    Changes of cut orchid quality after fumigation with clove and cinnamon essential oils

    Clove and cinnamon essential oils have been recently considered as effective alternative fumigants against thrips and mealybug, which are the major pests infecting exported orchid cut flowers in many countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate effects of clove and cinnamon essential oils in non-targeted fumigation on Dendrobium orchid cut flower. Changes in L<sup>∗</sup>, a<sup>∗</sup> and b<sup>∗</sup> values, weight loss, polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activity, total phenolics and anthocyanin content were determined. All fumigations in this study were conducted using the essential oils at the concentrations of 0.0, 3.0 and 6.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> for 1 h with 15-min air circulation in 1-m<sup>3</sup> glass chambers. The effects of eugenol under the same conditions were examined. The samples were evaluated prior to the treatments, immediately after the treatments, and 3 d after the treatments at 25±1°C. The results showed a decrease of L<sup>∗</sup> and a<sup>∗</sup> values, and anthocyanin content in all groups, while b<sup>∗</sup> value, percentage of weight loss and total phenolic content increased. PPO activity did not change throughout the sampling period. Remarkably, the orchids fumigated with clove and cinnamon essential oils, and eugenol at 3.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> did not differ from the control. However, fumigations at 6.0 ml/m<sup>3</sup> reduced flower quality, leading to increased weight loss and petal discoloration.

    The roles of calcium lactate on bruised damage in papaya fruit

    Bruise damage reduces postharvest quality and it was rejected by consumer. Lack detail about bruise mechanism reported in papaya fruit, the prevention and reduction of postharvest loss were limited. The tissue softening as a result in the change of cell wall solubility and depolymerization including changes in physical properties were following bruise damaged. The maintaining cell wall integrity by calcium lactate application before bruising was tested. Papaya fruits were non-dipped or dipped in 2% calcium lactate solution at 55°C for 5 minutes, then air dried at room temperature for 1 hour. Two groups of fruit sample were separated; one group was impacted from height level at 75 cm while the other was nonimpacted. The result showed that bruise treatment reduced skin lightness, chroma and hue angle especially in 'Khak dam' papaya, but could maintain by calcium lactate application. This treatment also preserved the reduction of fruit firmness by 4 days concomitant with the solubilization of pectin during bruising was reduced by calcium lactate treatment. Water-, Na <inf>2</inf> CO <inf>3</inf> - and potassium hydroxide-soluble fraction were low in calcium lactate treatment both with and without bruise damage. Non-significant different between non-dipped and dipped in calcium lactate in TSS, skin color development and fresh weight loss in bruise treatment. However, calcium lactate treatment reduced the increase in bruise area of 20 and 10% in 'Khak dam' and 'Holland' papaya, respectively. Fruit decay incidence was 5% low in fruit treated with calcium lactate following bruise damage than non-dipped.

    Rapid evaluation of the texture properties of melon (Cucumis melo L. Var. reticulata cv. Green net) using near infrared spectroscopy
    The near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as the rapid nondestructive method was aimed to be applied for determination of the texture properties of melon intact fruit and pulp including initial firmness, rupture force, average firmness, rupture distance, toughness, average penetrating force and penetrating energy. The data from the reference method of texture analyzer were correlated with the NIR spectral data. The result showed that, only the two properties including rupture force and penetrating force in pulp could be predicted by NIR spectroscopy technique. The determination coefficient of validation (r<sup>2</sup>) for prediction of rupture force and penetrating force in the pulp of melon using intact fruit spectra were 0.850 and 0.845, respectively. The r<sup>2</sup>, for prediction of rupture force and penetrating force in the pulp of melon using pulp spectra were 0.813 and 0.778, respectively. This indicated that the NIR spectroscopy protocol developed here was useful for research works such as breeding and postharvest research, the melon processing factory and also the import and export of melon. Practical applications: The near infrared spectroscopy protocol developed for determination of rupture force and penetrating force in pulp using intact fruit spectra as a nondestructive method will be useful for research works such as breeding and postharvest research, the melon processing factory and also the import and export of melon. There are also the protocol developed using pulp spectra can be used for texture determination of fresh-cut melon.

    Effects of insecticidal essential oil fumigations on physiological changes in cut Dendrobium sonia orchid flower

    This study investigated essential oil (EO) formulas with high insecticidal properties, but low physiological impacts on cut Dendrobium Sonia orchid flower. Fumigation toxicities of EOs from 18 medicinal plants at 2.0 and 3.0 μl/L air were examined against adults of thrips (Frankliniella schultzei) and larvae of mealybug (Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi). The effective EO mixtures, optimal concentrations fumigation and air circulation periods were investigated. Then, field experiments were conducted, and changes in L*, a* and b* values, percentages of weight loss and anthocyanin contents of the EO-fumigated flower were observed and compared to the methyl bromide and control fumigations. The results showed that clove and cinnamon demonstrated high insecticidal properties against the insects (>85% mortality) and low physiological changes in the flower. In particular, fumigations with 2.0 μl/L air of a mixture between clove and cinnamon EOs (1:3) for 3 hr with 15- min air circulation demonstrated the highest thrips and mealybug mortalities (92.2 and 74.6%, respectively). The EO fumigation formula presented less impact on color change and anthocyanin content than methyl bromide fumigation which showed higher reduction of anthocyanin content (22.9 mg/100g FW) when compared to the control (13.6 mg/100g FW). The percentages of weight loss in the flower fumigated with EO, control and methyl bromide were about 10.4, 7.9 and 14.8%, respectively. In general, applications of EO at higher concentrations resulted in higher insect mortalities and more impacts on physiological changes which involved anthocyanin degradation and higher percentages of weight loss. Further studies might consider applications of clove and cinnamon EO formulas via other methods. In addition, revisions of the EO mixture can also be examined in order to obtain the most effective and environment friendly insect management approach.

