    This paper reports the radiation characteristics of a low cost and simple structure bidirectional antenna by using a linear probe in a rectangular ring. The radiation pattern is obtained from the Fourier transformation of the aperture field which is derived from the field inside the ring by using Green's function. From the numerical result of the radiated field, for a specific ring dimension, the optimum length which provides the maximum directivity are calculated and chosen as a design parameter. Experimental results, verifying the bidirectional radiation, agree very well with the computational result.

    Investigations of Radiation Characteristics of a circularly polarized conical beam spherical slot array antenna
    (1999-01-01) ; ;
    Takada, Jun Ichi
    This paper presents the radiation characteristics of a circularly polarized conical beam spherical slot array antenna for applying to the mobile satellite communication subscriber. The structure of the antenna is easy to fabricate i.e., a ring of perpendicular slot pairs cut on an outer surface of a concentric conducting spherical cavity enclosed by the conducting conical surface with the simple feeding structure, and a linear electric probe excited at the center of the inner surface of the cavity. Radiation fields of a spherical slot array antenna are calculated by superposing the patterns of all the slots. From the numerical results of the radiation pattern, in both elcvational and azimuthal planes, it is obvious that the conical beam is realized. The elevational beam direction is low, which is suitable for installing in the land mobile subscriber unit located far from the equator. The tracking system is not necessary because the azimuthal pattern is omnidirectional. Directivity of the antenna for various spherical radii and angles of slot positions are illustrated as the guidelines for the design. Experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions.

    This paper analyzes temperature distribution of a steerable active slot array applicator in terms of slot separation and injecting signal to find the appropriate condition that provides a wide effective area. This result is useful in the design of an applicator for a large area application such as chest wall.

    This paper proposes a circularly polarized conical beam spherical slot array antenna which is suitable for a low elevation angle land mobile satellite communication subscriber. The structure of this antenna type is very simple to fabricate; i.e. a ring of perpendicular slot pairs is cut on an outer surface of a concentric conducting spherical cavity. From the assumption of weak coupling of the slots from the cavity, the conical beam pattern can be obtained. Experimental results that verify the conical beam radiation are in good agreement with the design. © 1999 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

    This paper investigates the principle of a steerable spherical slot array antcnna. By combining the advantages of a spherical array in which the beam shape can be kept constant as it is steered in any direction, a simple beam steering mechanism of an active array antenna and a simple array element, a cost effective steerable antenna can be achieved. This antenna is useful in a mobile communication system.

    A Spherical Slot Array Applicator for Medical Applications

    A new type of microwave hyperthermia applicator is proposed and analyzed. A cavity, consists of concentric conducting partial spheres which are enclosed by a part of a conducting cone, is employed to excite an array of slots coherently. From numerical results that we obtained, it is possible to focus the electric field radiated from the slots to the center of the sphere where a tumor is assumed to be located. Furthermore, SAR distributions of some applicators are obtained by using computer, and these applicators have been designed. From the measured results of electric field distributions at 2450 MHz, it is found that the focusing characteristics are achievable. Thermographic studies show that the heating volume can be varied by using different number of slots and the maximum heating depth is 3 cm. © 1995 IEEE

    This paper presents the dyadic Green's function of the concentric conducting spherical cavity enclosed by a conducting conical surface which is derived by using the eigenfunction expansion method. The results consist of magnetic and electric type dyadic Green's functions in series form.

    This paper describes a microvave applicator which is an array of two slots. Utilizing a newly design cavity to excite the slots , it can focus electric field deep into the heating medium and prevent radiation leakage. Experimental results performed at 2450 MHz confirm the focusing capability.
