    A study on binderless co-pelletization of industrial rice-powder wastes and teak sawdust at low and elevated temperatures

    The objectives of this work were to investigate the effect of rice-powder wastes on binding characteristics of pellet at low temperature (25 °C) and to investigate effect of the elevated temperature of die (80 and 140 °C) on the quality of co-pelletized fuel. Mixing ratios of raw materials, i.e. teak sawdust and rice-powder wastes, were tested at 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3. The results showed that the mixing ratio of 1:1 was optimal at low temperature for binding considered from a trade-off between the increase in friction versus the increase in density and strength. The qualities of pelletized fuel were improved by the elevated temperatures, especially at 140 °C, resulted in the increase in density, compressive strength and energy density, and the decrease in adhesive friction and moisture content. While the color change of pellet was highly depended on die temperature (10 at 80 °C and over 15 at 140 °C), the color change of pellet was not dominated by type of rice-powder wastes.

    Study of air distribution in tray dryer using computational fluid dynamics

    The objective of this work is to investigate the air flow distribution in conventional tray dryer and modified dryer using computational fluid dynamics. Simplified model of drying chamber with assumptions was used for simulation. Grid independence study and model validation were performed with the model of conventional tray dryer. Relative error of models was acceptable for all simulations. The shape of front and rear walls of drying chamber was varied. The results showed that the reason of poor air distribution inside conventional tray dryer was improper installation of air baffle resulting in air flow obstruction. Flow pattern inside the modified drying chamber highly depends on the front wall, while effect of rear wall on flow was insignificant. The critical zones occur at the top of drying chamber for both conventional and modified tray dryers.

    Influence of Germinated Brown Rice Production by Water Spraying Method on Its Qualities

    This study was aimed to compare the production time (germination and drying process) and quality of germinated brown rice (GBR) obtained from the water spraying-based GBR production (Sprayed-GBR) system and the water soaking-based GBR production (Soaked-GBR) system. The results showed that the Sprayed-GBR, in the germination process, required 2.5 h for spraying in a water spraying step to obtain paddy with the moisture content of 30% (w.b.) and 26 h in an incubation step to obtain the 90% germination percentage. This led to a shorter germination time compared to the Soaked-GBR, which required a germination time of 50 h for a 90% germination percentage. After germination, the moisture content of the Sprayed-GBR was lower than that of the Soaked-GBR. This provided a shorter drying time in the Sprayed-GBR (27 min) drying process compared with the Soaked-GBR (33 min). For GBR qualities, the Sprayed-GBR could decrease the unpleasant odor problem by providing a smaller number of attached microorganisms after germination (Shade drying), leading to a significantly higher score in the odor and the overall acceptability than the Soaked-GBR. This indicated that the Sprayed-GBR got more consumer acceptance. Moreover, the head rice yield value of the Sprayed-GBR was not different from that of the Soaked-GBR. However, the Sprayed-GBR provided a significantly lower GABA content and a significantly higher percentage of fissured kernels than the Soaked-GBR.

    Prototype of portable robusta coffee harvesting machine

    The limitations of machine size and cost are main problems for coffee harvesting using machine picking. Therefore, the prototype of Robusta coffee harvesting machine with portable and low cost was designed and created in this research. Moreover, the effects of bristle hardness, bristle size and brush rotation speed on the coffee harvesting efficiency were investigated. The experimental results showed that the prototype of portable Robusta coffee harvesting machine was effective to harvest the Robusta coffee. It provided the highest coffee harvesting efficiency of 75.24% by using the bristle hardness of 75 shore A, bristle size of 8 mm and brush rotation speed of 700 rpm. The bristle hardness, bristle size and brush rotation speed were significantly affected the coffee harvesting efficiency. The coffee harvesting efficiency was increased when increasing the bristle hardness from 60 shore A to 75 shore A and the brush rotation speed from 600 rpm to 700 rpm. On the other hand, the increase of bristle size from 8 mm to 10 mm provided the lower coffee harvesting efficiency.

    Effect of heat pipe characteristics in the energy recovery ventilation system for positive pressure room

    A system's high energy consumption is a drawback when it is used to create a positive pressure environment to reduce PM2.5. Air to air energy recovery ventilation systems (ERVs) using heat pipes are a feasible technology. This study aims to investigate the effect of installation patterns of heat pipes in air-to-air heat exchangers and the operating conditions of the system for generating a positive pressure environment. Flow characteristics of inline and staggered heat pipes with fins and without fins were investigated by using computational fluid dynamics. The different operating conditions varying inlet air temperature, air flow rate and heat pipe surface temperature were also studied. The results showed that the staggered heat pipes with fins introduced promising results. Outlet temperature was dominated by inlet air temperature and heat pipe surface temperature, while the pressure drop crossed ERV were relied on air flow rate. The promising results from the simulation were a guideline for constructing a practical heat exchanger that was integrated with positive pressure-generating equipment.

    The improvement of germination method for producing the germinated brown rice using a water spraying system with a revolved sieve

    Water soaking is an important method in germinated brown rice (GBR) production that causes fermentation, leading to an unpleasant smell of GBR. In this research, a water spraying system with a revolved sieve is applied to produce the GBR. The increased speed and time of spray break led to higher moisture content and water absorption. The spray break of 30 min and revolved speed of 15 rpm provided the shortest time to obtain the paddy with a moisture content of 30% (w.b.). The incubation pattern with a revolved sieve and water spray provided the shortest incubation time for 90% germination. When producing the GBR with a water spraying system with a revolved sieve (GBR-WSSRS), it had a lower number of microorganisms compared to the GBR with a water soaking (GBR-WS), leading to higher scores of overall acceptability. However, the GBR-WSSRS had a lower GABA content than the GBR-WS.
