Improving the catalytic activity of CaO derived from oyster shell waste for transesterification of palm oil with methanol

Abstract
Transesterification of palm oil with methanol was studied using the CaO derived from the shell waste (CaOshell) and a commercial grade CaO (CaO-com). The effects of temperature, atmospheric gas and gas concentration in the treatment process on the catalytic activity of the obtained CaO were examined. Although the activity of the CaO-shell was much lower than the CaO-com when the treated gas was air, the activity of the CaO-shell was significantly improved with suitable treating condition. The activity of the CaO-shell was improved to the same level with the one of the CaO-com when the CaO-shell was treated with N 2. The activity of the CaO-shell was further improved when 50% of water was added into the treating gases. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 19th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering and 7th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (Prague, Czech Republic 8/28/2010-9/1/2010).
