Expressions of Local Identity via Architectural Practice in UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Via its investigations on three types of buildings, consisting of residential, religious, and educational structures, this research: (1) provides guidelines for the creation of local identity via architecture erected in the areas adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage sites; and (2) examines the mechanism in creating such an identity. As exhibited by the upcoming discussions, the economic, social, cultural and technological conditions are central not only for practical requirements and structural integrity of those buildings, but also for expressions of the local identity. In addition to maintaining a delicate balance between aesthetics, architectural realization, and local wisdom, the creations of the case studies engage all involving parties in the following five domains as well, which are: (1) generation of public consciousness; (2) design participation; (3) establishment of Heritage Academic Research Community; (4) recognitions for the values of the Thai identity; and (5), creative integration of stakeholders with community networks.

Cultivations of cross-cultural experiences via a collaborative and cooperative approach for sustainable learning from communities in Si Satchanalai, Thailand
In 2018, a group of faculty members and students from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang (KMITL), and Royal College of Art (RCA) organized workshops and field trips to Sukhothai province in Thailand to explore the livelihood along with cultural heritages, social practices, and sustainable learning by the inhabitants of communities in Si Satchanalai district. Conceptually informed by Spencer Kagan’s notion of Cooperative and Collaborative (C&C) sustainable learning approach employed by the KMITL-RCA collaborations, this research examined the 2018 workshops and excursions for their roles in 1) advancing tacit knowledge on the artistic and architectural heritages of Si Satchanalai; and 2) bridging a horizon of understanding between Thai and foreign students. In order to assess the pedagogical efficacy of the C&C approach, the upcoming evaluative discussions encompassed a series of dependent sample t-tests, utilizing several questionnaires, surveys, and personal conversations for collecting data to construct a content model in terms of comparative studies between the KMITL and RCA participants. Not only did the statistical inquiries: 1) validate the methodological applicability of the C&C edifying model but also 2) demonstrate its merits in promoting cross-cultural learning in architectural and design discipline.

Baan Fai Rim Ping: a haptic approach to the phenomenon of genius loci by a riverside residence in Thailand
Standing on the west bank of the Ping river in northern Thailand, Baan Fai Rim Ping displayed a fluid profile of multiple perspective points. Such an eccentric appearance, however, belied the senses of place and historical continuity, along with the feeling of belonging provided by this waterfront residence. Apart from occupying a prime estate near a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kamphaeng Phet province, apposite utilisations of materials, coupled with sensational spatial organisation and formal composition, were the major contributing factors to the said characteristics. Informed by a conceptual framework of genius loci, this research presented multidimensional inquiries on the haptic design of Baan Fai Rim Ping for generating a phenomenon of place through the sensory receptions of its dwellers. Containing three thematic foci, the studies firstly examined the contextual background leading to the creation of the building. Second, the investigations concentrated on how the design parameters and elements of the house were developed and implemented. Third, the aforementioned modes of problematisation lent a basis to argue that the quality of placeness was not confined exclusively to traditional or vernacular structures, but could be found in the unorthodox aesthetics of Baan Fai Rim Ping as well.
