Abstract
This paper presents the RF identification (RFID) reader antenna design for the frequency band of 2.4-2.5 GHz corresponding to the standard of universal SHF RFID. A suspended fractal antenna is introduced in this work. The antenna structure consists of two layers. The bottom plate is suspended above a ground plane. The antenna has a single feed by a tapered down feeding strip. The top layer consists of four identical fractal radiating plates and each plate is connected to the bottom plate by a vertical strip. A fractal technique is presented to reduce the antenna size. The total size of reader antenna is 130 mm × 110 mm fabricated by a copper with the thickness 6 mm. The measured results are shown that the proposed antenna achieves the of -10 dB, the gain at boresight direction is 10.33 dBi, considering at 2.45 GHz, VSWR < 2 of 2.365-2.530 GHz or 6.74 %, with unidirectional pattern. Therefore, the proposed antenna is useful for universal SHF RFID applications worldwide at the SHF band of 2.40-2.5 GHz.
