Abstract
Shophouses in the Southern peninsula of Thailand were influenced by western culture. For more than 20 years most researches call the style of shophouses, ‘Sino-Portuguese’. However, the origin of the name is not known. To address this gap, the study will find the coherence of the definition of Shophouses in the region. The research methodologies are a synthesis of secondary data from research and fieldwork in the study areas, particularly in the Southern peninsula of Thailand, including Penang and Malacca of Malaysia and Singapore. Firstly, this paper proposes the coherence in the architectural characteristics of shophouses in the Malayan peninsula. Secondly, it proposes the definition of shophouses, whereas the significance of the keyword ‘Sino-Portuguese’ in the identity of shophouses or other identity. How to describe the combination of art and architecture of China and the West? And how to explore the definition of the style of shophouses by relating significance with identity?.
