Abstract
Geotechnical experiences gained from the construction of the first underground MRT line of Bangkok is presented. The 22 km long twin bored tunnels and 18 cut-and-cover stations were successfully completed on schedule without a single incident of major impact to existing structures. The running tunnels were excavated by eight EPB shield machines and the stations were excavated using concrete diaphragm walls with the top-down construction method. The operation and performance of the EPB shields and the design and construction of the stations are outlined. Design and construction procedures to minimize the impact of ground movement on existing structures was the key success of the project. It involved prediction of ground movements and assessment of the impact during the design phase and instrumentation and monitoring during the construction phase. The on-going land subsidence induced by deep well pumping of the city was another factor complicated the design.
