Abstract
This paper presents a new approach to the magnetic design of the rotor shape tor a two-phase switched reluctance machine (SRM). The magnetically linear machine design is established by using "flux tube analysis." Flux tube analysis has been used to calculate the appropriate size and shape of the rotor poles, so the new design is guaranteed to self-start in a known direction and provide smoother torque production. The linear model provides a quick solution for the designer before the nonlinear properties of the core are added and verified using finite element analysis (FEA). A curve fitting method is used to model the magnetic characteristics of the machine, A sample design is carried out using the approach and a comparison is made with a three-phase SRM that has the same output.
