THE EVALUATION OF BIOACTIVITIES OF BAUHINIA PURPUREA EXTRACTS

Abstract
Bioactivity studies were conducted on extracts of Bauhinia purpurea obtained from its leaf, seed, and bark, focusing on their inhibition of growth in five bacterial species: Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Micrococcus luteus TISTR 9341, Salmonella typhimurium TISTR 0562, Clostridium sporogenes TISTR 549, and Streptococcus thermophilus TISTR 894. Initial testing at a concentration of 50 mg/ml revealed that all extracts inhibited all five bacterial strains, especially leaf and bark extract against M. luteus and S. typhimurium. While at higher concentration of 100 mg/ml, leaf and bark extract gave the best result against M. luteus. And seed extract inhibited C. sporogenes and S. typhimurium. Further analysis showed that the total phenolic content varied among the extracts, with leaf, bark, and seed extracts containing 35.5, 211.7, and 35.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) per gram of extract, respectively. Assessment of free radical scavenging activity using the DPPH assay indicated the highest antioxidant activity in seed extract with the lowest IC50 value. Cytotoxicity studies against human lung cancer cell lines using the MTT assay demonstrated that the seed extract exhibited the highest cytotoxicity, with a CC50 value of 4.00 µg/ml. The results of antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity indicated that higher extract concentrations correlated with increased bioactivity. Based on these findings, the seed extract of Bauhinia purpurea emerged as the most promising candidate for further investigation due to its significant bioactivity profile, suggesting potential applications in medicinal contexts.
