgrid (MG) system with wind farm. The intermittent power generation from wind farm causes severe frequency fluctuation in the MG. To alleviate frequency fluctuation, the smart control of power consumption of HP and the power charging of PHEV in the customer side can be performed. The controller structure of HP and PHEV is a proportional integral derivative (PID) with single input. To enhance the performance and robustness against system uncertainties of the designed controller, the particle swarm optimization based-mixed H<inf>2</inf>/H<inf>∞</inf> control is applied to design the PID controllers of HP and PHEV. Simulation studies confirm the superior robustness and frequency control effect of the proposed HP and PHEV controllers in comparison to the conventional controller. © 2011. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Application of multiple tabu search algorithm to solve dynamic economic dispatch considering generator constraints(2008-04-01) ;Pothiya, Saravuth; Kongprawechnon, WareeThis paper presents a new optimization technique based on a multiple tabu search algorithm (MTS) to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (ED) problem with generator constraints. In the constrained dynamic ED problem, the load demand and spinning reserve capacity as well as some practical operation constraints of generators, such as ramp rate limits and prohibited operating zone are taken into consideration. The MTS algorithm introduces additional mechanisms such as initialization, adaptive searches, multiple searches, crossover and restarting process. To show its efficiency, the MTS algorithm is applied to solve constrained dynamic ED problems of power systems with 6 and 15 units. The results obtained from the MTS algorithm are compared to those achieved from the conventional approaches, such as simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), tabu search (TS) algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The experimental results show that the proposed MTS algorithm approaches is able to obtain higher quality solutions efficiently and with less computational time than the conventional approaches. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Structured robust control for a Pmdc motor speed controller using swarm optimization and mixed sensitivity approach(2010-12-01); This paper proposes a new technique for designing a robust DC motor speed controller based on the concepts of fixed-structure robust controller and a mixed sensitivity method. Performance is specified by selecting the closed-loop objective weight, and uncertainties caused by the parameter changes of motor resistance, motor inductance and load are used to formulate the multiplicative uncertainty weight. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is adopted to solve the optimization problem and find the optimal structured controller. The proposed technique can solve the problem of complicated and high order controller of conventional full order H <inf>∞</inf> controller and also retains the robust performance of conventional H <inf>∞</inf> optimal control. The performance and robustness of the proposed speed controller are investigated in a Permanent Magnet DC (PMDC) motor in comparison with the controllers designed by conventional H <inf>∞</inf> optimal control and conventional ISE method. Results of simulations demonstrate the advantages of the proposed controller in terms of simple structure and robustness against plant perturbations and disturbances. Experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Specified structure mixed H2=H∞ control-based robust frequency stabilization in a smart grid by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles(2013-01-16)In the future smart grid, the penetration of wind power tends to increase significantly. This may cause the tie-line power and frequency fluctuations in the power grid. On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are highly expected to be installed in the customer side. The bidirectional power control of PHEV can be applied to stabilize the power and frequency fluctuations. This paper proposes the specified structure mixed H<inf>2</inf>=H<inf>∞</inf> control design of bidirectional power controller of PHEV for robust frequency stabilization of the smart grid with large wind farms. System uncertainties are represented by the multiplicative perturbation model. The structure of power controller is specified as a proportional integral (PI) with single input. The PI parameters optimization problem is formulated based on the enhancement of control performance and robustness against system uncertainties. Without the difficulty of weighting functions selection as in a mixed H<inf>2</inf>=H<inf>∞</inf> control, the PI parameters are automatically tuned by particle swarm optimization. Simulation results confirm that the proposed robust controller is much superior to the conventional controller in terms of control performance and robustness against various uncertainties. © 2013 ICIC International. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Robust frequency stabilization in a microgrid system(2009-12-16) ;Vachirasricirikul, S.; ; Chaiyatham, T.This paper proposes a new design of a robust control and monitoring system (RCMS) for robust stabilization of frequency fluctuation in a microgrid (MG) system. In MG system, the power sources consists of wind power (WP), photovoltaic (PV), microturbine (MT) and fuel cell (FC). Due to WP, PV and load fluctuations, the frequency stabilization of RCMS is performed by adjusting the power outputs of MT and electrolyzer system (ES) in both islanding and interconnected utility grid operations. The structure of MT and ES controllers is a proportional integral (PI). To enhance the robustness of designed controllers against system uncertainties, controller parameters of MT and ES are concurrently tuned by the particle swarm optimization based on a specified-structure H<inf>∞</inf> loop shaping control. Simulation results display the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed RCMS against system parameters variation and several operating conditions. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Simultaneous control of frequency fluctuation and battery SOC in a smart grid using LFC and EV controllers based on optimal MIMO-MPC(2017-03-01) ;Pahasa, JonglakThis paper proposes a simultaneous control of frequency deviation and electric vehicles (EVs) battery state of charge (SOC) using load frequency control (LFC) and EV controllers. In order to provide both frequency stabilization and SOC schedule near optimal performance within the whole operating regions, a multiple-input multiple-output model predictive control (MIMO-MPC) is employed for the coordination of LFC and EV controllers. The MIMO-MPC is an effective model- based prediction which calculates future control signals by an optimization of quadratic programming based on the plant model, past manipulate, measured disturbance, and control signals. By optimizing the input and output weights of the MIMO-MPC using particle swarm optimization (PSO), the optimal MIMO-MPC for simultaneous control of the LFC and EVs, is able to stabilize the frequency fluctuation and maintain the desired battery SOC at the certain time, effectively. Simulation study in a two-area interconnected power system with wind farms shows the effectiveness of the proposed MIMO-MPC over the proportional integral (PI) controller and the decentralized vehicle to grid control (DVC) controller.