    Insecticidal activity of essential oil formulas and their physiological effects on eggplant

    This study examined fumigation toxicity of 18 medicinal plant essential oils (EOs) against adult of aphid (Aphid gossypii) and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Then, non-target effects of the EO mixtures on physiological changes of eggplant (Solanum melongena) were tested. The insecticidal property and physiological toxicity of the fumigation formulas were also examined and compared to methyl bromide (MB) fumigation. The results showed that the eggplant fumigated with clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) EOs mixture at the ratio of 1:3 (Cl1Le3) showed no significant physiological changes when compared to the control treatment. The formula resulted in similarly high mortalities (82-100%) of both insects when compared to MB. However, MB fumigation caused complete senescence appeared before day 3 observations. On the contrary, the eggplant fumigated with Cl1Le3 at 3 μL/L air showed no differences in the physiological changes when compared to the control throughout the 9-day examinations.

    The correlation between total phenol and antioxidant capacity of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) with varying flesh color

    The study established baseline data on the total phenol content and antioxidant activities of 36 sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivars with distinctive flesh color (white, yellow, orange and purple) grown in Pijit Province in the northern part of Thailand. Total phenol were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteau method while antioxidant capacity in sweet potato flesh was measured by 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Total phenol content ranged from 75.47- 1,283.37 ?g gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g-1 dry weight. The highest phenolic content was found in cultivar 'PJ25' (purple fleshed) and lowest in cultivar 'PJ18' (orange fleshed). Antioxidant capacity in different flesh color ranged from 72.1-84.56% of DPPH inhibition. The highest total phenol was concomitant with the highest antioxidant activity which was 84.56% for DPPH radical scavenging activity on a dry weight in cultivar 'PJ25'. Significant (*P<0.05) positive correlation was observed between total phenol content and antioxidant capacity (%inhibition) for DPPH radical scavenging activity in white (R2=0.652), yellow (R2=0.5386), orange (R2=0.6518) and purple (R2=0.899) fleshed sweet potatoes.

    Quality change on holy basil after fumigation with insecticidal essential oil formula from clove and cinnamon

    The essential oil formula from clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum bejolghota) at the ratio of 1:3 (Cl1Ci3) has been recently considered as an effective alternative fumigant against thrips (Thrips palmi) and aphid (Aphis gossypii), which are the major pests attacking exported holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) in Thailand. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the C1Ci3 formula used as fumigant on physical quality of holy basil compared to methyl bromide application. The percentage of insect mortality and change in L*, a* and b* values, as well as weight loss of holy basil, were determined. All fumigations in this study were conducted using the formula Cl1Ci3 at the concentrations of 0.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mL m<sup>-3</sup> for 2 h with 15-min air circulation in 1 m<sup>3</sup> fumigation chamber and compared to methyl bromide at 20 g m<sup>-3</sup> (recommended concentration). The observations of insect mortality were conducted at 24 h after treatment. The holy basil samples were evaluated prior to the treatments, immediately after the treatments, and after 3 and 6 days at 25±1°C. The methyl bromide fumigation showed 100% mortality of all insects and its efficacy was significantly higher than that of the Cl1Ci3 formula (73.9-96.0%). Leaf burning was observed immediately after methyl bromide fumigations. On the other hand, no significant physiological changes were observed on plants fumigated with the Cl1Ci3 formula, as compared to the control.

    Change in fruit quality and cell wall polysaccharides in bruised papaya cultivars 'Khak dum' and 'Holland'

    Papaya bruising is a major postharvest problem that substantially reduces fruit quality. During the process of ripening, Thai papaya 'Khak dum' is softer than imported cultivar 'Holland' (Pak Mai Lai). 'Khak dum' is more susceptible to bruising than 'Holland'. Due to lack of detailed knowledge about bruising mechanisms, effective bruise prevention is difficult. Pulp firmness at bruised site were approximately 60 and 30 N before impact then rapidly dropped to about 30 and 20 N after 2 days following impact, while it dropped to about 45 and 28 N in control for 'Khak dum' and 'Holland', respectively. The bruised tissues expanded, became darker in color to larger bruise areas of 20.42 and 24.09 cm2, respectively and decayed 2 and 4 days following impact. Respiration rate also increased by 1.5-times in 24 h following impact then declined. Soluble solids content was not significantly different between bruised and control fruit, but slightly increased by the end of storage. Pulp softening at the bruise area was associated with the increase in water soluble pectin fraction approximately 3 and 1.5 times as compared to the control in 'Khak dum' and 'Holland', respectively, while CDTA and 4 M KOH soluble fractions slightly decreased by the end of storage. Na2CO3 slightly increased in 'Khak dum' while it decreased in 'Holland'.
