    Assessing the Effectiveness of Smartphone Usage to Interact with Learning Materials in Independent Learning Outside of Classrooms among Undergraduate Students

    Clearly, the smartphone is increasingly playing a greater role in everyday life, thus providing opportunities to evaluate how well the use of the smartphone meets the requirements of undergraduate students in independent learning outside of a classroom setting. This study used the task-technology fit (TTF) model to explore the effectiveness of smartphone usage to interact with learning materials in independent learning outside of classrooms, the need for smartphone support, and the fit of devices to tasks as well as performance. First, the study used interviews, observation, and survey data to identify what are the most important constructs of smartphones that stimulate students to interact with learning materials in independent learning outside of classrooms. Based on the findings from the exploratory study and Task Technology Fit theory, we postulated the Navigation design, Ergonomic design, Content support, and Capacity as the essential dimension of the smartphone construct. Then, we proposed a research model and empirically tested hypotheses with the structural model analysis. The results reveal a significant positive impact of task and technology on TTF for smartphone usage to interact with learning materials in independent learning outside of classrooms; it also confirmed the TTF and performance have a direct effect on actual use.

    Analysis of factors influencing the mobile technology acceptance for library information services: Conceptual model

    Increasing powerful mobile technology, for example tablet devices, empower learners to seek information not only at home but also in mobile learning scenarios, virtually anywhere and anytime. However, the variety of library material types such as e-books, e-journals, images, audio and movies, require different levels of human-computer interaction. Moreover, the different library material types may be subject to different usability constraints. Thus, it is important for the academic library to look at how student use their mobile technology for library information services. This paper aims to propose a theoretical model for academic institutes and telecommunication service providers by addressing the following question: What are the key determinant factors for the mobile technology acceptance in using library information services? How the patron' s perspective and technical perspective are integrated in the process of mobile technology acceptance for library information services? We extend the extending Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model (UTAUT2) to the context of library information services by examining the moderating role of library material type. Adapting the UTAUT2 model requires respecification to suit a specific information system as well as including integration variables namely technology characteristics, task characteristics and attitude. The contribution of the model is a design guideline for the mobile technology function that is consistent with the library information services.     A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FOREARM AND HAND MUSCLE USAGE DURING HANDWRITING PRACTICE USING HANDWRITING TOOL

    The foundation of education is learning how to write and is considered an essential skill. The early years of education are dedicated to learning how to hold a pencil and how to form letters and words. This research aims to investigate whether there are differences in muscle activity usage between various digital handwriting tools and a standard pencil. We compare the electromyogram of five muscles: upper trapezius (TRAP), biceps brachii (BB), extensor digitorum communis (EDC), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), and first dorsal interosseous (FDI) during elementary school’s practice of forming letters and words. Five types of (digital) handwriting devices were used. The results showed that using Chromebooks, indicating a trend of increasing in TRAP and BB muscle activities. However, using Chromebook, indicating a trend of reducing in FDI muscle activity. Moreover, when practicing forming letters and words with iPad Pro and Livescribe pens, subjects had the lowest TRAP and BB muscle activity. When using a pencil, it indicated a trend of increasing EDC, FDS and FDI muscle activities. The findings also suggest that a Boogie Board Sync, without line space on the black screen of slate, may create difficulty in controlling their strokes on the surface properly, strokes beautification and their aesthetics, and these may ultimately affect muscle activity. Thus, this study indicated a potential lower energy consumption and lower health risks with the digital handwriting technology. Therefore, for preventing long-term negative effects on fine motor skills development digital handwriting tools may be a suitable interface solution for learning environments

    Analysis of Factor Influencing the Tablet Acceptance for Library Information Services: A Combination of UTAUT and TTF Model

    Increasingly, powerful mobile technology, like the tablet, empowers learners to seek information in mobile learning scenarios virtually anywhere and anytime. It is important for the academic library to look at how students use their tablets for library information seeking tasks to fully understand the nature of the patron's task and the need for the tablet. This study investigates the function of mobile technology based on the information seeking task, with particular reference to the appropriateness of tablet characteristics for the information seeking task in a library online database, downloading and reading from the screen, the effect of the patron's perception on their behavioural intention (BI) to use the tablet, and a measure of the patron's acceptance. Adapting the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model requires re-specification to suit a specific information system. The re-specific model introduces new constructs and new measuring instruments. New constructs were used for exogenous predictors of the UTAUT variables as well as including integration variables namely technology characteristics and task characteristics that were explicitly contained in the task-technology fit (TTF) model. These extensions and integrations of UTAUT have been valuable in expanding our understanding of technology adoption and extending the boundaries of the theory. Our research found that TTF and performance expectancy (PE) have a direct effect on actual use (AU). In addition, we also found a significant effect of the TTF on PE which in turn influences BI to accept the tablet for library information seeking tasks. This shows the importance of TTF. Besides, the results showed that interaction with library search systems revealed the strongest effect among the exogenous variables, which ultimately determines the AU of the tablet for library information seeking tasks.
