Item type:Publication, Metastatic Cancers to the Oral Cavity: A 42-Year Experience(2026-05-27); ;Dhanuthai, KittipongPhattarataratip, EkaratPURPOSE: Metastatic cancers to the oral cavity are rare and often indicate a widespread metastatic disease with an unfavorable prognosis. This study aimed to determine their frequency, demographics, and clinical profiles in Thailand. METHODS: Pathology records were reviewed from 1983 to 2024 for cases diagnosed with metastatic cancers involving the oral cavity. Demographic, clinical, and radiographic data were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Of 4057 oral malignancies, 71 (1.8%) were metastatic cancers. Males accounted for 56.3%, while females accounted for 43.7%. The mean age at diagnosis was 61.1 ± 9.9 years. Nodular swelling (59.2%) was the most common clinical presentation, and 77.5% of patients reported pain. Jawbone metastases were 1.5-fold more common than oral mucosal metastases. Most lesions involved the posterior mandible (28.2%) and showed radiolucency radiographically (77.0%). Gingiva (22.5%) was the most common oral mucosal metastatic site. In 12.7% of cases, the primary lesions were not diagnosed at the time of oral presentation. The most common oral metastatic cancers in males were colorectal cancer, followed by lung cancer. In females, breast cancer was the most frequent primary site, followed by thyroid cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The variable distribution of oral metastases across populations suggests geographic and sex-related disparities in the prevalence of the primary malignancies. Their clinical presentations can vary significantly, posing a diagnostic challenge. This study provides a valuable database for clinicians to consider oral metastases in the differential diagnosis of lesions with painful swelling of oral mucosal tissues or jawbones, particularly in older individuals with a history of cancer. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma with Calcification After Previous Excision of a Lesion Diagnosed as Pyogenic Granuloma: A Case Report and Clinicopathologic Consideration(2026-01-01)Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (PODF) is a relatively rare, benign extraosseous odontogenic tumor derived from odontogenic ectomesenchyme, characterized by a mature fibrous stroma containing inactive islands of odontogenic epithelium. This case report describes a 52-year-old female who presented with a recurrent labial gingival mass involving the upper left lateral incisor–canine region. The lesion had been excised one year earlier, with a pathological diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma. The recurrent lesion was subsequently excised under local anesthesia, along with scaling and root planing of the affected area. Histopathological examination revealed PODF (with calcification). Awareness of the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and histopathological features of such lesions is crucial for achieving an accurate diagnosis. Given the shared potential for mineralized tissue formation in PODF and peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), diagnostic confusion may occur. Item type:Publication, The Incidence of Cysts and Tumors Related to Impacted Mandibular Third Molars in the Thai Population(2025-08-01)Objective: To determine the frequency and types of cysts and tumors around the impacted mandibular third molars (IMTMs) in the Thai population. Methods: This study was a retrospective study of the histopathologic results of the lesions associated with IMTMs from January 2022 to December 2023. In addition, the age and sex of the patients, panoramic radiographs were also reviewed. The IMTMs with other impacted teeth and patient who had incomplete data record or poor quality panoramic films were excluded. Results: In a period of two years, the 2,355 IMTMs were removed. Among these, the incidence of cysts and tumors around IMTMs was 1.86% (44 lesions of 42 patients). The mean age was 36.07 years with male predominance. Most cases (72.73%) demonstrated unilocular radiolucency in the radiographs. The incidence of cysts around IMTMs was 1.57% with dentigerous cysts in majority. Bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with IMTMs were found in 2 patients with no underlying syndromes or systemic diseases. While the incidence of benign tumors around IMTMs was 0.29% with ameloblastoma in majority, malignancy was not found. Conclusion: Although the results indicated that cysts and tumors can develop in relatively small chances in a minority of patients, it was a crucial pathologic condition that cannot be underestimated due to complications after surgery. The decision to remove IMTMs requires careful thought and evaluation for individual patients.
