    An Object-Oriented Agent Framework for SCADA

    The future of factory automation is certainly Industry 4.0, where SCADA software is its essential element. A more advanced SCADA software, namely “intelligent SCADA,” is needed to be developed to support Industry 4.0. In this paper, we shall investigate an intelligent SCADA software by proposing an object-oriented agent framework for it. The proposed framework is modeled entirely using the object-oriented approach; with its merit, we can represent and reason about machines’ state and change, and we can also model and reason about object language and metalanguage of what we call “a cyber-physical system.” Moreover, we gain a great deal of benefit from object-oriented concepts for this intelligent SCADA, such as inheritance, polymorphism, persistence, object-oriented design patterns and so on. We shall argue that our approach captures the notion of a cyber-physical system and a digital twin naturally as well as embraces logic fundamentally. The framework was developed, as a web-based SCADA application, using Python on the server side and JavaScript together with HTML on the client side.

    An agent framework for home energy management system

    A smart home is a promising green technology not only to save people money on their electricity bills but also to alleviate the climate change in a micro-level. In this paper we report on our on-going research project how we are developing a smart home prototype. Here we focus on the essential part of a smart home, i.e. HEMS (Home Energy Management System), by investigating how we develop HEMS using an agent framework. A model of agents for constructing HEMS based on both object-oriented and logic programming approaches is proposed. The agent model is implemented in Python. We also argue for the benefit of combining both approaches into a unified agent framework.

    Using energy efficiently will help alleviate the climate change, one major purpose of developing a smart home is to achieve that under the operation of the Home Energy Management System (HEMS). What we propose in this paper is an agent-based framework for HEMS using an object-oriented approach. The framework is implemented in Python. Our agent framework is a generic one applicable for constructing all types of agents in a smart home as well as the HEMS itself. It supports communication between agents and reasoning about states, events, and actions.

    An Intelligent Meter with Smart Home Ability for Intelligent Energy Management

    Intelligent energy management is essential for alleviating global warming. For this purpose, we have developed a novel type of smart meter, the so-called “Intelligent Meter”, which combines both a smart meter and a smart home system into one single device. This intelligent meter is arguably more capable of energy management and more intelligent than a conventional smart meter. We first explain how this intelligent meter can be developed using an intelligent agent approach, and with this approach it allows the meter to be able to reason about states, actions, as well as causes and effects in real time; then we reveal how this meter adopts this agent ability to create load profiles for home energy usage and also perform other intelligent energy management for home resident. Interestingly, this intelligent meter is just an instance of a generic agent system, that is, an intelligent SCADA. This research therefore illustrates how our intelligent SCADA can be applied for intelligent energy management in the context of an intelligent meter.
