Abstract

Since the beach in the front of a coastal dike or seawall is a useful wave absorber as well as a crucial part of a tourist resort, it is important to maintain a desired beach plane form and profile. In this study we use field data to examine the accuracy of several formulas commonly used to predict the vertical profile of a beach. Second, we similarly check the accuracy of a numerical scour prediction model by Ca et al. (2002). On the design of a beach profile, Sunamura's (1984), Yamamoto's et al., and Dean's formula show good agreement with data. Field verification simulations clarify that wave scouring amount can be accurately predicted using the numerical model of Ca et al.
